June 7, 1957 THE WISCONSIN JEWISH CHRONICLE of the Air, NBC-TV Opera and has had engagements at Carnegie United Hebrew School Will Graduate Twenty Students at Exercises, June 9 Artists in Coming Opera "Carmen" Have Starred in Foreign Productions Graduation exercises for six high school and 14 elementary school pupils of the United Hebrew Schools will be held at the Beth Am Center on Sunday afternoon, June 9 at 2:30 p.m., according to Herman Weingrod, chairman of the School Board. The exercises will feature a cantata on Volunteer workers aiding the "Luncheon at the Opera" program, featuring the operalogue. "Carmen" in behalf of the Israel bond campaign, will meet at 1 p.m. Monday at the office of the Milwaukee Committee for State of Israel Bonds, 259 E. Wells Golden Book certificates and a scroll signifying student participation in Cnild Rescue work.

Following the ceremonies, a reception honoring the graduate will be held. Chairman of the committee on reception arrangements is Mrs. David Shapiro. The United Hebrew Schools is Hall. Mr.

Bartell is known to Milwaukee opera-goers for his leading roles with the Florentine Opera company. He has appeared in London performances of the Coven Gardens Opera made guest appearances in Dublin, and toured throughout Europe. A former actor, Mr. Bartell played in "Street Scene" during its Broadway run. "Carmen" as presented by this talented group, may be seen by women who either purchase an Israel bond, or sell three bonds, as a guest of the women's division of the Milwaukee Bond Baker Post, Auxiliary Schedule Installation Newton D.

Baker No. 241 Post and Auxiliary of the American Legion, will have installation of officers on Tuesday, June 11, at 8 p.m. at the Beth Am Center. Everyone is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

The. following are to be installed: The Post: David Ross, commander; Lou Holzman, first vice commander; Abe Scherr, second vice commander; Meyer Bilansky, adjutant; Jack Cohen, finance officer; Max Feldman, chaplain; Dr. I-ewis Cohen, historian; Sam Ler-ner and Ben Safer, sergeant-at-arms. The Auxiliary: Betty Cohen, president; Caroline Bliwas, vice president; Rose Scherr, recording secretary; Fanny Goldin, treasurer; Thelma Sinagub, corresponding ecretary and chaplain; Rose Bernstein and Edythe De Jong, Jack Wener to Guide BBYO Tour to Israel Jack Weiner, formerly of Milwaukee and currently residing in New Orleans as District Seven BBYO Director, will spend the summer in Israel as the staff guide for the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization Israel Summer Institute. He will lead 16 teen age boys and girls from throughout the country on a tour to Israel.

The tour group will meet with Israeli officials, visit numerous places of interest, and spend several days working in a kibbutz. Mr. Weiner was selected by Dr. Max F. Baer, National Director of BBYO, to serve in this capacity.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Morrie Weiner, N. 52nd st. The tour will leave New York July 7 and remain in Israel until August 26.

While Mr. Weiner is abroad, Mrs. Shirley Weiner, daughter of Mrs. Tillie Weicher, N. 50th will spend the summer in Milwaukee with their two sons, Michael and Scott.

Prior to going abroad, Mr. Weiner will spend a few days in Milwaukee visiting with relatives and friends. and then call on members of the cast for highlight scenes and vocal selections. Miss Sachs, under contract to Metropolitan Opera is considered among the rising young American singers. She appeared with the Chicago Opera Company in "Madame Butterfly" in 1946, the same year she left the Julliard School of Music.

She has op-peared in 25 operatic roles, in four languages. She has fulfilled engagements in such widely separated areas as Central America, and Canada. Miss Judd has sung with NBC Television Opera, and has performed many times in concert and oratorio. Williams has appeared in concerts throughout the United States and with the Chautauqua Opera Association, the Symphony TEL AVIV (JTA) All bus fares in Israel are going up by 8 per cent to cover higher prices of fuel, lubricants and spare parts. This will be the second increase in a year, the previous hike having been 10 per cent.

Meyer Bass Participates in Convention Activities Meyer Bass, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Center, was elected last week to the Executive Committee of the National Association of Jewish Center Workers at its annual convention in Atlantic City. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the National Conference of Jewish Communal Service which met prior to the NAJCW. Mr.

Bass presented a paper on "Trends in Personnel Administration" before the section meeting of executives of large centers. Other JCC staff members attending the Atlantic City meetings of Jewish social workers were Larry Lederman, Athletic Director; Ephraim Goldstein, Program Director; Irving Levine, Youth Activities Director; Norman Adel-man, Childrens' Activities Director; and Saul Berkoff, Physical Education Supervisor. The co-chairmen invite all women who desire to serve to attend the meeting which will arrange final plans for the operalogue, to be held at 12:30 Thursday, June 20, at the Milwaukee Jewish Community Center. The artists who will appear in "Carmen" include four stars who have appeared in a number of productions throughout the United States and foreign countries, and on radio and television, among them a widely-known Milwaukee-an, Melvin Bartell, as a resident artist. Evelyn Sachs will play the role of "Carmen." Others in the cast include Mary Judd and Brent Williams. The closing ceremonies for the Sunday School division of the United Hebrew Schools will also be held on Sunday June 9 at 11 a.m. Forty second graders who are ready for the elementary division will receive certificates and be welcomed to the daily school by Laurie Melrood, a third year student. Mr. Philip Itzkowitz, past president of the PTA, will present gifts to the second graders, and Mrs.

The six high school graduates who will receive diplomas certifying the completion of nine years of Hebrew studies include Abraham Bass, Jonathan Golan, Dina Shapiro, Burt Siegel, Jerry Tepper, and David Wax. Burt Siegel To Attend Yeshiva A valedictory address to the elementary students will be given by Burt Siegel, who plans to begin studies for the rabbinate at Yeshiva University in New York next September. The elementary school graduates who will receive diplomas certifying the completion of five years of study include Sheldon Bankier, Norman Cohen, Barry Ellman, Fred Geller, John Gil-man, Dalia Golan, Howard Loeb, Roslynn Pais, Jack Porter, Allan Saxe, Varda Schwartzman, Chan-ita Stillerman, Alan Teplinsky, and Lanny Weingrod.

Roslynn Pais will present a gift to the school on 'behalf of her classmates. Mrs. Max Silverstein, president of the PTA, will present each graduate with a book on behalf of her group, and Miss Goldie Sosoff will present the school with two Green Bay Marks First "Hebrew" Graduation The Jewish community of Green Bay proudly marks an historic first this week. The Cnesses Israel Hebrew School which conducts Hebrew classes under the leadership of its Rabbi, Nathan H. Reisner, will graduate its first group of students to complete the six-year elementary course.

Pupils attend these sessions three times weekly. The graduating class will include Elizabeth Alk, Sherl Fogel, Marcia Levine, and Mark Redress. Mrs. Morris Gor-witz assists the Rabbi on the teaching level. Participants in the graduation exercises will include: Gabriel Medress, chairman of the Board of Directors, Murray L.

Feinstein, chairman of the School Board, Rabbi Reisner and Dr. William B. Furie, Executive Director of the Milwaukee Bureau of Jewish Education, who will deliver the commencement address. Dr. Furie has recently spent several days in Superior, conducting the exhaustive research required by this monumental undertaking. Preliminary results will shortly be forthcoming.
