Millburn posted its first victory in recent memory over St. Benedict's Prep 16-11 on Feb. 26 and defeated Columbia 17-10 on Feb.

28 to finish 12-0. Abeyawardee recorded the match-clinching point in both matches. Somers and Sherrill finished 1-2 in the sophomore epee division at the recent state freshmansophomore tournament. Korb placed ninth in the sophomore foil division. Stan Liu took third place in freshman epee.

Justin Gerrard finished 14th in freshman foil. bia (25-8). Pingry (22-11) finished in fourth place followed by Wayne Hills and Voorhees (16-17), Bernards (14-19), Morristown (13-20), North Hunterdon (12-21), West Milford (11-22), Pompton Lakes (9-24) and Fair Lawn (5-28). MILLER NOTES Millburn had gotten the better of Ramapo on two previous occasions this winter, posting an 11 -bout margin of victory in the Cetrulo Tournament on Jan. 19 and a 14-13 triumph two days earlier in a regular season contest.

District 2 foil champion Abeyawardene, District 2 epee champion Sherrill, Brosterman, Duane and Somers were scheduled to compete in the state individual championships Tuesday night at Morristown High School. Fernandes (63rd in cadet men's sabre), Somers (88th in junior men's Miller senior Kevin Shi, who has been hampered by an injury to his right wrist, picked up three wins on the epee A strip. Voorhees finished fourth in epee at 19-11 followed by West Essex (16-14), North Hunterdon (15-15), Pompton Lakes (14-16), Columbia and Morristown (10-20), Montclair Kimberley Academy (8-22) and Bernards (6-24). Millburn also posted a 23-7 record in foil, good for a share of first place with North Hunterdon. A 62-57 edge in touches gave North Hunterdon's contingent of Ralph Manino (9-1), Darren Manchen (8-2) and Ben Dorfman (6-4) the team crown.

Senior Niluka Abeyawardene (9-1), junior Michael Duane (8-2) and sophomore Greg Korb (6-4) comprised Millburn's foil team. Ramapo placed third in foil with a 20-10 record followed by Morristown (19-11), Hackettstown (17-13), Somerville and Columbia (16-14), West Essex (12-18), Bishop Francis Essex Catholic (9-21), Wayne Hills (6-24) and Indian Hills (3-27). Seniors Jon Brosterman (9-1), Tsai-Hsuan Tsai (8-2) and Ethan Ho (0-3) and sophomore Aaron Fernan-des (6-1) competed for Millburn in sabre. Recreation department youth basketball roundup By Jim Connelly of The Item A strong showing by the sabre team propelled Millburn High School to a third-place finish in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association girls' fencing team championships Saturday at Voorhees High School in Glen Gardner. Senior Joanna Szklarska (9-2) on A strip, junior Lauren Riesebeck (8-3) on strip and juniors Pamela Silver (5-4) and Simona Fernandes (1-1) sparked the Millers to a second-place showing in sabre with a 23-10 record. Pingry claimed team saber honors with a 29-4 record. Millburn's epee team of senior Jessica Huston, junior Rachel Eschenbach and sophomores Hannah Weinstein and Hana Podhoretz finished in a tie for sixth place with Hackettstown and Teaneck at 16-17. Oak Knoll, which claimed the overall team title, took first place in the epee competition at 26-7.

The Millers' foil squad endured a rough day, winning just six of 33 bouts to finish last the 12-team field. Representing Millburn were juniors Mary Lynn Colavita and Jordana points and Melissa Memmolo and Gaby Snyder each scored six on Saturday, propelling the top-seeded Spartans to a 23-5 second-round defeat of the Terrapins. Jennifer Memmolo and Shira Sacks starred on defense for the Spartans. Kylie Cohen scored 10 points and Anna Humphries dropped in six on Saturday, lifting the seventh-seeded Explorers to a 26-12 second-round defeat of the lOth-seeded Hawkeyes. Meghan Hayes paced the Hawkeyes with eight points.

Laura SanFillipo scored 10 points and Arielle Wisotsky chipped in with eight points, pacing the 11th-seeded seeded Tar Heels to a 22-17 second-round defeat of the sixth-seeded Wolfpack on Saturday. Tory Delahunt and Denine Preziozi played stellar defense for the victors. Cassandra McKaba (12 points) and Margarethe Van Der Tuin (14 rebounds) starred in the third-seeded Buckeyes 34-10 second-round defeat of the 14th-seeded Blue Devils on Saturday. Continued on Page 21 Millburn and Ramapo had alternated taking home the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association boys' fencing team championship since the Millers claimed the team title in 1998. Ramapo put an end to that trend Saturday as it repeated as state champion by a margin of three wins over Millburn at Voorhees High School in Glen Gardner.

Ramapo, despite winning just one of three weapons titles, compiled a 73-20 record. Millburn (70-23) was followed by Columbia (51-22), North Hunterdon (50-43) and Morristown (42-51). The Millers, despite coming up short in their bid for the state crown, turned in solid showings in all three weapons. The epee team, spearheaded by 10-0 performances from sophomores Teddy Sherrill and A.J. Somers, claimed the state team crown for the fifth consecutive year.

Millburn edged Ramapo and Newark Academy by one victory for the team title. The Millers posted a 23-7 record. Ramapo and Newark Academy each amassed 22-8 records, with Ramapo being awarded second place by virtue of more touches, 41-28. the fourth-seeded Sting. Stefanie Breindel and Aliza Roth scored key baskets for the victors.

Anna Feins and Becky Silverman led the Sting's offensive attack. Stefanie Weg (seven points) and Allison Eatroff (five points) propelled the sixth-seeded Sparks to an 18-13 first-round defeat of the 11th-seeded Monarchs Friday night. The Monarchs received six points from Haley Draznin and five from Allison Ryan. Lauren Nadel, Jenna Bloom and Katie Inglese played solid defense in the seventh-seeded Liberty's 12-10 first-round defeat of the lOth-seeded Starzz Friday night. Jackie San Fil-lipo, Lily Moaba and Jordan Ron-beck starred on offense for the victors.

Jamie White scored 1 1 points and Adrienne Durando scored four points and grabbed six rebounds in the fifth-seeded Rockers 30-17 first-round defeat of the 12th-seeded Mystics Friday night. Rachel Eisen-hauer had four steals for the victors. 6th-8th grade girls' league Mallory Gadye's 14 points and strong defensive play by Debbie Feld and Kaitlyn Fiore paced the 16th-seeded Cornhuskers to a 22-16 defeat of the 17th-seeded Hoosiers Friday night in the first-round playoff action. Laura Bariso scored eight points in a losing effort. Lauren Menino's 20 points sparked the 18th-seeded Terrapins to a 47-44 first-round defeat of the 15th-seeded Rams Friday night.

Katie Dilyard dropped in 13 points and Naomi Burstein had 10 for the victors. The Rams' Liz Blake led all scorers with 22 points. Trina Rennie scored a season-high 18 points and Allison Stone scored the clinching basket in the second-seeded Seminoles 29-26 second-round defeat of the Cornhuskers Saturday morning. The Cornhuskers, who held a 14-11 halftime lead, received eight points from Ayla Gordon and six from Rachel Wissner. Michael Per-chick scored 15 points for the Celtics. Hennie Bosman, Michael Layman and Steven Jakub each scored six points, leading the top-seeded Trail Blazers to a 26-23 quarterfinal-round defeat of the Heat Saturday afternoon. Bonomo scored 10 points for the Heat. Ben D'Alessio (nine points) and Adam Talpalar (eight points) paced the fourth-seeded Nets to a 35-20 quarterfinal-round defeat of the Bucks Saturday afternoon. Josh Plump scored 10 points for the Bucks.

Matthew Binder (14 points) and Matthew Filepp (six points) sparked the sixth-seeded Bulls to a 24-19 quarterfinal-round defeat of the third-seeded Lakers Saturday afternoon. The Lakers received six points from Patrick Clare. Jacob Silver scored 13 points and Brian Emposimato dropped in four points Saturday afternoon when the Hornets upset the second-seeded Warriors 28-018 in the final quarterfinal-round contest of the day. Peter Daniels scored four points for the Warriors. 4th -5th grade girls' league Karra Bonomo scored 14 points and Danielle Alonzi dropped in eight points Saturday morning, leading the fifth-seeded Rockers to a 30-15 defeat of the 12th-seeded Mystics in first-round playoff action.

Jenna Farber and Kelly Ann Fitz Maurice each scored four points, pacing the third-seeded Fire to a 15-10 first-round playoff defeat of the 14th-seeded Blizzard Saturday morning. The Blizzard received six points from Kimberly Atkins. Kaitlyn Kleinendorst (10 points) and Shannon Foley (four points) sparked the ninth-seeded Xplosion to an 18-8 first-round defeat of the eighth-seeded Shock Friday night. Kristin Biehl scored 12 points and Samantha Kubek handed out five assists Friday night in the 13th-seed-ed Storm's 19-7 first-round defeat of David Hamilton scored 16 points and Teddy Cantor dropped in four Friday night, leading the eighth-seeded Pistons to a 30-20 defeat of the ninth-seeded Clippers in township recreation department fourth grade boys' basketball league first-round playoff action.

Daniel Feldman paced the Clippers with 12 points. Tyler Udland (10 points) and A.J. O'Leary (eight points) sparked the seventh-seeded Kings to a 20-17 defeat of the lOth-seeded Jazz in Friday night's other first-round game. Lex Blum scored four points in a losing cause. Joey Kizel scored 19 points and Alex Rosenberg dropped in 12 points Saturday morning, leading the top-seeded Grizzlies to a 33-19 quarterfinal-round defeat of the Pistons.

Hamilton scored eight points for the Pistons. Jacob Weissman (11 points) and Jeffrey Eisenbud (10 points) paced the fourth-seeded Suns to a 33-13 quarterfinal-round defeat of the Wizards on Saturday. Michael Brown topped the Wizards with eight points. Robert DeCastro scored 18 points and Jacob Riesenberg chipped in with two points and five rebounds in the third-seeded Mavericks' 26-21 quarterfinal-round defeat of the sixth-seeded Pacers on Saturday. The Pacers received eight points from Michael DiTomasso.

William Spelman (12 points) and David Spelman (five points) propelled the second-seeded Raptors to a 23-19 quarterfinal-round defeat of the Kings on Saturday. O'Leary scored nine points in a losing cause. 5th grade boys' league William Bonomo (15 points) and Kyle Roth (14 points) propelled the eighth-seeded Heat past the ninth-seeded Knicks 33-27 in first-round playoff action Friday night. Doug Mogan scored eight points for the Knicks. Oak Knoll cruised to the state team title with a 62-37 record as it enjoyed a 10-win margin over runner-up Ramapo. Millburn finished in third place at 45-54 followed by Morristown (44-55) and Columbia (41-58). MILLER NOTES Riesebeck was scheduled to compete in the state individual championships Tuesday night at Morristown High School. Five Millers Riesebeck, Weinstein, Podhoretz, Szklarska and Duane participated in the United States Fencing Association Junior Olympics held Feb. 15-18 in Columbus, Ohio.

Riesebeck finished 33rd in a field of 75 in cadet women's sabre. Weinstein (71st) and Podhoretz (75th) competed in the 100-competitor cadet women's epee tournament. Sklarska took 59th place in the field of 101 in junior women's sabre. Duane finished 54th in a field of 136 in cadet women's foil. Weinstein and Podhoretz placed second and third in sophomore epee at the recent NJSIAA freshman-sophomore tournament.
