THE WISCONSIN JEWISH CHRONICLE 9 June 30, 1944 On Way to Success By AN AMERICAN SOLDIER The author of the following letter, a private in the United States Army, was one of those Yanks in the Mediterranean area fortunate enough to get a furlough for the holidays to Palestine. In the following letter he gives his impressions of his visit. Editor. ates the financial part of the government" and referred to the alleged influence which Bernard Ba-ruch has upon government affairs. "A very splendid Jew from New York, Barney Baruch, is shaping all the policies of the Administration, especially post-war policies," Bilbo said.

"I think Rabbi Wise is the last man in the world who ought to be complaining against discrimination against minority races," Bilbo continued, "when his nationality has received more consideration at the hands of the present Administration than any other nationality in the United States." TRANSJORDAN ASKS FREEDOM FROM MANDATE Demand for Abrogation of Mandate Rejected by Britain Jerusalem (JTA) The British Government has rejected a demand submitted by the cabinet of Transjordan asking abolition of the mandate and complete independence, it was learned here. Any new arrangements of treaties concerning the status of Transjordan must wait until after the Hull Says People of U. S. Concerned Over Murder of Hungarian Jews Washington (JTA) Secretary of State Cordell Hull said that the people of the United States are greatly concerned over the murder and assassination of Jews going on in Hungary, largely at the instigation of the German Government. He said that many individuals, groups and organizations had been voicing their protests at the massacre and added that there cannot be too many joining in this protest.

The Secretary's statement came in response to a request at the press conference that he comment on the House Foreign Affairs Committee approval of the resolution condemning the extermination of the Jews in Hungary. SENATOR BILBO ATTACKS JEWS ON FEPC ISSUE Administration Favors Jews More than Other Groups, Bilbo Says Washington (JTA) Asserting that Jews "have received more consideration at the hands of the Administration than any other nationality in the United States," and that in the government departments "there is no lack of the Jewish nationality," Senator Theodore Bilbo assailed Jewish support of President Roosevelt's Fair Employment Practice Committee. Bilbo's attack was made prior to refusal by the Senate by a vote of 31 to 28 to strike out from the bill appropriating funds for government bureaus the sum of $500,000 allotted to the FEPC. The Senate's action, which followed several days of filibustering by Southern members, guarantees existence of the FEPC for another year. The Mississippi Senator took issue with Rabbi Stephen S.

Wise, who testified before a Congressional committee urging the creation of a permanent FEPC. He added that Henry Morgenthau Jr. "oper Some of the younger generation of Arabs have taken a liking to the Jewish cafes. In the Jewish cafes of course, women as well as men are admitted, while the Arabs will not permit any Arab girls in their own. The Arab women are veiled and there is no commingling of men and women among them except in marriage.

The Arabs of course make up for this stinting of women by being permitted to take many wives. How many take advantage of this I cannot say. I presume polygamy is a luxury which only the more adventurous or better situated Arabs can indulge in. Despite of all the talk of friction between Arab and Jew I believe that, below the soil, there is a better side of the story to be told. It seems to me that some of 1 JUNE SHIELMAN June Shielman, daughter of Mr.

In the States, some years back, I was a member of Young Judaea and I re member the time I used to carry those blue and white boxes for the Jewish National Fund, collecting pennies to buy land for the settlement of Jews in Palestine.

Somehow, despite all of this, the idea of a Jewish Homeland always appeared to me something of the far distant future. But here I am, and seems that the "Future" is here. At first one thinks he must be dreaming. I can understand the psalmist's saying, "When the Lord returned the captivity of Israel, were as dreamers." Let me illustrate. This morning I was walking down the business section of Tel Aviv and I looked up at a sign to see just where I was.

The street sign was Rashi St. In America, Rashi was something for the bright boy in Cheder study over, but in Palestine Rashi is a Street. I walk along Rashi St. It looks different from the typical down town street oi any progressive city. Shops and stores and various descriptions.

But somehow I cannot but believe that there is something different here. It carries me back historically to the days of the founding of America to the days of the Pilgrims, when they gave towns Biblical names, such Salem, for the Hebrew Shalom, and New Canaan. The Puritans were refugees too as these people who have set tled in Palestine refugees who were concerned with something more than getting ahead in the world. They had a larger ideal a Commonwealth, as do these Palestine settlers. And if you look back to their history, you know also that they had to face much the same kind of criticism and opposition that the Palestine Pilgrims have faced.

Ice Cream in Tel-Aviv Outwardly there is little to distinguish Tel Aviv from any ordinary town. The people seem to like the same sort of thing the American like. There are many stores which sell ice cream, for example. The Hebrew for it is "glida," and the people seem to like American moving pictures, which of course are explained by Hebrew captions. My speaking knowledge of Hebrew is limited, although I know enough of the language to get around.

The two most important Hebrew words to know are "Beva-kasha," meaning "please," and meaning "thank The Palestinians are not intolerant if you drop into Yiddish, if you can't help yourself, despite the fact that they do not permit the publication of anything in the Yiddish language. To me it was fascinating to see pretty high school girls rattling away in Hebrew and throwing in now and then an American word, such as "okay" which they have gotten from the moving pictures. It is in Jerusalem that one get more of the feel of what the ancient Israel of Bible days must have been. In the "Old City" one, of course, may yet see the remaining Wailing Wall of the Temple and the narrow streets. The Arabs, still in great part wearing the garb which must have been the type of clothes the Hebrews of old wore, add to the feeling of antiquity.

But the very topography of Jerusalem with its many hills, gives something of a solemnity to the appearance of the city. Cafe life is highly developed in Palestine. I was going to say that the Jews in this development have imitated the European style, but then the Arabs show the same disposition to cafes. You can see many Arabs sitting in open air cafes, drinking Turkish coffee and smoking those big nargilahs. to take and drc off excess poundage and dresses are very reveal 1 I Destroy Ancient Cemetery Stockholm (JPS) The ancient Jewish cemetery at Randers, Denmark, has been destroyed by the Nazis, it is reported here.

In the meantime relations between the two countries will have to continue on their present basis, the reply said. Upon receipt of the British reply, the Transjordan cabinet resigned. Its resignation was not accepted by Emir Abdullah after a conference with Sir Harold Mac-Michael, British High Commissioner for Palestine and Transjordan, who made a flying trip from Jerusalem to Amman, the capital of Transjordan. Under the terms of Article 25 of the mandate, Transjordan was included in the mandated territory of Palestine. But by virtue of a saving clause in the article, the British Government as mandatory, was empowered to withhold application of any clauses of the mandate which she might consider to be inapplicable to Transjordan, and to provide it with such administration as she might think fit.

In the British view, Transjordan unlike Palestine fell within the area in which the McMahon promise of independence applied. The British Government, therefore, in 1922, secured approval by the Council of the League of Nations of a memorandum proposing that Transjordan be exempted from all those clauses dealing with the Holy Places and the Jewish National Home. On the strength of this, Jews have been refused immigration into Transjordan and the right to purchase land there, a step which they resent as being an infraction of the article of the joint mandate which provides against discrimination on grounds of race, religion or language. Charges Parties Exploit 'Re ligious Animosities" New York (JPS) The political primaries this year in Ala bama, Florida and Oregon "have forecast a dangerous exploitation, both authorized and unauthorized by political parties, of race and religious animosities to influence voters," it was charged by Everett Arthur Robert Clinchy, president of The National Conference of Christians and Jews. At a joint press conference Mr.

Clinchy and Dr. Arthur Compton, physicist and co-chairman of the Conference, presented a mixed picture, stating that "the extent of communication and practice of teamwork among American citizens of differing religions are now far in advance of any point reached in World War but at the same time "there is more anti-Catholic and anti- Protestant as well as anti-Jewish talk in all circles of society today." I should not be surprised if the Arab primitiveness did not have something of a salutary effect on the Jews and I believe also the Jewish modernity is exerting a still more salutary effect on the long stagnant Arab culture.

Above all Palestine cities, the American soldiers on furlough prefer Tel Aviv. It is more like what they have been used to. And then there is the fine swimming of the Mediterranean to be had there, though this, to be sure, is available also at Haifa and other parts. I think it is a great tribute to the Jewish development of Palestine that the Red Cross selected Tel Aviv for its soldiers hostel. The only other city in the Near East to be so honored is the very old city of Cairo in Egypt.

(Copyright, 1944.) UNIVERSITY IN JERUSALEM PLANS LARGE EXPANSION Over $3,000,000 Needed to Establish New Medical and Social Schools Jerusalem (JTA) A large-scale expansion of the facilities of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in the five-year period follow ing the war were outlined here by Rector Dr. Leon Mayer and Administrator Dr. Werner Senator. The University heads told a press conference that chief aims of the reconstruction program which they estimated would require more than $3,000,000 were establishment of a medical school and of a school of economics and social science to train administrators for the Jewish national institutions, the Jewish municipalities here, the Palestine Government and, also, Jewish communities in Europe. Stressing the great role that the university must play in the period after the war because of the destruction of the cultural facilities of European Jewry, Drs.

Mayer and Senator divulged that the university also plans enlargement of its research facilities, expansion of its library and training of teachers for service in Palestine and abroad. They said that special emphasis has been placed on establishment of a medical school because of the anticipated shortage of Jewish doctors in the decade following the war owing to the fact that Jews have been excluded from the medical schools of most of Europe in recent years. The funds necessary to finance this ambitious program fall into two categories; money needed for current expenditures over a five-year period, and that required to erect and equip the buildings which will house the new schools. They estimated that about $1,200,000 will be needed for current expenses, while about $2,000,000 will be required for capital expenditure. The first amount, they said, must be secured by increased fund-rais ing drives in Palestine and among the Jews throughout the world, while the latter amount should be raised by large non-recurrent contributions from wealthy individuals.

Many Jews in Cossack Units Honored for Gallantry in Battle Moscow (JTA) The Cossacks whose very name struck terror into the hearts of the Jews of Russia before the Revolution now have hundreds of Jewish officers and men in their ranks, according to a report on Cossack front line operation appearing in Moscow newspapers. Among the heroes who have distinguished themselves in the various encounters between the Cossack troops and the Germans, are Squadron Commander Joseph Ry-abchinsky, who was killed leading his men in a successful assault on a strongly-defended enemy village; Capt. Samuel Fronkel, who participated in the battle for the historic Dubno fortress; and Lieut. Hirsch Fastikovsky whose tank unit accounted for four German "Ferdinand" tanks and 100 men in a recent battle.
