September 13, 1968 THE WISCONSIN JEWISH CHRONICLE 11 Washington SPORTS By Jess WORLD Silver Week MILTON FRIEDMAN the following about Meisl in the London Jewish Chronicle: "It was Dr. Willy Meisl who, together with Dr. V. V. Rosenfeld, now an octogenarian living in London, was mainly instrumental in setting up temporary headquarters of the Maccabi World Union in London when they had to be transferred from Berlin soon after the Maccabi movement in Germany had been banned by the Nazis.

"Dr. Meisl's dedication to amateur sports stood the Maccabi movement in this country in good stead. He acted as liaison between erstwhile leaders of the Maccabi in Germany and Austria, many of whom were either confined to D. P. camps in Europe or had resided temporarily in Italy and the Far East before emigrating to Israel.

When the first national football (soccer) team came to Britain in 1949 to play against Arsenal and Notts County he ran a seminar for them at Maccabi Houoe in Hampstead. "lie win long be remembered as one of Jewry's great sportsmen and promoter of amateur sports. The Maccabi World Union will be eternally grateful to him for the services he rendered." I'l i'lii own i Games, he has three sub 4:01.0 i clockings this season Can ada's Abigail Hoffman von an international 800-meter race in Norway with a 2:06.6 clocking, then placed second in 2:07.4 after being spiked during a race in England. Morocco's Youth and Sports Ministry announced that they would not participate in the Olympic soccer championships in Mexico City because of a scheduled meeting with Israel on Oct. 13.

WILLY MEISL, 72, one of Europe's most famous sportswriters, died in Lugano, Switzerland, in June. An athlete in his youth, Meisl played on Austrian national soccer teams and was a national swimming and water polo champion. He was a sportswriter in Germany before World War II, and served as foreign editor of Britain's World Sports magazine after the war. Pierre Gildesgame wrote Rabbi Rosen Raps Russ Occupation; Praises Rumania LONDON JTA) Chief Rabbis Moses Kosen ot Rumania, said here that "nothing could do more harm to the ideals of justice, freedom and peace, for which all Socialist countries strive, than the methods of force such as the armed intervention and occupation of the territory of one Socialist country by another." Dr. Rosen's remark, a reference to the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, was made in an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency during the rabbi's brief stop-over here on his way to South America.

The Rumanian-Jewish leader, who is a member of the Rumanian Parliament, told JTA that he was going to Buenos Aires to attend the international conference of Latin American Jewish Communities. Dr. Rosen described Rumania as "a loyal member of the Warsaw Pact" but said it believed that "good relations between nations must be based on mutual observance of each other's sovereignty and independence, on the principles of equal rights of all states and noninterference in their internal affairs." Dr. Goldmann Sends Message of Congratulations to Rumania LONDON (JTA) Dr. Nahum Goldmann sent a message of con Chi.

Convention Events At least the young knew where they stood for the moment. They were spared the torment assailing middle-aged Jews. A self-described liberal asked: "How can I be a consistent civil libertarian when I am convinced that Stokely Carmichael is as dangerous as Sirhan Sirhan? I don't know what laws apply. An agitator like Carmichael is far more dangerous than the Klu Kluxers and American Nazis. He must be put away." This outburst was evoked by Carmichael's address to an Arab student convention at the University of Michigan.

Denouncing both America and Israel, Carmichael said he and other Negro militants were ready to take up arms and die if necessary to help the Arabs free Palestine. Carmichael boasted: "We will become the fifth column. They can't stop us There are many of us who are getting prepared and we intend to fight imperialism. We will fight for Egypt." Jews of the "New Left" were asked to comment on Carmichael. Their replies ranged from disinterest to a feeling that he was only trying to be dramatic.

They made plain that one must accept Black Power fanaticism as "a phase of black emancipation just like Jewish emancipation years ago in Israel. There was a lot of rhetoric and violence fvom Jewish nationalists. Can't you accept a black man or an Arab as being as human as a Jew?" Says US Jewish Community Has Serious Youth Problem for First Time in History ARTHUR ABRAHAM GOLD has been appointed leader of the British track and field team for the Mexico Olympics. Secretary of the British Amateur Athletic Board since 1965, Gold, 51, is a i lormer nign jumper wno nas coached the field event for many years. Britain was invaded this summer by a number of Israeli sports teams.

They included the track and field, yachting and national youth tennis teams. The track and field squad of six men and five women was led by manager and coach Abraham Green and national coach David Kushnir. Israeli records were set by Mrs. Hannah Shizifi in the 8000-meter run, 2:08.5, and by Ural Visnizer with a 4:09.6 clocking in the mile. Mrs.

Shizifi was a gold medalist at the 1966 Asian Games. During a recent visit to Israel, Pierre Gildesgame, chairman of the International Maccabiah Games Committee and the Mac-cabi World Union, announced that a record 1,800 Jewish athletes from more than 30 nations would compete in the Eighth World Maccabiah Games in Israel, July 28-August 6, 1969. West Germany, Spain, Greece and a number of Latin American nations, are expected to participate in the games for the first time. Samuel Hatoff, 43, a native of New York City, has been named executive director of the United States Committee-Sports for Israel. Hatoff has represented the Joint Defense Appeal, the United Jewish Appeal and other philanthropic causes.

He served as eastern regional director of the City of Hope for more than ten years and then became a management and public relations executive for private industry. The U. S. Committee-Sports for Israel's national office is located at 147 W. 42nd New York City.

The building, slated for completion in 1970, is the first in a nationwide B'nai B'rith senior citizens housing program. The non-profit project is aided by government-secured mortgage loans. This one is sponsored by B'nai B'rith's Seligman J. Strauss Lodge in Wilkes Carre. Ninth of Ab Why is it that some people do not relax their observances until the middle or the end of the 10th day of Ab (they do not eat meat until then, etc.) when the fast is on the Ninth day of Ab? The fast and mourning procedure of the Ninth of Ab is in commemoration of the destruction of the Temple which took place on that date in ancient his-tory.

The Talmud (Tractate Taanit) and the Codes explain that the fire which was kindled by the destroyers of the Temple on the ninth day of Ab was still burning on the tenth day of Ab. Therefore they add a part (Isser-les' gloss to the Codes) or a whole day more of mourning to display their sadness over the tragic fate that overtook the holy Temple in Jerusalem. tive social reactions" but now "a Jewish youth problem is beginning to manifest itself." Dr. Berger, who headed a delegation of 13 eastern Jewish camp directors, spoke at the close of a four-day study of the 27-year-old Institute's methods in helping Jewish college students rediscover Judaism's meaning in the modern world. He lauded the Brandeis Institute camp as an important "pilot project" in using contemporary techniques in efforts to re-involve Jewish youth in a heritage "that heretofore has protected strong family ties and healthy social patterns among the young." Wisconsin is the No.

Excluding cottage cheese, we manufactured a total of 820,379,000 pounds of cheese last year. 3 By No "Jewish" Response to WASHINGTON Was there a special "Jewish" response to the events at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago? It appears that Jews responded like everybody else only more so. Many young people were troubled but it was a 22-year-old student who committed suicide in despair at Columbia University.

Her action indicated the degree of commitment of youth to the cause of peace and the new politics. The problem is different for older Jews. They have traditionally supported dissent and the outer fringes of civil liberties but r.re now caught between radical leftist anarchy and the growing right-wing backlash. A consensus of Jewish delegates at Chicago indicated dismay over rolice behavior and the management of the convention. Included in the informal sampling were delegates pledged to Vice-President Humphrey as well as McCarthy supporters.

Most Jewish eyewitnesses found the use of brute force by authorities excessive. Provocations were acknowledged. A Personal Dilemma This reporter interviewed at random approximately 50 hippies, yippies and other young demonstrators. About one-fourth identified themselves as Jewish. Some were militant in asserting then-Judaism.

Two girls wore mezuz-zah necklaces, a young man displayed the Star of David, another youth proudly identified himself with Habonim, the Zionist youth organization. They had in common one main cause, peace in Vietnam. Another objective, phrased in various ways, was to protest the "hypocrisy" of the Establishment. It was a different proposition for Jews over 35 or 40 who were identified with Jewish causes as well as the Democratic Party machine. One delegate said it was for him not only a dilemma but a personal and Jewish dilemma.

"I saw cops beat and curse some kids and I got sick," he said. "My own daughter, against my wishes, is somewhere in that crowd. She is convinced that the demonstrations are essential for a better society and to stop the war. She carried a sign that said, 'Get the troops out of Saigon, Prague, and She was raised in a liberal, Jewish home and I encouraged her to read about Nazism and our people. Now she is for humanity and against war.

It is very simple for her. What can I say? What can I do?" Ideological Chasm Also Apart from the generation gap, an ideological chasm emerged. A typical delegate said he was interested in Israeli survival and the preservation of democracy in the United States. He saw the Democratic Party committed to these aims. While he thought the extent of U.S.

involvement in Vietnam was a mistake, "the danger of Communism is even more obvious after the war last year in the Middle East." Younger Jews said it looked to them as if Israel were able to take care of herself. There were more urgent problems. After Vietnam, there were "exploitation, police brutality, Fascism and racism in our cities." Nixon and Humphrey were ridiculed. President Johnson drew scathing denunciation. The old politics had to go.

But it was not so clear what was to replace it. a Beigin Urges Small Nations to Form Common Front Against Red Subversion LOS ANGELES (JTA) For the first time in its history, the American Jewish community has a serious youth problem which includes a "growing behavioral pathology which cannot be swept under the rug," a New York youth educator told a meeting at the Brandeis Camp Institute. The educator, Dr. Graenum Berger, a camp and education consultant of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York, added that loss of faith, failing family controls and "a moral and pathological decline" among Jewish young people was evoking concern among national Jewish leaders and organizations. Dr.

Berger cited estimates that 35 to 40 per cent of the participants in the hippie center of Haight-Asbury in San Francisco had been Jewish, in asserting that the Jewish "profile was never more fragile than now." He declared that "a decade ago Jewish youth was not involved with sex or drug escapades, alcoholism, suicide charts and nega 3T mU0 gratulations to President Nicolas Ceausescu of Rumania on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of Rumania's liberation from Nazi control. The message, sent on behalf of the World Jewish Congress, which Dr. Goldmann heads, (expressed appreciation for the i equality and freedom of religion accorded its Jewish citizens by Rumania. home and from Israeli sources abroad. It was estimated that some 20 to 30 Israeli nationals were in Czechoslovakia at the time of the invasion.

Only three or four turned up at the Swedish Embassy in Prague for help and information, it was disclosed. The Swedish Embassy has represented Israeli interests in Czechoslovakia since the latter severed diplomatic relations with Israel following the June, 1967 Six-Day War. Some of the Israelis, who had to abandon cars and belongings or spend all of their money for gasoline to cross the border, were aided with funds. Returning Israelis said the Czech police were helpful in showing them roads out of the country through border control posts where no Soviet troops were near. It appears that no Israeli nationals were detained.

Weekly Reading Why is a small portion of the Sabbath's weekly reading: read from the Torah on Monday and Thursday mornings and on Saturday afternoon? This was designed so that no three days will ever pass in Jewish life wtihout the Torah having been read in the synagogue. The reason for selecting Monday and Thursday is because originally the rabbinical court would be in session on those days, and more people would come into the cities to conduct their business in the courts, thus, providing a larger attendance in the synagogue. The reason for selecting Saturday afternoon is that this would cover the people who could not get to the synagogue either on Monday or Thursday. They would 1 have at least one additional read-! ing besides the regular Sabbath morning reading. EVERYBODY WINS IN TTH1E FLAMELESS ELECTRIC CLOTHES DRYER TEL AVIV (JTA) Menachem Beigin, leader of the Herut Party, called on small nations all over the world to form a common front "against pressure, threats and the subversive activities of totalitarian Communism." Mr.

Beigin, who is minister without portfolio in the national coalition Government, spoke at a party meeting here. He denounced the Soviet invasion and occupation of Czechoslovakia as a "moral and political defeat" for Russia and its allies and said the Czechoslovakian episode pointed up the problem of all small nations. The Herut Party decided to hold a mass protest rally against the Soviet occupation. (In Melbourne, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry said in a statement issued today, that the tanks and guns used in the Middle East in an attempt to crush Israel were of the same origin as those that spearheaded the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet Russia and its Warsaw Pact allies. The Council's statement constituted Australian Jewry's collective protest against the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia.

"We watch with horror," it said, "as the totalitarian forces directed from Moscow embark now on the ruthless enslavement of Czechoslovakia. We condemn those who use guns and tanks to oppress a people and we observe with sadness that tanks of the same origin had been used in the Middle East in an attemDt to crush Israeli nationals who were caught in Czechoslovakia by the Soviet-led invasion last week experienced no difficulties leaving that country and were treated extremely well by Czech, Austrian and Swiss border authorities, it was learned in Jerusalem today.
