THE WISCONSIN JEWISH CHRONICLE October 5, 1951 SPORTS WORLD Three Ex-Fighters Tops As Third Man in Ring By Ben Feingold (An American Jewish Press Feature) Bill Wolf: Gordon and Rosen High in RBI Department Three Jewish ballplayers are among the top men in both major leagues as the season came to a dramatic close. In the telling statistical columns, Sid Gordon of the Boston Braves and Al Rosen of the Cleveland Indians are high in the runs-batted-in division, while Saul Rogovin of the White Sox is earning a reputation as one of the better pitchers in the game. Sid Cordon is having one of his best years this season, and it looks as if he may surpass even the runs-batted-in mark set when he was with the New Yoik Giants. Back in 1947, Sid drove home 107 tallies. He already has 102 to his credit this year and has a good chance to hit between 110 and 115 before the last inning of the season is put down in the record books.

Sid is neck-and-neck with Irwin of the Giants in the president of Hadassah, lauded the "intelligent editorial guidance" of the English-Jewish press in assisting the cause of Israel. "It has chronicled with admirable accuracy and telling effectiveness the problems and accomplishments of American and world Jewry and by its intelligent editorial guidance has helped posit the great task that Jews the world over must prosecute if the Jewish community and the only democracy in the Middle East are to retain their spiritual vigor." Continued advancement in reporting the events of vital concern to world Jewry by the English-Jewish press was hailed by Rabbi Irving Miller, American leader of the World Jewish Congress. Rabbi Miller expressed the hope that the English-Jewish press would "continue to prosper, secure in the knowledge that it plays a vital role in informing the American Jewish community of matters of the most important nature." That the American Jewish community "relies heavily" on the nation's English-Jewish press "for an exchange of information and opinion regarding purely Jewish concern" was cited by Irving Kane, national chairman of the National Community Relations Advisory Council, on the eve of Newspaper Week. "It is only through the wide dissemination of reliable information, the free expression of opinion, and public debate on contro irVi trii in lnti In recent years, the fight game has seen the emergence of Jewish referee to the top strata of fistic officiating. Ex-fighters, themselves, these boys are young, fast and alert.

They know how to take complete charge in the ring. Among tr.e top-flighters are Ruby Goldstein, Mark Conn, and Maurice "Red" Goodman. Leading lights in fistiana acclaim Goldstein, "Ex-Jewel of the Ghetto," the best referee in the business. Ruby, a crack liquor salesman in-between refereeing chores, is very popular in the trade because so many of them are fight fans. The top-notch separator speaks a fluent Yiddish and serves as a beckoning attraction at Jewish clubs along the eastern seaboard in the capacity of a speaker.

Goldstein, who refereed the "Sugar Boy" Robinson-Randy Tur-pin bout for the middleweight title, was adjudged entirely justified in halting the scrap vhen Turpin was helpless, although there were a few declaimers. Regarding this, Ruby told us ish, his face became redder than a beet suffering from high blood pressure! "Red" Gets a Charley Horse Maurice "Red" Goodman has come along by leaps and bounds since first donning the gray shirt of a boxing referee. He attended Seward Park High School on the east side of New York City and it was there that fame of a nature first came his way. For many years the school's football team had failed to score a single point. It had become known as "The Scoreless Wonders." It fell to Maurice's lot to tally the first touchdown for Alma Mater, an event often discussed when Seward Park alumni get together to shmoos.

Maurice's appetite is prodigious, and it's a treat to see him put away a kosher meal in one of his favorite east side restaurants. Goodman's favorite meal, for the record, starts off with a plentiful serving of chopped liver with chicken fat. Then comes chicken soup with noodles and mondlin, flanken, steaming French fried potatoes, lima beans, sauerkraut, urday's Hero," a Columbia picture which opened in New York, provides an inside look into the sordid aspects of college football. It ruthlessly exposes methods by which grid stars are used to increase university gate receipts, and it hits hard at the traditional talk about doing or dying for the dear old alma mater. race to lead the league. Sid has already topped last year's home run total by rapping out 29 to hold the number five spot in the national league. In the American league, it is Al Rosen who is the big gun. Rosen is third in the R.B.I, columns with 97. At last count, he was tied for fourth place home run honrs with Berra of the Yanks.

Each has 24. Saul Rogovin has added another to his winners, this one against his former teammates, the Detroit Tigers. Defeating them, 4-3, Saul made it 12 wins and seven losses so far. It was his third triumph over a row over his old buddies. Saul has shown himself to be one of the more dependable hurlers of the season.

The New York Giants are entitled to some wishful thinking these days. They might well wish that Rogovin was in their ranks to help in the pennant drive. He might have been. The Giants once had the opportunity to get Rogovin after he was recommended to them by Dolly Stark, the well-known former umpire. At the close of the third round, Goodman developed a charley-horse in his left leg and was forced to quit. A sub-referee took over. During World War II he rose to the rank of major, refereeing more than 1,000 bouts in the China-Burma-India theatre of operations. Mark, a very handsome lad, has Celtic features, and because of his name and puss, is often mistaken for an Irishman. His non-Jewish appearance led Conn to an interesting incident in Ceylon, India, oe night years ago. Two GIs, an Irishman and a Jew, were opponents in the ring.

Through the American Jewish Pross, the news and feature service established by the American Association of English Jewish Newspapers of which The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle is a member, the nation's leading Jewish spokesmen saluted the progress of the English-Jewish press.

Browdy, president of the Zionist Organization of America. "In the struggle for establishment of a free and independent state of Israel," Browdy continued, "the English-Jewish press has played a role of paramount importance in rallying all constructive forces for our cause. Moreover, it now continues to serve as a most effective instrument in the fight for Jewish survival and for mobilizing maximum support for the effort to safeguard Israel's political and economic stability." A call to American Jewry to "give greater attention to the English-Jewish press" came from Judge Meir Steinbrink, national chairman of the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation League, who asserted that the nation's English-Jewish press "has the mechanics and the talent to produce good newspapers and journals to keep us well informed on subjects of vital concern to Jewry." Speaking on behalf of more than 300,000 women Zionists of America, Mrs. Rose Halprin, national university squad in his vicinity would turn in such information to thinking Con was Irish and favoring his opponent, would mutter under his breath, in sheer despair "Gahargit zulstu varin.
