Students co-sponsoring AquaFest celebration High school jazz concert tonight Millburn High School will present its "Night of Jazz concert tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature the high school's award-winning stage band, a 29-piece ensemble of musicians performing many different styles of jazz music. In addition, guest artists from the professional jazz circuit will perform with the stage band. Ben Budish is the band's student director. Band members are Marc Plotkin, Chris Cino, Andrew Van Tassel, Sarah Nathan and Greg James (saxophone), Zach Savage and Courtney Beighley (clarinet), Yemin Shi (flute), Ben Budish, Ben Goldberg, Jeff Tornick, Zach Satlin and Scott Nadelson (trumpet), David Colin, Nathan Bar-bakoff, Kelly Gilsenan and Nipun Kant (trombone), Iris Priddy and Sam Budish (piano), Holly Fried and Jake McNulty (guitar), Ben Jacobs and Evan Levine (bass) and A.J. Somers, Andy Kehl and Kenny Flax (drumspercussion).

Brian Luftig and Jacob Camitta are the band's sound Small jazz combos, including the Millburn High School Saxophone Quartet and the Lab Jazz Band, also will be performing. MMS rummage sale set for May 8 The Millburn Middle School PTO will hold a rummage sale Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school.

The event will be held rain or shine. Parents of middle school students have been collecting gently used clothing, sporting goods, toys, games, books, bikes and baby items. Items for the rummage sale can be dropped off at the middle school's lower gym Wednesday, May 5, between 5 and 7 p.m.; Thursday, May 6, between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.; and Friday, May 7, between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Scholastic boosters offering college aid Township businesses have come on board to support the township's inaugural AquaFest celebration, scheduled for Saturday, May 22, from 10 a.m.

Major corporate sponsors include Hatch Mott MacDonald, a national environmental engineering firm headquartered here, PNC Bank, Arizona Iced Tea, La Strada Restaurant and Wolfhead Athletics. "The event will help township residents learn how to become positive contributors to the quality of drinking water in our town." Janet Mangano of PNC Bank said, "AquaFest is just the kind of community activity that appeals to PNC Bank because it is educational, appeals to families and supports environmental health, and because students are involved in the planning," said Janet Mangano of PNC Bank. Millburn High School senior Marcy Levitan, along with members of the school's Environmental Club, has been actively in packages. Since 1947, more than 850 students trying to close the shortfall in their college funding package, have received awards from the Boosters totaling nearly $925,000. "For many deserving students, the challenge of assembling a financial package to attend college becomes more difficult each year," said Boosters president John Ward. "The cost of textbooks alone can reach upwards of $500 a semester.

"Just like death and taxes, we can depend on college tuition cost increases each year," Ward added. According to The College Board, tuition at public universities grew by 14 percent to an average of $4,694, while at private universities the increase was 6 percent to an average of $19,710. At the same time, states are spending less on higher education, an average decrease of 2.2 percent with some states cutting spending by 10 percent. "I want to make a difference in my community," Marcy said, "and AquaFest is an event that I can really believe in." She has taken AquaFest as her senior project and devotes many hours per week to planning and to recruiting sponsors. "Celebrating clean water" is the theme of the event, which will focus on many ways homeowners can have beautiful landscapes and comfortable lifestyles, and at the same time contribute less pollution to drinking water supplies and woodland streams. Those attending AquaFest will be treated to a hands-on, family-friendly and very likely wet day of water learning. In addition to door prizes contributed by township businesses and municipal agencies, there will be balloons, craft activities and games will be offered for children and adults alike.

Miss Frizzle from "The Magic School Bus" will make a guest appearance. Residents should bring their used batteries for recycling. AquaFest is free and open to the public.
