The very language of Kuhn's statements, on the other hand, reveals the planned malice behind them. It is general, it evades specific persons, it is intended not to help the United States but to malign a people.

No people should be at the mercy of such an enemy of humankind as the Nazi agent, Fritz Kuhn, and his irresponsible mouthings. The Kuhns must be taught responsibility. When they are compelled to furnish legal proof of their loose chatter, they will be more careful of what they say. "Stop Thief!" Yes. Stop Mr.

Sheriff Orders Sale of N. Y. Nazi Camp Yaphank, Long Island (WNS) Wanna buy a Nazi camp? Sheriff Jacob S. Dreyer of Suffolk County is offering for sale Camp Siegfried after having seized it to enforce collection of the $10,000 fine imposed on the German American Settlement League, operator of the camp, for violating the state civil rights law. Dreyer is advertising the camp for sale once a week in local newspapers in execution of a judgment entered against the League because of its failure to pay the fine.

If the fine isn't paid in six weeks the camp will be sold. Meanwhile, County Judge L. Barron Hill, who presided at the trial of the six officials of the League, denied defense counsel's motion for a new trial on the ground that no additional evidence had been offered. At the same time, Justice Peter M. Daly in Supreme Court at Jamaica granted a stay in execution of the sentence on the six convicted officials on the ground that there may be a doubt as to the legality of their sent to concentration camps following last month's mass arrests, it was revealed when George L.

Brandt, American consul, arrived here after studying the Jewish situation in all parts of Germany as an official emissary of the American delegation to the Evian refugee conference. Mr. Brandt's activities arc said to be linked to efforts to prevail upon Germany to allow emigres to take a part of their capital with then1. The German government is reported to be willing to free Jewish prisoners provided they obtain immigvatinn vias, but such visas cannot be obtained unless the refugees are permitted to take some of their property with them. The principal achievement of the conference, according to Rabbi Wise was in its "sounding a note of humanity and protest against the problems arising out of the actions of a totalitarian government.

It was remarkable that thirty nations came together and practically agreed that the problem was one of humanity and not the concern of a few groups of While the Joint Distribution Committee was the only American private agency to be represented at the conference, it offered no advice. It did, however, pledge its utmost support to the conference's program of refugee aid. "In my judgment" said Rabbi Wise, "it now becomes the duty of Americans to back up the leadership of our President and Government, to accept the humane judgment of the Conference, to implement the work of Mr. Taylor by generous help to the people it states to be the victims of a brutality which has challenged the free governments of the world and should challenge our sympathy as human beings, and our resentment as free men and citizens of a great Myron C. Wise, national campaign chairman of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, who attended the International Refugee Conference at Evian, France, as an unofficial ob-6ervort attributed that conference's success to the personal efforts of Myron C. Taylor, chairman of the American delegation. Rabbi Wise's statements were made to ship news reporters who interviewed him on his return July 21 aboard the S. S.

$40,000 Raised for Los Angeles Sanitorium at Banquet Los Angeles (JTA) More than $40,000 was contributed for the Los Angeles Sanitorium and Ex-Patient's Home at a dinner in connection with the tuberculosis sanitorium's four-day convention, attended by more than 1,000 delegates. Autocrats hate, autocrats fear, the free expression of man's thoughts and aspirations. The mind is the enemy of autocracy. Autocracy is the enemy of the mind. Of what use is it to recount the contribution of the Jew to the literature, the drama, the philology, the general culture of Italy? Autocrats do not deal in gratitude; they do not deal in rewards, except to the brute forces that further their selfish, their degraded and degrading will. The Italian gesture against Jewish authorship looks, at this distance, like yet another example of totalitarian sadism, of cruelty for cruelty's sake.

It is a fitting action from a state that glorifies war, that makes mock of peace, that trains even its children to boar arms, to throw bombs, to worship blood and battle, that practises against unhostile countries, that plays the brigand in international relations, that together with Germany and Japan has stood all the laws of fraternal decency upon their heads. Yes, Italy is the country that "civilized" Ethiopia. Great civilizers, Mussolini, Hitler and the Mikado. And, in case you didn't know, the Mikado is the author of a poem on peace I'll take my Mikado from Gilbert and Sullivan. The Arrogant Kuhn The old technique of the pickpocket was to rob his victim and then set up a yell of "Stop Thief!" This is the technique of Fritz Kuhn, head of the American Nazis, when he accuses every Jew in the nation of being an enemy to the United States.

The enemy, of course, Kuhn and his Nazis Germans who wish to impose the goose-step upon free America. No sensible person needs to be told that his anti-Jewish charges are ridiculous. At the same time something should be done, and done at once, to make it impossible for such a malicious beast to slaughter an entire people. Had he said that some Jews were enemies of the country, it would have been bad and misleading enough; but to include every Jew is, besides being stupid and laughable, egregious-ly vile. It is a libel upon the intelligence of the American people.

Does the United States need revelations about national danger from this hireling, himself a national danger. Fritz Kuhn is an avowed propagandist; he has openly stated that the reason he uses the Hitler salute in his German -American camps is that this salute will some day become the salute of the nation; his anti-Jewish campaign is part of his subservience to Hitler. Have the Jews camps in this nation, where children are drilled where a foreign flag flies over foreign ideas, where anti-democratic plans are fostered, where allegiance to a foreign power is inclucated? There should be a law prohibiting and punishing general utterances against an entire people. Such a law would not be an abrogation of free speech. David de Sola Pool, rabbi of the Spanish and Fortug'uese Synagogue in New York, died at his home in Hove at the age of 81.
