MT Pg B4 Red Black B4 THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 2002 THE MONTCLAIR TIMES www.montclairtimes com ARTS ENTERTAINMENT Kevin Jones Brings The Rhythms Of The African Diaspora To Montclair Wednesday, April 10. fa An evening of jazz, inspired by the rhythms of the African Diaspora, will be presented on Thursday, April 4, from 8 p.m. to midnight, when Kevin Jones and the Tenth World perform at Trumpets Jazz Club and Restaurant, located at 6 Depot Square. Featured in the band will be "Bujo" Kevin Jones on conga and percussion, Kelvin Sholar on piano and keyboards, Brian Horton on saxophones and flute, Jaimeo Brown on drums and percussion, George Mak-into on flute and percussion, and Wayne Batchelor on bass. Percussionist Jones attended the University of Massachusetts where he met Professor Archie Shepp. The professor encouraged Kevin's musical aspirations and eventually hired him as a percussionist in his band, and recorded Archie Shepp live at the Palais de Glace. Jones also recorded the same year with alto saxophone legend Charles McPher-son, an album titled "Free Bop." He then went on to tour with legends, The Isley Brothers, a professional relationship that lasted for 1 3 years. In addition, he also toured with singer Whitney Houston.

Jones has continued to stick close to his roots of jazz and traditional African music by playing with artists such as Talib Kibwe, Winard Harper, Babatunde Lea, James Wei-dman and Clifford Adams. He can still be found playing traditional African music with the Malaki Ma Congo Drum and Dance Ensemble. Jones recently recorded his own project, "Land of Eternal Tranquil Light," featuring drummer Marvin "Bugalu" Smith, saxophonist Talib Kibwe, pianist Kelvin Sholar, and percussionist Djobi Irie Simon, a recording expressing his commitment to peace and an expression of his untiring faith. Rounding out the week at Trumpets will be Dave Lieman on Friday, April the T.K. Blue Quintet on Saturday, April Richie Cole's Alto Madness Orchestra on Sunday, April John Carlini headlining the Tuesday Night Guitar Series on Tuesday, April and Gary Morgan and PanAmericana, a Latin Big Band, on KEVIN JONES "THE CAT'S MEOW," a Lions Gate Films release, starring Kirsten Durst and Eddie Izzard, kicks off the Spring 2002 Festival of the New Jersey Film Series on Monday, April 1, at 7 p.m., at the General Cinemas theater, in the Clifton Commons shopping mall on Route 3 East in Clifton.

The preview screening will be followed by a live discussion with director Peter Bogdanovich, hosted by film critic Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine. Carrie Jackson Her Trio Liven The Scene At Trumpets Jazz vocalist Carrie Jackson and her Jazzin' All-Stars will liven the scene on Saturday, March 30, with sets at 8:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m., and midnight, at Trumpets Jazz Club Studio Montclair Seeks Entries For 5th Annual Juried Exhibition Studio Montclair is calling for entries for its Fifth Annual Juried Exhibition, whose theme is "After the Seed is Sown." Entry deadline is April 5. The show is open to SMI members only and will be held July 1 through Aug. 27, at the Interchurch Center, 475 Riverside Drive in New York City.

The exhibit will be juried by the gallery director, Dorothy Cochran, and is open to all mediums except video and installation. "After the Seed is Sown" is Studio Montclair's first exhibition to be held in New York City. An opening reception will be held on July 2, from 4 to 8:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Midday Movies Screen The Lady April 4 "The Lady Eve" (1941), starring Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda, will be shown as part of Midday Movies 2002, on Thursday, April 4, at 1 p.m., in the auditorium of the Montclair Public Library, 50 S. Carrie Jackson has been hailed as a diva for her performance in "Ain't Misbehavin'" at the Villagers Theater in Somerset, and in "49th Street Jazz" in New York City, a musical review tribute to Eubie Blake, Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday, which featured selections from "Sophisticated Ladies," "Black Blue," and "Porgy and Bess." Jackson is president and chief executive officer of her own independent record label, C-Jay Records and Production. Her debut CD release titled "The Nearness of You" was a collaboration with Montclair musician and band leader Cecil Brooks III.
