1953, by JTA.) Why So Few Jewish Women in American Sports? The question has been raised from time to time bv sports fans, but there haven't been attempts to draw any definite conclusions. It is a fact that there are not many Jewish women taking part in major athletics in the United States. Cyn you name any? Perhaps there have been some in past years, but a search through the record books does not list them. In one column JTA reported the accomplishments of Betty Cohen the swimming grandmother from Brooklyn. Mrs.

Cohen, who has been swimming just about all of her life, became an international sports figure through her swimming exhibitions in Europe, Canada and the United States. For example, Bobbie Fischer of New York is an up-and-coming swimmer who took part in the first Maccabiah and probably will participate again this fall. But in general there is a marked lack of Jewish women in sports.

To find the reason, the question of Jewish women cannot be examined alone. Their situation is part of a general situation that raphy that he is a descendant of Rabbi Akiba Eger. The book mentions this fact only incidentally. Dr. Weiner is better known as one of the most famous child prodigies.

When he was ten years old, he was delivering lectures on higher mathematics. His father. Dr. Leo Weiner, was a professor at Harvard. Among the other things his father did was to write a history of Yiddish literature.

I am old enough to remember the days when Dr. Weiner was a boy prodigy. At the time he was not the only Jewish boy so featured. There was also another youngster, William James Sidis, son of Prof. Boris Sidis, who was hailed in the newspapers for similar precocious achievement.

Many vears later I met Sidis. He had exists for all American women I'lNCHAS LA VON. Israel Government Cabinet Minister, and one of the new republic's most dynamic statesmen, will arrive in the United States May 1 to begin a nationwide speaking tour in behalf of the State of Israel Independence Bond Issue. Mr. La von, whose tour will take him to major American cities from coast to coast, has achieved fame in Europe and in the Middle East both as an informed government official and as a progressive agriculturist and soil conservation expert.

An organizer of several farm settlements in Israel, he has been for more than twenty years one of the foremost figures in the Jewish community of Palestine. with respect to athletics. And that is: Men have a much greater opportunity to take part in sports than women. But, someone always argues. men should have more opportun Machines that think and Rabbi Akiba Eger! They are the new thing.

Newer than three dimensional films. We saw a demonstration of them last election night. The machine was "fed" certain data and asked to predict whether Eisenhower or Stevenson would win. Some day. maybe the President instead of having a Cabinet, will just have one of those machines to advise him.

Perhaps when we go to temple or church, we will hear a sermon by machine. Could a machine think up a better sermon than Rabbi Akiba Eger? Whv do I happen to mention Rabbi Akiba Eger? He was a rabbi of Prague a distinguished rabbi who lived about a hundred years ago. The first time I ever heard mention of Rabbi Akiba Eger was in an anecdote about the rabbi who succeeded him at Prague. The story ran that this rabbi was a man of many striking qualifications, "that he was like God, 'ike Moses and like Rabbi Akiba Eger." "He is like God. because he is no man.

He is like Moses, because he has an impediment of sneech as Moses had, and he is 'ike Akiba Eger, because just as Rabbi Akiba Eger couldn't speak ity, at least in the heavier sports. He resented all the studying and dis Learning Thrift is Part of a Good Education Jewish law a usurer will not par ticipate in the resurrection. He, therefore, will occupy the ground ciplining imposed by his father in In many foreign countries, this attitude does not prevail. In Israel, for example, women play a major role in athletics.

There are Olga Wittenberg, the discus star; Raya Bronstein, who excels in the shot put: Tamar Metal, in the women's broad jump; Lea Hur-witz, who does the 180-meter hurdles. At the Olympics in Helsinki last summer the majority of Israel's track and field team were women. Also at the Olympics, Llona Elek, Hungary's famous fencer gave an outstanding performance. Tamara Tyshkevich was on Russia's winning gymnastic team. In many other nations women athletes are developing at a rapid pace and the old idea that certain sports are not for women is rapidly being pushed aside.

That is why the U. S. Olympic team was so handicapped in the women's events. Does a major Olympic official suggest that women athletes get more of an opportunity? To the contrary. Avery Brundage, chairman of the International Olympic Committee, proposes that women's events be withdrawn from the Olympics and that women have separate Olympic competition.

This is like the little boy who is losing and wants to pick up his marbles and go home. The performances of some of the women athletes who did participate at Helsinki show that America has a wonderful potential for developing some of the best sports women in the world. When a s'rong effort is made in this direction, many Jewish women will be numbered among the successful. SPORTS BRIEFS: There are plans to build a permanent Maccabiah village in Israel to house the competitors who converge on Israel every three years for the Maccabiah games. The corner stone for such a venture may be laid this fall after the upcoming Maccabiah competition.

The site for all time, so we must charge him more." The other story about Rabbi Akiba Eger that I would like to tell is the night a poor widow came to him crying that she was Gestapo Officer Goes on Trial in Germany FRANKFURT (JTA) Former Gestapo Lieutenant Fritz Hildebrandt went on trial in Bremen on charges of being responsible for the murder of thousands of Jews at several concentration camps he headed in Poland anrl the Carpathians. I recall two other stories which I think are worth retelling. One was about a mean and stingy Jew of Prague. He had made a fortune by usurious interest and had never contributed to the Jewish community's charities.

The community, on his death, demanded more for his burial plot and the family of this mean jew Deposit other rabbi mv first ac-Rabbi Akiba German, so this couldn't." That story was nuaintance with Corporation 625 N. Water St. Just south of Wis. Ave to be evicted the following day for non-payment of rent. ftabbi Akiba Eger went clown to the Kehilla offices, but none of the leading Jews were there.

He thought he would try the Sports Club and there, sure enough, he found all the leaders playing cards. When they saw the rabbi thev stopped playing. "Hold," said Rabbi Eger, "the game must go on but the proceeds I will take to pay the rent of the poor widow who is threatened with eviction tomorrow." What I would like to say to Dr. Norbert Weiner, master of the science of thinking machines, is, "Doctor, you can create machines that think machines that have brains but can you create a machine that has a heart that will be moved by the plight of a poor widow?
