THE WISCONSIN JEWISH CHRONICLE 9 December 10, 1937 No "Shirt' Movements In America, He Says New York (JTA) "No shirts, A whatever color, endanger you," Emil Ludwig, noted biographer, declared last week in a speech at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel during a dinner marking the publication of the first installment of his biography of President Roosevelt. Stores Open Every Evening Until Christmas Jewish Youth Council Appoints Chairmen For Interclub Activities Alan Shafrin, Director of Main Service Division, Names Smith, Davis, Gross, Peckarsky and Weinstein as Assistants Five chairmen to assist Alan Shafrin, Director of Interclub activities, were appointed at the last meeting of the Jewish Youth Council of Milwaukee, held at the Jewish Center Nov. 23. They will function in the division most closely connected to the groups who are member organizations of the Council.

Hy Smith of Alpha Kappa Tau, Milwaukee State Teachers college fraternity, was named chairman of the athletic committee. He will arrange a program of competitive and recreational sports for both masculine and feminine groups. Basketball and volleyball are expected to be the first sports on the program. Herschel Davis of the Young Men's Hebrew association was appointed chairman of the forensic committee. He and his associates will co-operate with George Laiken, representing the Jewish Center, in sponsoring the Council's forensic program.

Fear Forensic Duplication Quite a bit of discussion arose at the meeting when the tentative forensic plans were announced. It was feared, by members of Omicron Alpha Tau and the Philomathians, that the program would conflict with the extemporaneous speaking contests held annually by these two groups. It was suggested that they confer with the forensic committee so that no conflict would arise. Neal Gross of SBYA was chosen to take charge of the speakers' bureau. He will supply member organizations with speakers for their regular and special meetings.

Material gathered by Carl Kozlow, now viae president during his term as inter-club director has been turned over to Gross. Charles Peckarsky of BHD will be in charge of exchange programs. He will keep in touch with the program chairmen of member organizations and will notify the Council of available interesting programs which can be presented by groups within member organizations. Other organizations will then be able to "borrow" these programs for their own meetings. Announce Bulletin Writers George Weinstein of Alpha Epsilon yyf Emil Ludwig Mayor LaGuardia, referring to Dr.

Ludwig's remark that no "shirt" movement menaced America, expressed the hope that "many people will read this." Dr. Ludwig, who was born in Germany and whose books are now banned there, said that President Roosevelt's Chicago speech threatening dictators made "a deep impression on the German people becauss of German fear for American troops and money is increased to a panic, since they feel that in the last war the U. S. decided their fate." The author ridiculed the charge that President Roosevelt sought to be a dictator, declaring that "Roosevelt's development and his character are both opposed to dictatorship." 4 A- i s' UK EAGLES Wm. But the group desiring to prolong the war was powerful, and aided by a sudden movement of dissention within the very ranks of the pacifists, their bitter opposition gained following until it succeeded once more in bringing disappointment and immedicable disaster to a universal hope. The voyage of the peace ship was a failure.

With accusations flung at her by enemies of her peace plan charges that she was a selfish adventuress, a swindler and a German spy Rozika Schwimmer returned home, defeated but not conquered. Escaped to Exile It was a few months before the end of the war. Mme. Schwimmer played a leading part in the bloodless coup which overthrew Emperor Karl and made her friend, Count Michael Karol-yi, president. Her appointment as Hungarian minister to Switzerland made Rozika Schwimmer the first woman envoy in history which post she retained until Karolyi was ousted by the Communist putsch.

When the Communist regime, however, was displaced by the white terror, Mme. Schwimmer, smuggled on a Danube boat, had to flee to Vienna in order to escape the fate of other Jews, socialists and pacifists who had been killed by the thousands. Ill and impoverished, she accepted the invitation of American friends and came to the United States in 1921. Once again assailed as a Bolshevik agent and an adventuress who had duped Henry Ford, advocates of militarism sought by every means possible to prevent her making a living by lecturing and writing. Enemies knew and feared her power.

Clubs and organizations were secretly warned against her. Editors rejected her articles. In exile from her native Hungary, and denied citizenship in the United States in 1929 because she refused to take the oath to bear arms for her country, Rozika Schwimmer is today a woman without a country. Burden on America They could stop her from publishing and lecturing and earning a living they could successfully conduct their campaign so that no land might be her home but they could not stop her from thinking planning hoping still. "Find $1,000,000," she says (Tommy Manville, Doris Duke, Barbara Hutton could become saviours of the world with just a little of what they have, she notes), "draft adventure-loving youth to disseminate the new plan in countries which refuse to participate; arrange for citizens' committees in such countries as Germany and Italy to escort the dictators to the best insane asylums "I'd be willing to administer plans for the conference," says Rozika Schwimmer on her sixtieth birthday, "and I could have it under way within a year if I could only get the money.

It's very plain the peace burden rests on America." (Copyright, 1937, by Seven Arts Feature Syndicate.) controlled by any rival power, he said. The route, he said, is strategically secure, even against air attack. Building it under her own auspices, Britain would not be subject to any outside restrictions such as those which require her to keep Suez open even to ships of a nation with which she is at odds. Held Commercially Practicable High as the cost of construction would be, Dr. Werber estimated that even if only the British traffic now using the Suez Canal were diverted to the Haifa-Akaba route, it would be a commercially-practicable investment, apart from its strategic value.

Furthermore, he pointed out, the canal would bring prosperity not only Palestine but to the neighboring countries, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Trans-jordan and Saudi Arabia. The importance of the Iraq Petroleum Company's pipeline would be enhanced, and the Palestine Potash Company's works on the shore of the Dead Sea would enjoy enormously improved transportation, he said. The construction job itself, Dr. Werber said, would give employment to thousands for 10 years, while thousands would have permanent employment in maintenance and in the trades and industries which would spring up under its influence. j- 6 FOUR STAR single blankets, with a 5 year guarantee against moths.
