In that flaming atrocity against culture, Hitler and his Satanic imps ended the history of Germany as a world power, and reduced this once-great nation to the status of a medieval tribal state. What Hitler did to Germany will not be undone for a hundred years.

After four hundred years, Spain, once a greater world power than Germany ever was, is still striving to atone for much the same sort of national self-destruction committed by Torquemada, the Hitler of his day, who staged a similar auto da fe. "Jewish intellectualism is screeched Dr. Paul Jos. Goebbels, Nazi chieftain, as the flames mounted high over the funeral pyre. "Stand back!" shouted one King Canute to the tides of the oceanl But the tides kept rolling in.

Jewish intellectualism dead! Poor deluded Nazi maniac! As well try to kill the rays of the sun. Jewish intellectualism emerged from that book burning in Germany stronger than ever, and it will grow from strength to strength as long as there is tyranny, oppression, ignorance, hatred and bigotry in any part of the world. What died in those flames wTas not Jewish intellectualism, but German honor. What died in those flames was the sympathy of the civilized world for the German nation. But the world still retains its sympathy for the German people themselves.

It was not the German people who sang the songs of Heine and of Mendelssohn; it was only maniacs disguised in German form. The German people will awake some day and destroy the Nazi cancer that has polluted its soul, but not until then will the world forget that an ungrateful Germany burned the books of its greatest sons, and became a menace to world peace and world progress. Germany will pay for this mad orgy of human hatred. Hitlerism may kill Jews and others, and burn and destroy all the books and all the laws of common humanity, but there is one law that Hitlerism will have to answer to, and that is the Law of Compensations. That law is inexorable and relentless.

It will exact payment and penalty from Germany for its senseless folly in tolerating so despicable a movement back to savagery. May 10th, 1933, is a sad date in German history. Looking Backward I picked up an old German newspaper the other day. Very old, going back to the Middle Ages. To be exact, the paper was dated 1510.

For a while, despite the fact that the paper seemed almost mouldy and crumbling away, I thought it was a modern newspaper. In fact, for a while I couldn't escape the impression that it was the Beobachter or one of the other Nazi newspapers. For it had articles about burning Jewish books. You will understand better this impression, if you read some of the items which I have roughly translated, as follows: Burning the Talmud Franfurt. January.

There is much agitation in the country about the proposal to burn Jewish books, particularly the Talmud. The Dominicans are in the lead of the movement. The priests contend that the Talmud contains many blasphemies against Christianity, and that it is the perusal of the Talmud which is mainly responsible for the piggish resistance of the Jews to conversion to Christianity. The Dominicans are making headway in their movement to burn the Talmud. They are also urging that the Hebrew Old Testament be thrown into the flames, inasmuch as the Latin Vulgate which is supposedly a translation of the Hebrew Old Testament, seems to differ with it in certain re And yet they say that fathers do not understand their children. Guido Jung Italy has sent a Jewish emissary to confer with Roosevelt. England sent MacDonald, France sent Herriot, and Italy sent the Jew, Jahuda or Guido Jung, the son by the way of German parents. Some Jewish newspapers on the continent remarked on the fact that when Hitler's lieutenant, Goering flew to see Mussolini, that Mussolini turned him over to Guido Jung.

And they read in this Mussolini attempting indirectly to teach the German Fascist leader a little lesson in tolerance. A Hidden Motive? This may or may not be true. The most plausible interpretation is of course that Mussolini was not endeavoring to preach any tolerance, but it just happens that Guido Jung is Mussolini's Minister of Finance, and consequently, Goering would have to see him. Nevertheless, it must have been a lesson in tolerance to Goering anyway. And how the German Fascist must have choked to have to deal with an Italian Jew of German parentage.

Nor can the Hitlerist government, derive much pleasure from the fact that Italy, from which Hitler took his lessons in Fascism, sent a Jew as its emissary to the United States. Hitler has been damning the Communists because their leader, Marx, was a Jew. And how must it gall him, when even the motherland of Fascism regards a Jew as an outstanding leader. That is, it would gall him, if there were logic in these Hitlerists, but I fear me, they are not troubled with an overdose of that commodity. They are much better at marching with steel helmets.

German Films With one exception, all of the picture houses showing German films in New York have had to close down, as the result of the Nazi disturbances. The New York public boycott has certainly been effective as far as these German films are concerned. But more striking to me than the mere fact of this, is its implication. What I mean is that there is New York, with its hundreds of thousands of German non-Jews, yet apparently the German films have depended for their support on Jews. There is much meat for thought in that fact meat that would have made any German government with five or six atoms of gray matter, act differently than it has.

Every Jew Should Be A Member of Mount Sinai Hospital On Monday, several hundred men and women of the community will begin the work of soliciting all persons in the city for membership in Mt. Sinai Hospital. This drive merits the support of every Jew in Milwaukee for Mt. Sinai Hospital is the Jewish contribution to the health and welfare of the city. We strongly urge every Jewish family to take out one or more memberships, and thereby assist in the carrying on of the work of this essential institution.

This drive is different than the usual philanthropic appeal in that it offers the giver much more in value than the amount of the gift. The hospital has a strong enough appeal for individual support without offering anything in return, but in this instance a person who becomes a member at a nominal fee receives in return the privilege of twenty-one days of hospital service without charge if and when he or she needs it during the year. Thus the drive has reciprocal advantages. The money raised through the memberships will keep the hospital functioning, and the members will be secure in the knowledge that if they require hospitalization they will receive it at little or no cost at all. It is one method of reducing the high cost of hospital care for the patient, which in these days of stress is an intolerable burden to the families that suffer illness or injury.

That Mt. Sinai Hospital must have more money than it receives from fees and from the Federated Jewish Charities needs no detailed recital. No hospital is self-supporting. It cannot be run like a merchandising business. It must give service at all times and must maintain its equipment and personnel at top efficiency to give that service to all who require it.

Illness and accident unforunately does not wait for depression to pass. The hospital cannot stop to bargain with a person who is carried there with a skull fracture or an acute attack of appendicitis. It cannot stop to ask the patient if he is rich or poor. The hospital is in the business of saving human life, and it is not a paying business, and never was, and can't be. We need Mt.

Sinai Hospital as much as we need homes to live in. It must be supported. It can't close down. It can't go to the city, county, state or federal government for support. It is forced to depend upon private donations.

We must supply the necessary funds, or do without the hospital. This is unthinkable, however, in a civilized society. The hospital is our first line trench against disease and death, not only for the individual victim but also for the entire community. We should be willing to pay for the maintenance of the hospital, not because we may need to go there, but more so because we may never have to go there. The membership drive gives us a very simple and easy opportunity to fulfill our obligations to Mt.

Sinai Hospital. We urge every Jew to become a member and help obtain other members. j. spects. The Jews are very much concerned, and have petitioned the Emperor.

The latest report is that the Emperor has referred the matter of burning the Talmud to a committee of scholars headed by the sainted scholar Johann Reuchlin. Public Opinion Flames Frankfort. March The fury New Berlin Directory a Jewish Blacklist The Boycott on German Goods German Hitlerism replied to the world protest against its assault upon the Jews and liberal elements by instituting the most ruthless economic boycott any nation ever inflicted upon any part of its own people. It has set out to destroy and has succeeded in destroying the economic existence of her 600,000 professing Jews, and of another two million or more German citizens with Jewish blood in their veins to the fourth generation. The record of its "schroechlichkeit" in robbing the Jews of their means of livelihood is well known by now.

The civilized wrorld stood aghast at this national banditry as "retaliation" for its protest, and being a realistic world that has not yet learned the sublime lessons of passive resistance, it proceeded to add action to its sentiments of horror by refusing to buy goods made in Germany. It answered the German boycott against the Jews by a counter-boycott against Germany. And although this boycott was not organized, it just spontaneously developed throughout the world, and has become so powerful and effective that it has already caused a reduction in German export of various items from 20 to 50 per cent. The German fur trade is just about completely ruined. The dye industry, textile industry, shipping industry, have been shaken to their very foundations.

The economic life of Germany is seriously damaged. Whether this loss, in an already impoverished nation will cause its people to take note of what the outside world thinks of its new rulers is hard to say. The German people have developed an inexplicable callousness to intense suffering, which Hitler attempts to exalt euphonically as An attempt is now being made to organize this world boycott under Jewish leadership. A movement of this sort has begun in New York, and further complicates the disunity of American Jewry on the German situation. Dr.

Cyrus Adler as head of the American Jewish Committee and Rabbi Stephen S. Wise as head of the American Jewish Congress opposed to each other on the matter of mass demonstrations, have both expressed opposition to the Jewish boycott. Nothing in the world can prevent a Jew from refusing to buy goods he knows were made in Germany, and Jewish concerns that refuse to import German merchandise need no justification for their action. They have a right to buy or not to buy where they please. But the movement to make the world boycott a "Jewish" boycott opens up some very important considerations.

The war against Hitlerism is not a Jewish war. Dorothy Thompson, wife of Sinclair Lewis, probably the ablest reporter on the Hitler situation, advises the Jews "not to set themselves apart from the rest of us" in combatting the Nazi menace. "I think what is happening in Germany is a revolt against culture, against civilization itself, and that it affects Jews in the first line is one thing. But it affects everybody." The boycott, under any circumstances, is a dangerous weapon. It is double-edged.

It often does as much harm to the perpetrator as to the victim. The Jew ought to be very cautious about using it in organized fashion, for it is this very weapon of boycott that is used so disastrously against the Jew, not only in Germany, but in Poland, Roumania, Hungary, and other countries. There is the danger that anti-Semitic elements in this and other countries may be stimulated to use it against Jewish business firms here. The Jew alone need not take the responsibility for the German boycott. If such a weapon be the only effective means to combat Hitlerism, it ought to be sponsored universally by non-Jews as well who oppose the Nazi terror.

Here is another occasion where only one element of Jewish leaders adopt a course of action without consultation with other Jewish leaders. On a matter so delicate as this there ought to be unquestioned Jewish unity, and if there be no such unity, it might just as well not be done at all. Here again it is quite difficult for local Jewish communities to decide what is the right and proper course to pursue, regardless of how many "millions of Jews" each faction claims to Innsbruck. J.T.A.) A blacklist of Jewish business concerns, shop3 and doctors has been carefully compiled and distributed to the population of Berlin with an urgent request that citizens of the city boycott all mentioned on the list. The new blacklist resembles a city directory and shows that a special staff has been engaged in preparing and checking the data included in the directory.

The directory is divided into sections in accordance with the districts and streets of the city. Non-Jewish residents of each street are receiving from an anonymous source, the part of the book concerning their neighborhood in order that they may avoid Jewish concerns and professional men whom the directory lists. George W. Patek The death of George W. Patek robs the Milwaukee Jewish community of another of its outstanding personalities who played so active a part in our congregational, philanthropic, and social life.

The loss of such men at any time is sad, but in times like these their loss is irreparable, for there seems to be no immediate prospect of younger men ready, able and willing to take the places they so adequately filled. George Patek was of that type of communal worker who did more than his duty for Jewish causes without assuming any ofiice of leadership. And yet he wTas a leader, for rarely was there a drive or a project of any substantial merit undertaken without his counsel and encouragement. Everything he did was done in good wholesome generous spirit. He was one of the largest givers in money, and one of the largest givers of his time.

He could always be depended upon to work and get others to give, and when he promised to do a job, he did it. The Federated Jewish Charities, Mt. Sinai Hospital, the synagogues, the children's camp, the Home for Aged Jews, the drives for foreign relief and for Palestine, all were recipients of his bounty. But he did not stop with the established ano organized philanthropies. George Patek delighted in helping persons in distress, young people who craved a start in life, and others whose peculiar difficulties did not come within the purpose of institutional relief.

The highest tribute we can pay to George Patek as a personality is that he was a gentleman. He loved life and loved to share its enjoyment with his friends. There was nothing small or petty about him. His heart was big. Trustworthy, loyal, sincere, kindly, considerate, generous, George Patek lived a successful useful life, and the regret at his passing is genuine.

The community has lost a good Jew, a good friend, and a good citizen. Olav Ha-Sholom. Jews Boom Palestine Commerce Report States Washington. (J.T.A.) A wave of prosperity in Palestine, exceeding that of the pre-depression days, is reported by the United States Department of Commerce. Factories are working at full capacity to meet the increased demands for domestic products, the department said, "and the demand for labor in the building trades and agriculture is growing daily.

The steady immigration of Jews from other countries is believed largely responsible for the upturn." aroused by the proposal to burn the Talmud has set all Germany aflame. Indeed, sparks of flame have spread throughout Europe. The latest development is that Reuchlin, to whom the Emperor referred the matter of burning the Talmud for decision, has advised against it. He suggested instead that courses in Hebrew be instituted in all of the German universities. The Dominicans are choking with rage at Reuchlin's decision, and they have published a most scandalous pamphlet attacking the noble and scholarly Reuchlin.

Pamphlets pro and con have followed in great profusion. As the result, the Church as a whole has come in for severe attack. One of those joining in the assault against the Church is a fiery young churchman named Martin Luther. What he hasn't said against the church isn't much. Church Is Split Frankfort.

April. The fight against the Church, which originated as the result of the proposal for the burning of Talmud has split all Christendom in two camps; Catholics and Protestants or Lutherans. The flames which were intended for the the Talmud Torah have burned an irreparable hole in the Church instead. It's History Such are the strange items, which I read. But I must admit that I was mistaken in saying that I read them in a German paper.

I was mistaken, for to be sure, there was no newspaper published in Frankfort at that date. Nevertheless the facts stated are authentic and you may read them in any good history of the Middle Ages. And if you want to read a a rather good account of the matter, turn to Graetz's History of the Jews. Volume IV. Gave Birth to Protestantism Nothing less than the Protestant Reformation came about through the proposed burning of Jewish books in 1510.

As we survey the scene today, we are apt to say oh, nothing will come out of this burning of Jewish books today, but some ballyhoo speeches by Herr Goebel and some smoke. But the Jews in 1510 at the beginning of the burning project then probably thought the same thing. We shall probably not know what will come of all this until say about 50 years hence. For the mills of the Gods grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine. Osser Apropos of the difficulties Jews in Germany are having in informing their friends of true conditions there, I heard what purported to be a true account of how one German Jew corresponded with American relatives.

After the Nazi outbreak, this German Jew, whose first name is Sig-mund wrote to his Uncle in the States, something to this effect. "Everything is fine here. There are no troubles. The Nazis are very decent. In fact, they came into our house, and treated us like the good German gentlemen they are.

There was no interference, too, with the business of Uncle Fritz. And our cousin Professor Samuels has not been interfered with at all. Signed: Sigmund Osser. For the benefit of some, it should be said that the word "Osser" is a Hebrew idiom conveying something of the meaning of "Oh, Yeah" except that it is a little more violent. A Wise Father A correspondent of the New York Evening Post writing the biography of Herr Hitler, remarks that Hitler's father was convinced that Adolf was a good for nothing and would always be a good for nothing.

Newark's Mayor a Jew, First Time in 247 Years Newark, N. J. (J.T.A.) For the first time in the 247 years since this city was settled, a Jewish citizen will he its mayor. Dr. Meyer C.

Ellen-stein, re-elected to the City Commission this week by the highest vote ever received by a candidate and the only member of the Commission to be re-elected, will be named as mayor when the new commission meets. Dr. Ellenstein, whose early lifetime was spent in Paterson, ia identified with more than 30 fraternal and charitable groups and is active in Jewish affairs. He is a member of the board of trustees of Temple B'nai Abraham and treasurer of the Hebrew Orphans' Sheltering Home. CALENDAR OF EVENTS 4 Germany Burned Books and Its Honor They burned books in Germany last week.

Books containing priceless treasures of literature, religion, economics, government, medicine, music, and all the arts and sciences. Books of Heine, Einstein, Schnitzler, Mendelssohn, Meyerbeer, Freud, Harden, Marx, La Salle, Munsterburg, Mann, Ehrlich, Boerne, Ludwig, Oppenheimer, Wasserman, Werfel, Toller, Wolff, Lieberman, Feuchtwanger, Zweig, Herzl, and many more. Books that just about cover the whole of what decent and sane Germans were so proud to call German culture or kultur. And books, not only by German Jews, but also German Christians with any love for liberal thought and hatred against war and ignorance and bigotry. They burned books by Helen Keller, the American blind genius, beloved throughout the world by people of heart and soul.

They burned the book "All Quiet on the Western Front," by Remarque, a Christian German, just because it depicted the horrors of war. They burned books in this new Nazi Germany to destroy the best in human thought developed over a period of centuries. And who did the Nazi leaders get to apply the torch to the books? No, not the criminals or ignorant hoodlums. They got the students of the universities to do the burning! The German universities sponsored the burning! The great universities of Germany, of Heidelberg, Leipzig, Munich, Frankfort, and the other once-leading institutions of learning and scholarship, renowned and honored in the world of education. The students of Germany set fire to the books of Germany And in the flames that destroyed those priceless books, there was also destroyed that which is still more priceless to Germany its good name, its honor, the respect of the entire world for a once-mighty nation.

The Nazi bigots cannot now complain of "atrocity They openly, exultantly, maliciously, fiendishly committed the most horrible atrocity in modern history.
