September 29, 1967 THE WISCONSIN JEWISH CHRONICLE Expowrit: Misa MaM By Jean R. Herschaft May the NEW YEAR 5728 bring greater hope and courage in facing life's problems! YOU COULD CALL her Israel's most sizzling export-on-loan-to the USA: Miss Aliza Kashi of Tel Aviv. The bewitching brunette with a soft fire in her voice and a shining flame in her eyes captured our nation's favor in many ways but superchargedly via Television. The Merv Griffith Show was her market place. Fan mail after her appearances was so staggering that Aliza broke every guest record by appearing more than 52 times in a year's scheduling run of the 5 night weekly series.

Ed Sullivan's Show wooed her his way too, and all of a sudden, Tov-Tov-Tov-, Aliza found herself Israel's hotest export, winning admirers across the map with her earthy chatter as well as vocal gold. "Although I have sung almost all over the world," the brown-eyed sabra doll told us, "I began Edward M. LcVinc Iiert C. Hruudc "Western" on location in New Mexico. Peter Falk currently on the screen in "Luv," now is in Italy co-starring in DeLaurentiis epic "Anzio." FEW FILMS THIS SEASON deal with Jewish themes except perhaps the above-mentioned Schisgal comedy.

A couple of pictures may revoke the spectrum of anti-Semitism such as "Oliver" currently shooting in England in which, we hope, the character of Fagin is streamlined to reduce the feeling of uneasiness. John Woolf of Romulus is producing; Sir Carol Reed, a great craftsman, directs. Joseph Strick's production of James Joyce's "Ulysses" has caused a great deal of comment in town. However, the Irish character of the past who is objectionable to many, is not a specific Jewish one. "Ulysses" doesn't revoke anti-Semitism, but rather is meant to combat its evil.

Throughout all the tensions of the past three months, Hollywood did not stop production for a moment, though many Hollywood-ians went to their banks to cash their stocks, bonds and savings accounts in order to secure their own future through an investment in Israel and democracy. THE Hollywood (Continued from pace 6) the State of Israel seemingly on the opposite fence A GREAT NUMBER OF Jewish personalities are currently working in the studios of Hollywood: Mike Nichols and Lawrence Tur-man are completing for Embassy Pictures, "The Graduate," in which Dustin Hoffman, a Jewish boy from New York, plays the title role. Sam Jaffee is working for M-G-M on "Guns of San Sebastian," with Frenchman Jacques Bar as producer; Laurence Harvey is in "Ice Station Zebra" for Martin Ransohoff James Booth in "The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom" for Paramount; Israeli starlet Sara Vardi is in Judd Bernard's "Blue" now on Western location; Michael Caine is in 20th Century-Fox "Deadfall" under Bryan Forbes' direction now on location in Spain! Alan Arkin is in Switzerland portraying the title role of "Inspector Clouseau" for Lewis Bachmil of the Mirisch Company; Frank Tashlin directs Bob Hope in "The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Fatrell" in Puerto Rico; Norman Jewison is in Boston for the Mirisch Bros, completing "The Crown Caper" with Steve McQueen; Kirk Douglas has finished "A Lovely Way to Die" on the streets of New York with Richard Lewis as his producer and David Lowell Rich as director.

Douglas now is going to Sicily to do on location "The Brotherhood," a modern story of the Mafia to be directed by Martin Ritt in cooperation with the star's own Bryna production. Warner's have completed "Camelot" and now are finishing principal photography on "Finian's Rainbow," with Joseph Landon producing and Francis Ford Coppola directing Fred Astaire, Petula Clark and Keenen Wynn. Ted Post is guiding for producer Leonard Freeman "Hang 'Em High," the Clint Eastwood Broude-LeVine AGENCY, INC "Everything in Insurance MADISON BUILDING 623 N. (1 Mile North of Capitol Drive) to become liked no the word is 'accepted' here, only a year ago when that great funny man Jack Benny discovered me." BENNY BOOKED HER to tour with him in "An Hour 60 Minutes with Jack Benny." That hour multiplied to hundreds of successful hours. Ceaesar's Palace Hotel in Las Vegas proved the goldmine discovery for her talent when producers of TV spied her in the Benny showcase. We met the dynamic lady backstage of Town Hall directly after her first starring Concert debut this past summer in New York City. Miss Kashi delivered a scoring performance to a sold-out theater. Israeli numbers were woven in and out of her program that she delivered in 5 delicious languages in addition to Hebrew and English: Japanese, Italian, Spanish, Arabic and Yiddish.

Another specialty of the Kashi house was translating American standards into these various languages. That night, "Bill Bailey Will You Please Come Home" tore down the house as she wailed it in Yiddish. ALL OF HER SHOW, though, led the New York Times music critic to report the following day "ISRAELI SINGER VANQUISHES THE HEAT TOWN HALL!" The place was not air-conditioned, but no one in the 90 degrees plus heat was bothered as they drank in her liquid tones and kept clamoring for more, more and more, particularly native ones as Hava Nagila. "You like me! I am so glad!" she pouted after every applause. But she did more than just accept the adoration.

Aliza went down into the darkened hall to the audience, singing up and down the aisles, directly to the audience. "I like you too, people!" she sang out on her enthusiastic rounds. She has the magical power of a Judy Garland and the same winning glory but it is stamped specifically, Kashi and exclusively Israeli in appeal. In more somber moments, she told the audience that her brother and her sister were both serving in Israel's army. And that her heart is in Israel too, with her people.

"BUT I HOPE THAT Americans will see a little bit of my country, in me, and if they do, this is all the success I want," she told me privately, later. It was much, much later, though, following her concert. For Aliza was mobbed by more than 300 eager fans who clamored for her and her autograph after some ten curtain calls at the close of the program. Drenched from the heat of the night and her performance, Aliza nevertheless asked her agent to invite the crowd backstage. Not only did she sign her name in large bold script but she added a drawing of a rose, her favorite flower, to each, as a special trademark.

"We love you, Aliza!" "When is your record album WE SHARE WITH ALL JEWRY THE PRIDE IN THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR BRETHREN IN ISRAEL THEIR COURAGE, THEIR VALOR, THEIR FAITH IN THE FACE OF INSURMOUNTABLE ODDS IS ANOTHER GLOWING CHAPTER IN THE HISTORY OF OUR PEOPLE. "I love you too, people!" "Next week," and "Ask Town Hall," were her tart retorts as she signed, and signed theatrebills galore which flooded her. IT MUST BE CITED here that the fans were not the usual, but rather the unusual. They were not the types one would find in fanlike hordes backstage. No teenagers were these. Most were men and women in their prime and past! Many were not Jewish.

Men and women who came to worship a veritable goddess from the Middle East. She was Miss Israel to them without benefit of official title. An earthy woman who carries a gun for her country, or carries a microphone on stage, in no special order, this is the Aliza Kashi America salutes Israel's sizzling export, on loan. We stand on the threshold of a new era in the history of our civilization. For the first time in many a decade we can see the faint but impressive outline of plans to end the tensions that endanger mankind. IN THE TRADITION of our people we can seek no greater blessing than that of "Shalom." In this season we must resolutely prepare ourselves to strive for peace and to be worthy of its fruits. IN THIS SPIRIT of hope and confidence, we look forward to a year in which our prayer of brotherhood, benevolence and harmony for all may be fully realized.
