A statement of plain stark insanity. Only a Dante who let his imagination run riot to describe hell, or a modern Hollywood screen scrib-ler who creates delirium tremens animals might possibly understand the logic of the Nazi course of destruction of every civilizing influence in German in this day and age.

We don't believe in magic or miracles or fairy tales, and no one can make us believe that the great majority of the German people can accept all this destruction of their most cherished traditions and possessions without experiencing the same feelings of revulsion that afflict the rest of the civilized world. Leaving the Jew aside for the moment, we cannot imagine any sincere and honest German Socialist or Republican changing his political philosophy by mere order of a brown-shirted Nazi or an honest German Mason trampling on the principles of his fraternal creed or a good Christian the flash of a second turning from the teachings of the Bible to the hair-raising tales of Hun mythology or an honest German labor unionist forgetting the age-long struggles of his craft or the sincere and honest German scholar shouting with savage glee as he views the burning up of books of learning. No, we can't imagine such a miraculous reversion of the human mind to abject barbarism. And we don't believe that any such thing is taking place in Germany now7 or will ever take place. The Hitlerite lunatics can destroy the books and bodies of the Jew, the Mason, the Protestant and the Catholic, the Communist, Socialist, Republican, and every other human being that does not fancy a brown shirt, but they cannot alter the human mind and memory and soul.

Hitler may have the hyptonic power to make his followers believe that he is a greater man than Moses or Jesus, but unless the whole world has gone crazy he can't do what God Himself does not attempt to do. We don't know how long Hitler and his gang will retain their hold on the prostrate throat of Germany, but we do know if he retains his hold long enough, there won't be any Germar lef to hold onto. There is such a thing as choking a victim to death. But when the victim is a nation of sixty millions of people it is inconceivable that it will be content to die without a last struggle. "7)ne of the amazing facts of the German situation is the total absence of resistence to the Nazi terror.

But resistence is inevitable, for Hitler cannot retain his power by merely giving the German people circus parades and bread on his birthday. The German people may love a parade, but Ihey cannot live long without bread everyday. The German people will discover soon enough that even burning books of learning does not produce bread. They will learn soon enough that showmanship, pageantry, hatred, and violence can destroy a nation, but cannot build a better nation. Hitlerism carries within its venomous loins the seeds of its own destruction.

We look to the German people to rise up and destroy Hitlerism before Hitlerism destroys Germany, or before the armies of France, Poland, Russia and other European nations dismember the great German Empire into the little pieces that it was in the Dark Ages. Hitlerism has already reduced Ger- many from a second rate nation to a fourth rate power in the eves of the world. have written technical books about humor, hut thev have written little of anything humorous itself. They lack intrinsically the sense of humor, speculator will dare hold it out of use. That will cheapen land, so that the settler can buy it.

Do that, and there will be no fat speculators, living in luxury, while the settler mortgages his land and the workingman starves. The Biblical Curse It seems that Palestine should be the one land to appreciate this. The Jewish National Fund's whole idea was that there should be no private appropriation of the "unearned increment." I could go back even further to the Bible which invoked a curse on the land speculator. "Cursed be he who removeth his neighbor's landmark" in other words, cursed be he who tried to get all of his neighbors to pay him rent for the land. Isaiah hundred against the land speculator: "Woe unto those who join land to land and field to field." Were Is Jabot insky? This is a good time, it seems to me, for our friends the Revisionists to get busy and "holler." They are good at hollering, and now is the time to holler.

Furthermore, how can they keep silent at this land speculation, when the single tax is definitely part of the Revisionist program. Where is Jabotinsky, who has shown that he is thoroughly acquainted with the ernicious influence of the land speculator? Where is Dr. Soskins, who has been known for his land reformist activity even in England? And where is Mrs. Fels, whose husband financed the land reform campaign of Lloyd George? The World Zionist Congress which meets this summer will have met fruitlessly if it does not take steps to meet this situation. It is a problem far more important than that of the British government more important than any Arab problem.

How can you expect settlement to take place in Palestine on any considerable sale with land selling, as Zukerman writes, at $400 an acre. Why within 50 miles of New York, this writer knows at least one ten acre tract which can be bought for a third of that sum. And this is America. The Gold Standard Returning to lighter things, they are telling an interesting story about Washington. One day Walter Lipp-man in the Herald-Tribune wrote an article calling on the Administration to abandon the gold standard.

The next day President Roosevelt was asked by newspaper correspondents in Washington why he had taken the country off the gold standard. "Read yesterday's Herald-Tribune," said the President frankly. so at least, it has been said. But this charee. I believe, is not quite true.

One can now see indeed from the article in the New Republic that the Hitlerists have an amazing sense of humor. Thus, the writer tells us that thev would take Jews, whip them until they fell to the e-round. then demand that they rise up again, and then throw them down again. And this they would do repeatedly and they would howl with delight, seeing the Jews rise and fall. So you see they do know how to laugh, too.

Those Refined Nazis Consider the spectacle in this day and age of a so-called Christian country, in which men march through the streets, as described in the Nation, singing: "Wenn das Judenblut von Messer spritzt, signed by Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the A.J.C. and Alfred M. Cohen, president of the B'nai B'rith reasserts the statement of March 20 that "Prejudice must not be fought merely with appeals to passion and resentment, however justfied passion and resentment may be." Expressing full understanding and appreciation of the human and natural desire to express feelings of sorrow and indignation entertained by the Jews of this and other countries, they say, "We nevertheless consider such forms of agitation as boycotts, parades and mass meeting and similar demonstrations as futile. They serve only as an ineffectual channel for the release of emotion.

They furnish the persecutors with a pretext to justify the wrongs they perpetrate and, on the other hand, distract those who desire to help with more constructive Whether the Jews should continue mass protest demonstrations or not is a matter of opinion. There is no central Jewish authority in this country with power to prohibit such demonstratons, but if there is to be a sharp difference of opinion between powerful Jewish bodes on the subject, whatever demonstrations are held will lose the force of Jewish unity, and expose the Jewish community in America as a "house divided against its own The Union of Orthdox Congregations, the B'rith Sholom order, and other Jewish organizations, realizing the danger of splitting the Jewish people of America into warring camps on this issue, have appealed to the leaders of the American Jewish Committee and the American Jewish Congress to get together and formulate a unified American Jewish program in regard to the German stuation. This should be done without further delay. There is no reason why any Jewish organization should take upon itself the responsibility of speaking in the name of all Jewry on any matter that effects them all and on which there is conflict. All Jews should appreciate the senselessness of attempting to do something for the Jews of Germany if that attempt is to compromise the unity and welfare of the more than 1,000,000 Jews in America.

So far as further protests are concerned, it appears from what the Nazis have already done, that all the protests in the world will not alter their course. In fact the entire world is in constant protest against the Nazi terror. Not only the Jews, but also the liberal political elements, the Catholics and Protestants, the labor unions, the Masons, the academic, musical, theatrical worlds, and all other elements suffering Nazi persecution are in a state of protest. The Nazi danger is no more a Jewish menace; it is an international danger Members of the British and French Parliaments rise up and utter protests against Ilitlcrism more dynamic than could possibly be uttered by the Jewish leaders themselves. Many German American societies have uttered protests on behalf of Jews and non-Jews in Germany.

The purpose of Jewish protests is to arouse the sentiment of the rest of the world to the horrors of the Jewish situaton. This has been done. Should it be continued? By all means yes, but the form of the protest opens up other questions. Are street parades with banners and all the excitement attendant thereto more effective than meetings in halls or resolutions of organized groups? Here is a real question of policy for the leaders of American Jewry to determine among 'themselves dispassionately, honestly, unselfishly and with due regard not only to the Jews in Germany but the Jews in America as well. We look to the national Jewish leaders to determine this controversial matter, because it has to do somewhat with governmental policy in Washington and they are in a better position to know the attitude of the state department than the Jews in local communities.

It ought to be a simple matter. Either a mass parade of Jews will help the Jews of Germany or it will harm them. If it will help them, we ought to have parades and demonstrations. If it will not, help them, we ought not to have them. After all, nobody wants to march in a parade without being sure what he is marching for.

Felix Adler, founder'of the Ethical Culture movement, and its leading exponent for over fifty years, is mourned by Jew and non-Jew who have the tolerance and vision to see beyond the sharp lines of dogmatic religious boundaries in their quest for basic spiritual values. Dr. Adler received the best training for Jewish leadership possible in his time. He was the son of Dr. Samuel Adler, for many years the noted rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, New York.

Graduating from Columbia university he was sent to Berlin and Heidelberg to receive training under the tutelage of the master Jewish minds of Germany to prepare for the rabbinate. He was slated to be successor to his father in the most influential Jewish pulpit in the world, but he chose to abandon that opportunity to become the preacher of an ethical philosophy stripped of all creedal tradition. At the time, many Jews regarded him as a virtual apostate, but in effect his "ethical culture" was nothing more than the pure ethics of Judaism propounded outside the walls of the synagogue. It was a simple Judaism stripped of title, ritualism and dogma, designed to appeal to all persons who believed themselves "emancipated" from the established church or synagogue entities. It was to be the "pure religion" aiming only to emphasize the good life for the individual and to inspire its application to the correction of social evils on behalf of all human beings, regardless of creed, color, or nationality.

The Ethical Culture movement itself became a sort of cult or church, like all such attempts at "pure It was an easy refuge for those Jews, who for one reason or another, desired to escape the synagogue, but who couldn't go far enough to join a Christian church. It likewise served as an attractive haven for those Christians, wTho, undoubtedly sincere, desired to escape the dogmatism of the church. How effective the Ethical Culture movement became it is difficult to tell, but unquestionably thousands of persons were inspired to a higher appreciation of ethical and religious standards by the intellectual honesty and spiritual integrity of Dr. Adler, who preached and lived the ethical life. Dr.

Adler himself was a personality in American history. Few movements of civic and social betterment in his time passed without the benefit of his sponsorship or active participation. He was one of the first Americans to raise his voice against the child labor evil and was for many years chairman of the National Child Labor Committee. He was equally active in eradicating the white slave traffic and other social evils. He was active in prison reform, in the eradication of city slums, in better education, and in other constructive measures to bring society to a higher level of civilization.

In his attempt to preserve the spirit of religion without its corporeal body of dogmatism and ritualism, Dr. Adler was merely a hundred years or more ahead of his time. But the effort was worthwhile, and in some distant day when mankind has actually become civilized, the name of Dr. Felix Adler will be written large in the history of human progress. Germany Loses Trade One of the consoling things disclosed by the Nation writer, is that Germany has experienced a severe drop in foreign trade since the Jewish hounding began. The writer cites as authority for this belief, the statement of a Jew recently discharged from the German Chamber of Commerce.

According to this man, orders for German goods are being cancelled wholesale from all parts of the world. I had a personal confirmation of this the other day on visiting the Aquitania as it was set for Europe. I was told that this English ship had an increased patronage of about 25 per cent which was attributed to Jews who formerly travelled on German lines. Another evidence of this is the fact that the French liners have now equipped themselves with kosher cuisines, to make sure of attracting the Jewish patronage. Palestine's Bright Spot The one bright spot in the Jewish world of late has been Palestine.

Indeed, in a sense, it has been the one bright spot in the whole world. The world has been suffering from economic depression. The world with the exception of Palestine. Writing in Harpers Monthly, Wm. Zukerman is probably right in saying that if what has taken place in Palestine had occurred on a larger scale, the eyes of the world would be turned to it, to find the way of escape from economic collapse.

For Palestine, without inflation, without reconstruction corporations and farmers loans, and in a time of international depression has been prospering. Will It Be Dimmed? Yet hopeful as this appears to be, Zukerman has abandoned hope. The Palestine dream, he believes, is over, and principally because the land speculator has come in. Prices of land are now so high in Palestine by reason of the fact that the speculators seeing the rush to Palestine are holding the land for a raise, that few of the settlers can meet the terms. And when they do meet it, they have little left for their work, or else they must resort to money lenders charging usurious interests.

By reason also of the fact that the land is being held for a speculative rise, little new land is going into use. Those settlers who are coming in are thus forced to compete with the existing laborers, and thus the wages of labor in general are being forced down. The unions are being forced into a bitter struggle. Wages are coming down and hours of labor are being lengthened. In other words, Zukerman sees a crash all around.

The one faint candle in this world of darkness threatens to be dimmed, at a time when its need was the greatest. A Simple Remedy It is heartrending to think of this taking place, when the remedy is so simple. All that really needs to be done is for the Jewish communities, which like governments all over the world, derive most of their revenues from buildings and other improvements, to place the full burden of the taxes on the land. Hitlerism, as the world now views it, carries within itself the seeds of its own destruction. If the world does nothing more than merely stand by and look on, the crazy Nazi "revolution" will in the course of a comparatively brief time simply collapse into nothingness, for its record so far reads like the case history of an in the fin-curable ward of an insane asylum. The Nazi case record against the Jew ought to be sufficient in exposing the psychopathic nature of the prevalent German rulers. But they do not seem to be satisfied with that demonstration of their medieval madness. Having eliminated the Jew as a "menace" to their they proceed to wipe out other sections of the population.

And so they go on to destroy root and branch the millions of Communists, Socialists, and Republicans, who have been part of Germany for generations, thus adding many more millions of persons to the millions of Jews throughout the world unfriendly to the nation. They proceed to add many more millions of world enemies by their blasphemous assault upon the Christian church and the Holy Bible, held sacred by millions of Christians throughout the world for two thousand years. Then with one stroke of the mailed fist they wipe out the Masonic order with its two hundred years of tradition and service, thus causing revulsion of feeling in the hearts of countless members of the Masonic order in other countries. Then with continuing diabolical ferocity they swoop down on the German labor unions and co-operative organizations with its millions of members built up over a period of several generations, and thus attract the hatred of tens of millions of labor folk throughout the world. And to cap the climax of this stranger-than-fiction monstrosity they set a day for the burning of all books in schools, colleges, public and private libraries that have anything to do with anything that dos not meet the test of their insanities! Well, words fail us in adequately describing our amazement.
