That Sunday when Orson Welles scared a lot of people stiff by bringing the Martians down by radio to destroy the earth, I was at my radio set in my living room. Brave spirit that I always have been, 1 was not frightened.

I said to my wife: "The Martians have invaded New Jersey and it may be a good thing. They may have something. They couldn't do any worse with the earth than the earth-people have. If they come to our city we'll open our spare bedroom to several of them." Even as I was saying this, I became aware of an unusual clatter in my radio set and suddenly, out came a Martian on a sound wave. Their advanced knowledge of everything has enabled the Martians not only to transmit sound but also heavy objects by radio.

The visiting Martian was an individual such as I had never seen before. He had one eye which was centered in his forehead. Later he explained to me that on Mars the inhab $3.00 Per Year Subscriptions in Advance No. 13 Vol. 42 DECEMBER 2, 1938 The Welfare Fund Asks Community Discipline The resolution passed recently by the board of directors of the Milwaukee Welfare Fund re-affirming its fundamental principle of unity and order in all emergency fund-raising activities undoubtedly meets general community approval.

It took years of patient work to bring together the various Jewish groups in this city, to reconcile their real or imagined differences, and to unite them on the sound and practical basis of mutual helpfulness and co-operation in the raising of money as a single unit for their various causes. The short history of the Welfare Fund has proved beyond doubt its worthiness and value not only in the evident saving of time, effort and expense by eliminating a multiplicity of appeals, but more so by the better and more wholesome spirit of mutual respect and confidence that has been engendered among the various groups. What has ben so patiently and successfully built up could be very easily destroyed by a confusion in answering the many emergency appeals that have been coming to us from national bodies to meet the crisis in Europe. It is to the great credit and honor of the leaders of all the constituent agencies of the Fund that they have agreed to meet these emergency appeals only under the auspices and within the policy of the Welfare Fund. This is sane, sensible, practical and Jewish in these critical times, for above everything else we should be concerned with the maintenance of disciplined Jewish unity in our own ranks.

This discipline should extend as well to the individual contributors to the various causes. They must co-operate with their own leaders by refusing to respond to any appeal that does not bear the sanction of the Welfare Fund. The community may well trust the leaders of the Fund to make decisions with due regard to the needs and the sentiments of the Jewish people. The Welfare Fund has set up a permanent office, competently staffed, to examine carefully and thoroughly all appeals for funds as to their worthiness and authenticity. It is established not only to co-ordinate and unify fund raising but also to protect the public against any impositions on its credulity and generosity.

Every individual can do his part in establishing a real Jewish unity in Milwaukee by adhering to the recent resolution of the Welfare Fund. If in doubt on any fund appeal from any source for Jewish purposes call the Welfare Fund office, Brumder Building, Daly 4446. Dies Would Exchange U. S. Reds, Nazis and Fascists for Oppressed Minorities Abroad Washington, D.

C. (WNS)--A bill localizing the exchange of Nazis, Fascists and Communists in this country, even if they are citizens, for groups of oppressed minorities in Europe will be introduced in the next Congress by Congressman Martin Dies of Texas. Dies said his bill would propose the creation of a Federal transfer agency to negotiate property exchanges. "One oppressed refueve is worth two or these disgruntled Americans," he said. Radio Misinterpreted It was a cause of astonishment for him that the inhabitants of the earth had difficulty to discover truth and righteousness even with two eyes. He knew all about us, was aware of all the current events, was distressed at the way things had gone in the world. We engaged thus in small talk until he suddenly asked: "Do you know, sir, why the Martians have come to the earth?" Well, I replied, it seems that Orson Welles brought you down to destroy this earth. But I wasn't afraid. I felt you couldn't do any worse with the earth than we were doing with it.

When the Rev. Coughlin was going strong on the air during the 1930 presidential campaign, it was with great restraint that we refrained from indulging our natural inclination to refute and argue the suhtle but apparent false statements against Jews with which he seasoned his dynamic appeal for support to his own political movement to oust the national administration by ballots if possible and "by bullets" if necessary. Our restraint was based on the theory that answering and arguing a palpable falsehood gives substance and dignity thereto and accepts the very "issue" that the perpetrator of the falsehood desires to create on other motives and for other objectives. We still hold to that policy.

Our present comment on the stir created by Coughlin in his obvious anti-Semitic attack is not to refute or argue whether 56 of the original 59 communists who overthrew the Kerensky regime in Russia in 1917 were Jews, or whether Jewish bankers financed that revolution, or whether Jews are responsible for communism, atheism, capitalism andor any and all the ills, aches and pains that disturb this sick world. These are matters of fact or fiction that can be readily proved or disproved. They are either true or false, and certainly it is not necessary for us to use up a lot of energy and space in these columns to prove their falsehood to our readers. And certainly it would be worse than futile for us to attempt to prove to the Rev. Coughlin's satisfaction that he is wrong and is the "innocent victim" of 'gross misinformation and misconception.

We leave this proof to those who may not be charged with the bias which may naturally be attributed to us on this subject. So on the matter of the number and influence of Jews who were communist leaders in 1917 we yield to one Alexander Kerensky, who happened to be Premier of the Russian government overthrown by the communists, who ought to know the facts much better than Coughlin or us, for he was there at the time and is not a Jew himself and certainly cannot be biased in favor of any variety of communists. And Kerensky not only denies Coughlin's "facts" but is amazed that "any intelligent person can be so misinformed as Father Coughlin appears to be." And on the matter of financing the revolution we have the refutation of one Leon Trotsky, who ought to know the facts, too, and who certainly is no friend of the Jews; and also the American Secret Service which denies Coughlin's reference to it as authority for other libels. What we should like to know is why Coughlin made his speech about the Jews at all. What is his motive and what is his objective? Is it Coughlin's design to so intimately link up the names of Jews and Communism that the very existence of Communism in every part of the world becomes a Jewish responsibility, and that the world must look to the handful of Jews to eradicate it from the earth, and that if the Jews do not overthrow Soviet Russia and eradicate communism and communists from all other countries it is proof that thev do not desire to do so, and that therefore to eradicate communism all that will be necessary is to eradicate all the Jews in the world? This may sound fantastic even as a possible fixation in Coughlin's mind, but in view of the fact that he has been publishing in his weekly paper the oft-proven forgeries called the "Protocols of Zion" it is not without substance.

What can be Coughlin's ultimate aim and objective? Is it to bring peace and order out of chaos in the world according to the doctrines of Pope Pius upon which he has so often justified his plea for "social Or is it to add further to the confusion and chaos in this sick world? If his motive is to incite racial and religious hate in America isn't he inviting the very disaster that has overtaken his own Church and his own people in Germany, Austria, Spain and Mexico? Coughlin and every other Catholic priest and layman ought to know that it doesn't make any difference against what minority element this hatred is directed. Racial and religious hatred can no more be confined to a limited area or to a certain people than can an epidemic of smallpox. Hitler, Streicher and Goebbels know this, and certainly every intelligent American Christian must know it by this time. If Coughlin doesn't know, then every responsible Christian ought to know what was so plainly stated by the eminent Catholic leader, Joseph V. Connolly, at the National Eucharistic Congress at New Orleans in these words: "I say that if the Christians of Europe, warned of the diabolical paganism behind Nazi and Communist persecutions, had acted as Christians and fought for the protection of the persecuted of any creed, madmen would not now burn a crucifix in Cardinal Innitzer's palace, imprison innocent priests and nuns, defile holy monks and drive little Catholic children from the schools." And every person who reads knows that when the pagan Nazis in Germany get through robbing the Jews of all their worldly goods they will then proceed to expropriate the wealth of the Catholic Church.

Every Catholic ought to know that Coughlin is brandishing a torch that may well fire the flames of a much more devastating anti-Catholic hatred than can be visited upon the lesser minority of Jews. This is not a "Jewish issue," and we do not recognize it as such. Coughlin is not attacking Jews alone. He is attacking the very foundations of his own Catholic Church as so clearly expressed by Pope Pius on the very same subject-matter of race and religious hatred and persecution. It is not up to the Jews to "answer" or "protest" the un-Catholic and un-Chris-tian motives of Coughlin.

That is the responsibility of the Church that Coughlin represents and professes to speak for, so far as the non-Catholic world is concerned. We do not declare or intimate here that the Church should go beyond its own policy of free speech to its own clergy to discipline Coughlin. And we have no desire whatsoever to "suppress" him. We believe that the exposure of Coughlin's poison to the open atmosphere develops its own antidote. But we would expect a responsible Catholic lay or clerical leader to combat the false impressions left by Coughlin on as extensive a radio network and before as great a radio audience as has been made available to the Detroit priest.

We would expect a vigorous disavowal of Coughlin and his preachments of subtle hate not on behalf of the Jews but on behalf of the good name and honor and Americanism of the Catholic Church and people in the United States.
