JOSEPH 17 IMMACULATA 9 Wt 613a, 1 60s A- 1 maTA k. Front8 of weather systems and precipitation. Temperature bands By RON FOX STAFF WRITER ORADELL St. Joseph doesn't spring the hook-and-pitch play often, but coach Tony Karcich has a history of running it at the perfect time. The 53-yard pass-pitch play set the stage for the Green Knights' third straight State Parochial 3 championship Saturday, but the 17-9 win over Immaculata wasn't assured until the defense smothered a two-point conversion attempt and intercepted two passes all in the fourth quarter.

Only then did St. Joseph have its fifth trophy in seven years. First, the play also known as the hook-and-lateral. Quarterback Jim Malizia threw 11 yards to Jonathan Lee-Hugh, who pitched to trailing halfback Jon McPhee, who completed the 53-yard score. "I went out and turned around and, in my peripheral vision, I saw a lot of kids around me," said Lee-Hugh, a combination tight endwide receiver.

"That's when I knew it would work. I had time to set and I saw a kid on the side of Jon, so I tried to hit him right in the Lee-Hugh could have been forgiven if he had any misgivings when the play was called, however. "Last year we tried it and I got my helmet cracked by Don Bosco Prep's Ryan Grant," he said. No need to worry, though, because the combo play is magical in playoff games. "We did it when I was coaching Bergen Catholic in 1975, just before the half against DePaul," Karcich recalled.

"And in 1989 we St. Joe's were losing, but did it with five seconds left to beat Kennedy." After the double connection, St Joseph (11-1) made a two-point run and made it for an 11-3 lead with 32 seconds left in the third quarter. Matt Ward swept the right side behind blockers Shawn McMackin, Jason Abrams, and McPhee. 16: Football All maps, Skies will become partly cloudy over the Northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday with dry and mild conditions continuing. The Southeast will also remain partly to mostly sunny and mild. Low pressure developing in the Midwest will lead to mild temperatures over the area along with showers develop ing for Tuesday. Skies over the Plains will be partly to mostly cloudy with showers likely for late Monday and early Tuesday. The Rockies will be cloudy with snow likely as low pressure moves across the area.

Another storm system will lead to rain and snow over the West Coast along with windy conditions. Today Tomorrow CITY HI Lo HI Lo in the fourth quarter on an 83-yard pass from Mike Dugan to running back Adam Colicchio, who adjusted to pull in the ball over the opposite shoulder. But when Dugan attempted a swing pass to fullback Jason Jernigan for two points, McPhee raced up to make the initial hit and Mike Tosephson and Nick D'A-lessandro joined in for the stop. "I saw No. 36 Jernigan come in and he's tough," said had three receivers on the right and they all crossed over to the left.

I went with them for a second and then just reacted." Immaculata's attempt at an on-sides kick failed to travel far enough, so St Joe had the ball at the Spartans' 49. The Green Knights drove to the 6 with Karcich continually calling out that he did not need a touchdown. He preferred to kill the clock and was worried that if his team scored and then missed the extra point, Immaculata would have a chance to tie. "The kids wanted to go and I made the mistake and went with their emotion," said Karcich. Matt Ward went in from the 1 and, as Karcich grimaced, Ron LaSasso missed the extra-point kick with 47 seconds left LaSasso made up for it, however, by intercepting a pass at the St Joe 39 on the next play, sealing Immaculata's first loss of the season.

Neither team got much done offensively in the first half, as LaSasso and Mike DeSantis traded field goals. "We definitely made halftime adjustments," said Ward (25 carries, 156 yards). "We didn't expect Immaculata to be so good on the perimeter, so we decided to pound it on the inside." Malizia, playing on a knee that needs surgery, was praised for his toughness on a run for a first down "I wasn't thinking about the knee," he said. "I was thinking about the championship ring."
