Pnge aro 7 IT aro Trxrrji nmnulcy 5 ovvmbrr 20 975 Waco Policemen Testing Their Pistol Proficiency By TOM ANDERSON Staff Writer By riday night Roger Ander son may not hear too well and he may smell a little hke gunpow der but he will know by then how accurate all 158 Waco police of ficers arc with a pistol Anderson is supervising the annual pistol certification for commissioned officers With shifts changing at 7 am 3 pm and 11 pm his davs this week start early and end late Monday officers fired from 8 am 7 pm and Tuesday firing started at 5 am and lasted until after 5 pm The week long firing program is part of a recent order by thief Al Roznovsky who had to re qualifv too which said al! offic ers must qualify on the pistol range with the pistol they carry while on duty want all our officers to carry a functional serviceable weapon Roznovsky said He said all uniformed officers carry 38 calibcr or 357 cahber magnum pistols on duty while plainclothes officers can carry automatics and sub nose revol vers if they choose They can carry it provided they qualify with it on the range he said Roznovsky has banned pistols smaller than 9mm and those with fancy grips He doesn want his officers carrying around small handguns such as a 22 cahbcr Anderson said officer must fire 129 qualifying shots with an additional 30 allowed for practice 1 hose who don qual ify must come back until they do" he said Anderson who has been with the department training section since 1973 said each officer must score 180 points to qualify but the average score for Waco officers is about 240 points which would qualify them as a sharpshooter It takes each of ficer an hour and a half to shoot the necessary rounds with the entire department taking about GO hours "We II fire about 25000 rounds thisweik Iesaid Offnerswhu carry standard 38 and357 magrum pistols are given their ammunition by the city while those who carry more exo tic armament must furnish their own Sight alignment and indi vidual concentration are the main errors committed by offic ers firing on the range "We have to work with them If a man is firing badlv we work with him and try to correct his mistakes Anderson said All of the shooting is done in precisely timed sequences Of ficers are ordered to shoot a specific number of shots an allotted lime "I he reason we set a time limit is to put them under stress hke they would en counter a real situation The stress here is not the same as a real situation but it is stress Anderson said 'Only someone who has been in one (stressful situation) can tell you what it hke "It a bad situation anytime you have to get into a real Ho said about a dozen officers have been involved in shooting incidents with burglars and armed robbers since he been with the department would like to have more firings than we do" he said but the budget allows just one mass department shooting match a year "Ao one is allowed on the range unless Lt Harold Steig (chief training officer) or I are here help individual officers signt in their weapons if they ask "he said 1 he department cuts down on cartridge cost by using reloaded ammunition but reloads this year have cause several mis fires during this qualifi cation One officer reportedly had 27 misfires 'Were going to recommend to the chief that we buy new ammunition and fire it through those weapons which misfired Those which still malfunction will be repaired or replaced he said 1 he annual qualification turns up minor defects in an officer pistol which usually can be fixed on thespot One officer was having trouble electing the shells Irani his revolver after fir ing but a small amount of lub ricant helped his problem Another was using pistol grips that were too large and lost him valuable seconds reloading That officer will now have hos wooden grips sawed down to make reloading easier and quicker fW 3 'to 4 4 i 5 7 SHARPSHOOTER TRAINING Waco police officer Marcus Garcia takes deadly aim on his tarqet during this week's pistol qualifications at the department's firing range Garcia is one of 158 officers who must re qualify this week on the range 1 'ml!
