The Raiders faced off against Seton Hall Prep in the finals for the fourth time in as many years, and defeated its rival 3-2 in front of 1,500 fans at Newark Bears Stadium last Saturday. The Raiders got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Nick Longo led off the game with a single, and moved to third when Joe Carlo reached on an error. With runners at the corners and Mike Maffucci at the plate, head coach Bob Harbison put Carlo in motion. Seton Hall catcher Matt Davidson threw through to second base, and Longo scampered home from third for the game's first run. The Pirates answered back in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own.

Steven Brooks led off the inning with a walk, and moved to third on a Rich Goulian single and a passed ball. Brooks scored on a Bobby Dombrowski RBI single. Nutley's Steve Armstrong was able to minimize the damage, inducing a double play and a ground-out to end the inning. Armstrong was locked in a pitchers' duel with Dan Merklingler, and neither pitcher surrendered a run for the next three innings, but the Raiders finally broke through in the fifth. Don Thomson started the third GNT title in the last four years.

"We knew coming in that we were going to have trouble getting hits against their pitching staff, so it was nice to get some runs on the board and relax." In the bottom of the inning the Pirates cut the lead to 3-2 on a sacrifice fly by Davidson. Following Davidson's RBI, the Pirates loaded the bases, but Armstrong was able to get Dom Timothy DenmanThe Nutley Sun my spots after that, but luckily I was able to settle down and start throwing strikes again." Armstrong was named the tournament's MVP for the second straight year, but this season's award was just a little sweeter. "Winning the MVP both years was great," Armstrong said.

"But it feels a lot better this season since we won the whole thing." Armstrong pitched every inning for the Raiders in the tournament, and al-(See Baseball on Page B2) the competition, many other members of the team turned in good performances at the event. Matt Cariani had a personal best in the 400-meter, and just missed qualifying for the groups, Matt Halma turned in a good time in the 400, and Dan Madice had a personal best in both the triple and long jump events. Sophomore Courtney D'Amato missed qualifying in the 800-meter by four seconds. The Raiders celebrate their inning off with an infield hit, and moved to second when Longo was hit by a pitch. Carlo hit into a fielder's choice, erasing Longo at second.

Next to the plate was Maffucci, and the power hitting catcher struck out, but Davidson was unable to hold on to the ball and Thomson scored from third, granting the Raiders a one-run lead. Carlo scored on a wild pitch with Anthony Alessio at the plate and the Raiders were in business, make his third trip to the groups, and hopefully the Meet of Champions. Klatsky set a new record in the 800-meter, and head coach Robert O'Dell believes he will be the number-one seed this weekend. The entire stadium went silent, but the tournament's MVP was able to continue, finishing the final two innings to grant the Raiders the championship. "I just went down," Armstrong said of his near injury.
