Today, the greatest prof lem facing the fruit grower Is that of Insect and disease control. WHhout a prod-net practically free of blemish be will find It almost Impossible to market his crop at a profit. As an Indication ot the size of the task facing the fruit grower, the following diseases and Insects are mentioned as among the enemies of the apple. They Include: scab, aphlds, bud-moth, scale, blister mite, case-bearers, green fruit worms, leaf-roller, rosy aphis, codling moth, and apple maggot. Some of the above are controlled spring and summer.

Apple orchards which go through rainy periods without a protective spray of lime-sulphur are certain to be badly A special. weather forecast cover lng the state's fruit growing sections Is sent out each night to county agents by the State College of Agriculture at Ithaca. During the critical Infection period when a forecast predicts a rain period starting within the next two or three days, the Wayne County agent prepares his warning and advice at once. Modern rapid communication facilities, the telephone In particular, play a vital rote In the management and In extending the scope of service of libraries today. This Is particularly true of the New York library with Its numerous branches serving an unusually wide range of readers Interested In many fields of research. Serving the Central Is a system of 124 telephones connecting various departments 1 ALBANY, Bept. 4 Nine weeks from today is election day and the fcusy period for the politicians la therefore Just beginning it Is rarely possible to get anything started before Labor Day. So far as party machinery la concerned, the first more Is the selection of a time and place for the state convention.

This Is done by the state committee of each party. The meeting of the Democratic committee has been called for Thursday of this week. The call for the Republican meeting is expected shortly. After the fixing of convention time and place comes the primary election, Thursday, September 13, changed by special act from the regular date, September 18, because the latter is a Jewish holiday. Convention Dates Are Limited The dates for the state convention are this year so limited that there Is very little choice.

The election law does nob permit them earlier than September 26 nor later than October 2. Important Jewish holidays Intervene at both ends of that period, so that the only a-vallable days without Infringing on them are the 26th, 27th, and 28th. Undoubtedly both conventions will be held within those three days. G. O.

P. Has Many Invitations The Democrats will hold their convention either at Buffalo or Rochester. They met in Albany In 1932 and will naturally go to the western part of the State this time. In like fashion, the Republicans, having held their last convention in Buffalo, are expected to go to the eastern or central part of the State. It Is understood there is a long list of bidders for the Q.

O. P. meeting, including Binghamton, Syracuse, Albany, New York City, Lake Placid and White Plains. Inquiry a-mong the leaders reveals a desire to held the meeting at the most convenient point where aa the same time it will be of greatest benefit to the party in the way of arousing Continued from Page One DOUBLE FUNERAL munity at large. WE THEREFORE RESOLVE, that copy of these "resolutions be engrossed and sent to members of his family, and that a copy be printed in the Erie County Independent.

Each of these 20' men Immediately passes the word along by telephone to three other growers, who In turn do likewise until all 209 are notified. This is accomplished by 7 a. m. and Immediately the spraying Is begun. On first thought this early morning telephoned advice- seems needless because of the postal card warning which usually arrives the same day.

However, with the larger growers It means an extra half day In which to cover the orchards and every minute Is needed. This year In Wayne County those orchards unprotected during two critical periods were "taken right out of the production picture," according to M. E. Buck-man, the county agent. In the words of Mr.

De May of A. J. De May and Sons, Sodus, N. growing 175 acres of apples, peaches, cherries and prunes, "With two sprayers working we gain a day's spraying by receiving spray service advice by telephone early In the morning. Such advice heeded Immediately often means the difference between a 100 crop and total failure, because If apples go through a rain period without spray protection against scab, tbe fruit Is sure to be damaged." Some appear and must be controlled at certain stages ot the development ot the fruit, while others may appear at almost any time.

Consequently, the fruit grower Is forced to spray his entire orchards eight and sometimes nine times between early April and mid-July. This Is a costly and formidable task when one realizes that thousands of gallons of sprays must be used to cover orchards ot 75 to 150 acres In size. The federal, state and county governments have combined In support ing county farm bureaus to aid the farmer. In Wayne County, In western New York, one of the chief tasks of the farm bureau agent Is to disseminate information and specific advice on fruit disease and Insect control. Besides the distribution of literature on the subject a Spray Information Service is conducted by mail, and telephone which operates as follows: Seven hundred and eighty fruit growers In the county signed up for the service and are on the general mailing list.

Of these 209 of the larger growers are members of a special telephone relay and are notified between 5 and 7 a. m. on the when Immediate action In the orchards Is Imperative. That it isn't practiced In the schools alone Is indicated by a Washington dispatch stating that Assemblyman Daniel McNamara Jr. a Democrat representing a New York City districts has resigned his position in the legal department of the Home Owners' Loan Corporation because its rules will not permit him to run for re-election while he holds that job.

In this connection comes the Information that "more than a hundred members of State Legislatures and employees of Congress have been on the payroll of the Home Owners Loan Corporation." 7e The American public reads mors today than ever before, judging by the attendance at the public libraries. Library officials report that this attendance has Increased approximately forty per cent during the past three years, generally characterised by business depression. Daring unemployment, many sought to educate as well as entertain themselves. The cutting down of working hours In recent years, It Is explained, has also provided additional opportunity for reading. As a result, the facilities of near ly all branches of library service have been utilised to capacity.

In some Instances the libraries have been forced to restrict attendance or else expand or extend facilities, wherever and whenever funds were available, to meet the need. The most used library In the world, as well as one of the largest, Is the New York Public Library, with some sixty branches, sub-branches and associated units in Manhattan, the Bronx and Richmond boroughs. The Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens have their own libraries with numerous branches. The Central Building of the New York Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street has more than 4.000,000 visitors a year an average daily attendance of over 11.000 persons. While no figures are available concerning the attendance at the various branch libraries, conducted by the circulation department! nearly 13,500.000 books a year are lent tor home use by this department.

And, of course, many millions attend without borrowing books, merely using them on the premises. The mammoth library with Its 3,610.000 books and pamphlets.
