Many of the original books can now be found in the Rare Book Room of the Buffalo and Erie County Library in downtown Buffalo. Sahlin left Aries in 1928 and operations ceased shortly after. Sahlin left to join his brother Alex in the first typographic service in Buffalo and continued his own venture. Paradise Press until his death in 1983. Kellogg sold his printing press to Melbert Cary and donated the type to a boy's institution in New York City.

During his stay in Eden in the mid-1920s, Kellogg had purchased 200 acres on Jennings Road with the vision of starting an artists colony to be called HilL" While his mansion was completed in 1927, "portable houses" for artists and the art colony never materialized. Kellogg took private art instruction and studied art at the Art Students League in New York City, the Buf-' falo School of Fine Arts and he studied painting in France and Italy. He had a studio inside his mansion and also had studios in California, Italy and France. Most of his paintings were fantasies of the outdoors. Kellogg sold his Jennings Road mansion in 1940 and moved to Santa Barbara, where he continued to paint until his death from a heart attack in 1944 at age 68.

Kellogg was married to Lida Deshler Willson of Leavenworth, Kansas, for a brief time in the '1920s during his days as a student at Harvard University and later, to Cossette Cupp of Eden. Material for this feature Is compiled by Town of Eden Historian Norma Hardy Webb. Spencer Kellogg Jr. brought the Aries Press to Eden in 1925 when he began operations at 2804 E. Church St (the Caskey home) in Eden.

Kellogg, born in Amsterdam, N.Y. in 1876, began bis business concerns in Buffalo in an oil, paint and varnish company. His partners includ- ed Sidney McDougall, his brothers Howard and Donald Kellogg, and. eventually his father, Spencer Sr. Upon Spencer death in 1922, when Spencer Jr.

was age 46, he decided to take early retirement from the successful business and -spend the rest of his life pursuing artistic including the printing of fine books. He had already begun this pursuit in the establishment of the Aries Book Shop on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo in April, 1921. By 1925, plans were being formulated for an art press in Eden. The book shop closed in 1926. Kellogg purchased a very expensive press from England on Aug.

25, 1925. The press, called the Albion Hand Press was used by Morris in 1897 to print "Kilmscott Chaucer" which was touted as the finest book printed in England. As the press was installed in the modest cottage on East Church Street, Emil George Sahlin, an assistant to the well known Elbert Hubbard of East Aurora, was hired to assist, Sahlin had spent 11 years with owner of the Roy-craft Print Shop. Kellogg and Sahlin produced the first work of the Aries Press on Dec. 3, 1925 "Aries" a flier which described the Morris press.

During the first year of business, "The Ghost Ship" by Richard Middleton was also printed in a limited edition of 275 copies. English all-rag handmade paper was printed damp set in 14 points Caslon and bound in "Ghost" received honorable mention from the Jury of the American Institute of Graphic Arts as one of the 50 best books produced in 1925-26. Printing was done in Eden but the book's illustrations, design and binding were done elsewhere. The binding was done by the Roycrofters and design was done in England by James Guthrie of Pear Tree Press. Other publications included: "In Memoriam" by Friends of Lt Young; "Ad Torquatum" by Horace; 'Ballade" by Francis Villon; "Rhyme Sheets" by Edgar Allen Poe; "In Praise of My Lady" by William Morris; "Verses" by Gertrude Kellogg Clark; and publications by Spencer Kellogg Jr.
