wm by A. Gardener OAKHAM. MASS. The situation with respect to my tiller goes from bad to worse. I still had heard no word from Charlie aa to the extent of the damage, so last Wednesday I went down to see for myself.

He still hadn't added up the costs, which he then did while I was there. First of all, he said the case was sprung out of shape so the sprockets were turning at an angle. I don't understand how that could happen. If that half is sprung, what about the half I have here? Is that also sprung and must be replaced? The lower sprocket, the one welded to the drive shaft that turns the tinea and is the most expensive sprocket, is badly worn and must be replaced The two largest chains are badly worn and the largest one of those costs over $40. The bottom line: two spacers, two chains, one sprocket with shaft equals $236.

I had ordered the two tine assemblies over three weeks ago at about $65 each. This will bring tht whole rejuvination to $355. I paid $333 three years ago to replace all the sprockets and chains. If I have to replace the other half of the case, that will add another $60 making the total cost over "Yes, but," Charlie argues, "a new tiller costs over $600." Small comfort! And, of course, all these parts must be ordered from the manufacturer in Wisconsin and will take three weeks to get here. "Two weeks," he said.

I asked if he had my tine assemblies that I ordered over three weeks ago? "No," he said. "I rest my case." I finally told him not to order the parts until after I came back from the hospital and I may have a better idea of how much gardening I will be able to My difficulties with machinery are not confined to the garden machinery, I found out last week. A week ago last Saturday, I had started' to type my column for the Barre (MA) Gazette and became sleepy, so I got up to make a cup of coffee and In so doing, tipped the typewriter table over. I reached for the typewriter but' missed It and the typewriter landed on the floor The large cover' that I raise to change ribbons and lift-off tape came off but was undamaged. The smaller cover also came off and broke the plastic hinge on one side.

That, surprisingly, was repaired with Superglue, the first time I have ever been successful in using that glue. The ribbon, case and aH came out and the ribbon was pulled out of the side of the case. I had bought six ribbons two weeks before, but it "went against my Scotch ancestry to discard a half roll of ribbon (a roll costs $4), so I worked half an hour to get it back inside and finally gave up and got out a new ribbon. That is when I discovered that the man at the typewriter store had given me the wrong tape in spite of my telling him it was for a Brother 60 something. I couldn't remember that it is a 60 XL.

Needless to say, I didn't finish that column until the next Monday afternoon as I had to go to Worcester to exchange ribbons in the morning. Tuberous begonia seedlings flower well the first year, but when they are left outdoors in the ground until frosted, they haven't grown much tuber. I had about 70 of the upright type in pots in a cold frame all summer, so before frost I brought them in the greenhouse and there were about 30 of the hanging pot type that were in the greenhouse all summer. I held all of these on the greenhouse bench until last week to see if I could get larger tubers and I think I was successful as I could see some tubers at least two inches across. To prepare for my impending three week absence, I cut the tops off and put the tubers undisturbed in the pots under the bench where they will stay all winter.

Antarctica, one of two lily bulbs back-ordered by Wayside, arrived today and were planted Immediately. That leaves only Citronella to come and be planted. I hope it gets here before the ground freezes.
