I wrote last week that if nothing went wrong with the machinery, I would have those large areas where we had mowed the grass, tilled the weekend of 729-30, but as of 84 those areas have not yet been tilled. Barring unforseen events, they should be tilled this past weekend. I was reminded last week that I had promised to judge the vegetable and flower exhibits at the Oakham Youth Fair. This fair was started nearly 30 years ago by Eva Grimes, a cousin of mine, and Doris Warner. Doris died four years ago.

Ellie Downer stepped in to help. W-LFROEHLEY FUNERAL HOME 649-2400 84 Lake Street Hamburg, NY great but by the time I had judged, gabbed with friends and eaten a couple of hamburgers at a food' tent, a morn-" ing was gone. In the afternoon I tilled the, old strawberry bed a second time to make sure all the weeds and strawberry plants were dead.

Sunday afternoon a stack of wooden I flats standing in 'the driveway was dried out" very well and crying for a coat of Cuprinol, so I painted them. It was a good thing I did as I had barely finished when a quickie thunderstorm came up. Thus, no tilling. My brother read my column in the Barre Gazette about difficulty in kill-; ing the potato bugs and said, very smugly, "I sprayed my potatoes with something that killed all my potato bugs." He couldn't remember the name of the material, so the next time I was over there I looked at the bag. It was Imidan.

I had tried Imidan several years ago with very poor results, but it was certainly worth a try, so I did. Maybe it killed some but it left far too many. A few days later I was examining' my "How Sweet It Is" corn and found many of those neat round holes indicative of the corn borer, even though the tassels are not beginning to show. .1 sprayed the corn with Sevin. I wonder how effective the spray is because each time I try to get the spray down the center roll of leaves, the spray blows the leaf to keep the spray out of the center.

I only hope the spray gets down to where the worm is. I made up far too much spray, so we sprayed the potatoes with what was left, just in case Sevin was still effect tive. Again, maybe it killed some bugs, but by no means, ALL. It looks as if I will have to spray with Thiodan again. I have been out there with the triple 15 fertilizer again, fertilizing the asparagus to see if I can get a better yield of good sized spears next spring.

I also fertilized the corn even though it was still a good dark green. This was after Amy and I had been through pullingall-'-the weeds. We' have declared war on weeds all over the garden so it is now as weed-free as it used to be in my younger days, the result's' of cutting down on the size add hiring good The dqy we sprayed the corn we also had enough Seviii spray left to spray the beans as the Mexican bean beetles had begun to make lace of the (eaves. At their initial stage they are very difficult to see but the holes and lace are easy to see. I don't know how effective it was, but the only larvae I could find later were dead.

I hope I killed them all as they are repulsive looking creatures when picking beans. I am in hopes that Mrs. Gardener will soon be cured of her constant low grade temperature which has been holding between 100 and .101. Dr. Bergman, the specialist from -Worcester, examined her again a week ago last Sunday and decided her trou- ble is a type of pneumonia from inhal- -ing food.

For some time now she has been coughing after drinking liquids and I have talked to the doctor at the hospital without any results. Dr. Bergman says the throat muscles are not working correctly so some food and liquids go into the lungs. The solution is to put a tube directly into the stomach and feed her directly into the stomach, something that had been previously suggested but with no clear reason. All this made sense to me so I gave my permission and have signed the' necessary papers.

I expect they will take Emily; to Worcester Memorial Hospital this week where a surgeon will perform the Then we won't feed her' by mouth, the pneumonia will clear up and the temperature will go down to normal, but she will still be a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.
