Fire Fumes make some students ill FROM PAGE A1 'Lingering smoke is a worry, es- in light of a fire thatgutted a classroom Sunday night at South Middle School, 2040 S. Fourth, said Fire Marshal Jerry Scott. i Christopher's daughter, Abby, a at South Middle School, was one of about 90 students who went to the school office the day after the fire, com- pjaining that the lingering smoke and a chemical odor were causing headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and breathing prob- leins. Fifty students were sent home frpm school Monday, and workers spent that night sealing off the burned room, replacing filters on heating units in each classroom, us- fans at every door to ventilate tlje building and removing burned materials from the classroom. JDel Meier, health educator for the Salina-Saline County Health Department, said nurses couldn't be sure that it was the fumes and not a virus that was sickening the children.

after her daughter, Melissa, a seventh-grader who suffers from asthma, called to say she was having trouble breathing, Meier thought the situation warranted further investigation. I went into the school, I could not believe the level of chemical fumes," Meier said. After being at the school for just a couple of hours, Meier said, Melissa's peak air flow, a measure of the amount of air getting through the airways, had dropped from 450 to 500 down to 250. Meier called the state health department and Dr. William Null, the county health officer.

Abput the time school was dismissed Monday, Meier, Null and Warren Griffin, the health department's environmental supervisor, arrived to survey the air quality. There aren't meters to detect chemical and smpke fumes, Meier said, so the number of student and teacher complaints was the only gauge of the seriousness of the problem. The group instructed school officials to seal off the burned rooms with plastic, to remove the burned materials from the room, to change heater filters in every room, to set up exhaust fans and to get rid of chemical-soaked rags that had been placed in the burned room to try to get rid of the smoke odor. Meier said the chemical had mixed with the smoke and was causing some of the symptoms in people inside the school. "That chemical was not really meant to be inhaled," Meier said.

"We felt it needed to get out of there." Principal Ray Tucker said maintenance workers were at the building until midnight Monday and returned at 4 a.m. Tuesday to ready the building for students. By the time Meier returned early Tuesday, to inspect and see if classes could be held, the odor was almost gone and officials ruled the school could remain open. The school nurse reported to Meier's office every two hours Tuesday so Meier could monitor student complaints. That day, Meier said, about a dozen students were seen with what could have been smoke-related ailments and four students were sent home.

An undetermined number of other students simply didn't attend school that day, including Melissa Meier. "I kept her home," Meier said. "Smoke odor lingers for quite a while, and I was still concerned." Melissa returned to school Wednesday. After experiencing the air quality problems at South Middle School, Scott said fire officials probably will be more likely, in the future, to call the health department for air-quality checks after fires. "In the future, you probably will see them get involved more," Memorials may be made to the Holyrood Ambulance Service or Salina Regional Medical Center Intensive Care Unit.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 901 S. Main, Quinter 67752. ON THE RECORD Scott said. Fire officials routinely call the health department when fires in restaurants or areas where food is being prepared could affect the quality of the food.

Scott said he also would urge business owners to write, in their disaster planning guides, that health department officials should be called after any fire. After the school fire, Scott instructed school officials to notify parents of children with asthma, allergies and other breathing-related problems. Christopher's daughter, Abby, stayed in school, but she's still battling allergy problems possibly related to the smoke and chemicals. That's why Christopher was happy to see Meier after the ballast blew at First United Methodist Church Thursday. Meier said church officials were concerned about the smoke smell on stuffed toys in the day care center, and about the lingering odor throughout the building.

Meier gave the building a clean bill of health. "She checked everything out, and that was good," Christopher said. "It's hard to believe what smoke can do to you. We were just lucky there weren't a bunch of people in there." Hospital report Salina Regional Health Center PENN ADMISSIONS None.
