ARTS ENTERTAINMENT PAGE 38 OCTOBER 23, 2009 CLIFTON JOURNAL Bringing women's stories to life 3) release of the book "Game Face" which chronicled the psychological and emotional journey of women in sports. "The project was designed as a tool for teachers to help give young students a sense of self-worth and importance, no matter what they chose to do," said Macy, adding that the sponsoring company donated Macy's project to nearly 4,000 schools across the country. But Macy's latest work on Bly is by far her most personal achievement to date. "Maybe because Nellie Bly was a journalist and her career took so many paths," said Macy. "She didn't always behave when it was expected that women behave.

I have the best intentions in my heart to be gutsy, but I usually am a bit conservative instead. I aspire to be more like her." Elizabeth Jane Cochran, born on May 5, 1864, was given the pen name Nellie Bly by her first editor, George Madden of the Pittsburgh Dispatch because it was not proper for a woman to write for a newspaper at that time. Bly reported on many issues including World War I while living in England. Sue Macy's works and biography can be found on her Web site, www.suemacy.com. "Bylines: A Photobiography of Nellie Bly" is in bookstores now.

By Angela Daidone Correspondent CLIFTON Sue Macy has made a career out of writing about history-making women. She's written about Olympic athletes, Wild West rodeo stars and now a famous journalist. Her latest book "Bylines: A Photobiography of Nellie Bly" chronicles the life of journalist Nellie Bly, who courageously defied what was considered a man's world in the late 1800s. "Nellie Bly was a gutsy woman who did not want to be stuck in a traditional woman's role of writing about the flower show for the society pages," said Macy, a Clifton native who now lives in Englewood. But Macy herself is a gutsy woman of sorts, too.

She started writing in the eighth grade, with the encouragement of her junior high school teacher Elizabeth Irons, who also served as adviser to the school's newspaper, the Garrett View, of which Macy was editor. "Mrs. Irons gave me a lot of support and made me realize that writing was what I really wanted to do," said Macy. Macy went on to become editor of the Hub, Clifton High School's newspaper and attended Princeton University upon graduation. Sue Macy "When I wrote my first book in 1993, one of the local papers ran an article about me," said Macy.

"Someone sent it to Mrs. Irons who was living in Connecticut at the time. She actually called me and asked, 'So what are you going to do I felt like I was on assignment again." Macy has been "on assignment" ever since. She has authored nine books as well as written on many educational publications for school-aged children. One of her proudest accomplishments, she said, was when she was asked to collaborate on an educational project following the PHOTOS COURTESY OF SUE MACY Clifton native Sue Macy is releasing her latest book which chronicles the life of journalist Nelly Bly.
