DJ Pg A13 Red Black December 6, 2001 Dateline Journal Page 13 Senior News New Officers Unwanted cell phones distributed to senior citizens for emergencies es Sheriff Ron Fava announced that the Passaic County Sheriff's Department is kicking off its campaign to collect used or unwanted cellular phones and accessories with the specific intent of meeting the emergency access needs of our county's seniors and those with special medical challenges. Major supermarkets, police headquarters, libraries and other high-traffic stores in each of the county's municipalities have been designated as dropoff locations. County residents will see posters in various locations with specific area drop-off sites. They may also check their local cable network bulletin boards or call the Passaic County Sheriff's Department LIFELINE hotline at 881-4618. Fava initiated the LIFELINE Project after receiving a call and subsequent request from a local senior citizen.

Several years ago, while serving as the Passaic County Prosecutor, Fava spearheaded a very successful cellular phone drive to benefit victims of domestic violence. In fact, the majority of such campaigns nationwide are aimed exclusively for this cause. "While it's good and necessary that national recognition and attention be given to victims of domestic violence," remarks Fava; "more awareness and action need to be generated on this level for our senior citizens and others with medical challenges." With only two other Sheriff's Departments in the state (Burlington and Camden counties) addressing this need for seniors, Sheriff Fava has taken his project one step further by including others with special medical needs or disabilities. "In certain circumstances, however, the emergency cell phone can literally mean the difference between life and death. At the very least, it should help provide people with an extra sense of security knowing they're just a push of a button away from help," said Fava.

"I also think it might give many people more peace of mind and freedom to leave their homes. Sheriff Fava asserts that the phones aren't only intended for life-threatening medical emergencies. A host of other situations exists which can potentially pose grave threats to the seniors or the disabled who cannot immediately reach wired phones. "I want them to feel safe and know that we, the police and fire community, really care. Furthermore, all those folks donating phones and helping to facilitate our project care about their wel fare, too! It's a real community effort." The donated cellular phones will be refurbished by members of Fava's Department with the help of a local establishment, Electronics, located in Clifton.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has established a regulation requiring that 911 calls be connected at no charge from all wireless phones, whether they have been activated for paid service or not. Senior citizens or others with special needs who are in need of such a lifeline and cannot otherwise afford a cell phone are asked to cal the LIFELINE hotline at 881-4618. With over 60,000 seniors in the county and no estimate of how many people with special requirements, requests will be prioritized according to need. "The LIFELINE Project will run until all requests are met or until we run out of donated cell phones," commented Sheriff Fava.

The Sheriff's Department will be delivering to each recipient a free cellular phone with 911 access only, a charger, instructions on how to use and maintain the phones, literature on general safety tips and a follow-up phone call to ensure the proper working order of the phone.
