SPORTS DIGEST Baseball NEW YORK Jaime Navarro, who had consecutive winning seasons for the Chicago Cubs after struggling with Milwaukee, went across town Wednesday and agreed to a $20 million, four-year contract with the White Sox. The White Sox moved quickly to shore up their pitching, signing Navarro just two days after Alex Fernandez left for a $35 million, five-year contract with the Florida Marlins. Chicago also re-signed reliever Tony Castillo, agreeing to a $2.35 million, two-year contract. The New York Yankees got a pitcher, too, giving a $5.45 million, three-year contract to left-landed reliever Mike Stanton. The; Yankees still are interested in Roger Clemens and David Wells, and in keeping John Wetteland.

Philadelphia added a pair of pitchers, giving Mark Portugal a $5 million, two-year contract and Mark Leiter a $4.3 million, two-year deal. In a deal announced Wednesday night, Mark McLemore agreed to a three-year contract with the Texas Rangers. Basketball Lisa Leslie, the captain and leading scorer of the gold medal U.S. Olympic women's basketball team, signed Wednesday to play in the new WN- BA, which begins its inaugural season next June. Football TEMPE, Boomer Esiason, angered over losing his starting job, skipped practice Wednesday and the Arizona Cardinals quarterback told his coach he wants to be released from his contract. The Amateur Athletic Union has been flooded with support since announcing it would restore medals stripped from Jim Thorpe because he played baseball for $2 a day. "It's been absolutely phenomenal," said Keith Noll, president of the Wisconsin AAU. Noll credits a history class project at Colfax High School for righting a wrong against Thorpe, who was named the world's greatest athlete for the first half of the 20th century by a panel of experts several decades ago. Thorpe played professional football and baseball. But Thorpe is best remembered for winning gold medals in the decathlon arid pentathlon in the 1912 Amateur Athletic Union national championships at Boston and the Olympic Games at Stockholm, Sweden.

He was stripped of those medals a year later when it was discovered that he had played semiprofessional baseball in 1909 and 1910. The International Olympic Committee restored Thorpe's amateur standing in 1982 and returned the medals to his family during a ceremony in the 1984 Olympic Games at Los Angeles. The AAU, whose national championships were the U.S. Olympic Trials until 1978, restored Thorpe's amateur standing in 1973. But the organization never returned the medals they took from him.

Colfax juniors Mark Ralph, Kyle Kraft and Bob Hoffman were poking around in a computer in October for a class project on American standouts when they discovered the AAU oversight.
