Leader-Post CLASSIFIED 522-SELL (7355) Saturday, June 28, 2008 8 DEATH NOTICES 8 DEATH NOTICES COLES-Mariorie Anna (nee Gienow) passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, June 23, 2008. Born January 4, 1921 on the homestead north west of Balgonie, SK, where she graduated from high school and began a career in banking. 1941 was courted by James Arthur Coles, R.C.A.F., and traveled to Ontario with him when he was called to serve overseas in WWII. During their long distance engagement, Marge worked chemical can plant in Welland, ON until Jim's return in 1945. They were married in Niagra Falls, ON on April 19, 1945 and soon after purchased a dairy farm north east of Balgonie.

Together they were honored as Master Dairy Farmers in the mid nineteen seventies. In retirement, their home remained on the family farm and they recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. Marge was an accomplished athlete at first base and home run hitter in the Ladies League Softball. In winter she excelled at ladies and mixed curling. Her later years gave Maior League Baseball and the National Hockey League an avid armchair coach.

Marge was a passionate 'giver' enriching the lives of others through her church, the Balgonie Ladies Community Club, the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and numerous community and provincial organizations. Her efforts were recognized with many awards. Marge was often referred to as the 'Matriarch' by her many extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents Samuel Gienow and Anna Mary Gienow (nee Paul); brother Howard Gienow; sister in Evelyn Gienow; brother-in-law John Hagley; sister-in-law Edna Clare, brother-in-law Jack Cruikshank and brother-in-law Lawrence Mauch. Left to sadly mourn Marge's passing are her loving husband Jim Coles; daughter Jane Broste-Warnes (Lorne); granddaughter Nicole Broste (Scott Campbell); great granddaughters Jordan and Samatha; son Samuel Coles (Janet); granddaughters Casey and Ali; sister Beatrice Hagley; sisters-in-law Evelyn Cruickshank and Vera Mauch; brother-inClare and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents Charlie and Millie (Amrud) Carey, her husband John, brothers Leroy and Arthur Carey, brothersin-law Ernie Dodds and Bob and sisters- in-law Lois Carey and Anna Cooper. Evelyn is survived by her daughter Karen, son Jim (Jackie), grandchildren Carli and Johnathan, sisters-in-law Annie Dodds and Colleen Carey, nieces and nephews and other family members and friends.

Evelyn was born in Dunblane, SK. where her parents owned a general store. She completed her Bachelor of. Household Science degree at the University of Saskatchewan in 1938 and her dietetic internship in Toronto the following year. After the sudden death of her father she returned to Dunblane to help in the store for six years.

She worked with the Extension Division of the University of Saskatchewan, travelling all over the province conduct youth training schools and other extension and education events. Evelyn returned to university for a diploma in education and briefly taught in Saskatoon. In 1949 she married John. They lived on the farm at Tugaske except for the time in Saskatoon while John finished his Diploma in Agriculture. After many years living on the farm they moved 'to town' but continued to work at the farm.

Evelyn spent the last couple of years at the Regency Manor. Evelyn will live on in the memories of her family and friends. She was always interested in people and could talk with anyone. Many will remember her warm and pleasant nature. Good food was always a priority.

Her angel food cakes made 'from scratch' were delicious. The cakes were a way to use extra eggs. At times she handled 30 dozen eggs a day. Another job she did was to carry the milk pails back and forth from 1 the barn to the house and run the cream separator morning and night. She worked very hard but somehow had the ability to make it look easy.

It was only on the few occasions that she was away and someone else had to try to fill her shoes that it became clear how much she accomplished. We wish to thank the staff at Regency Manor for the wonderful care! A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation Evelyn's memory may do so to Tugaske United Church, or to Central Butte Health Foundation (Regency Manor), Box 40, Central Butte, SOH OTO or to a charity of their choice. In living memory of Evelyn, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J.
