statements about the organiza- financial records. have to have somebody to De Marco said. finding that not so easy to raise money and pointing fingers at Nevertheless, Rumana said the organization has hired independ- ent auditor Robert Oliwa of Free- hold to review the books and financial statements provided by De Marco and Mec- ca. just want somebody to look at the books and tell us what the heck is going Ru- mana said. When the audit is completed in the coming weeks, it will be submitted to ELEC officials for their review, Rumana said.

ELEC Director Fred Her- rmann would not comment Wednesday on the specific financial situation, but said that political rivalries with- in county committees al- leviate their responsibility to correctly report financial hold- ings. a fact of political life that there is turnover in those com- mittees. From the perspective, they still have to file Herrmann said. An incorrect filing could carry a maximum fine of $6,000 for a first violation, Herrmann said. Meanwhile, De Marco said the financial data was submitted to Rumana on com- pact discs containing spread- sheets of the financial holdings and donors, which was a more accurate system than what Mecca had inherited when he became party chairman in 2002.

Mecca took over, he got his records in a ShopRite plastic De Marco said. Mecca was elected chairman after Murphy was convicted of bribery in 2001. Janice Sandri of Little Falls served as acting chair- person for the remainder of Mur- term. The last ELEC filing submitted by De Marco in June reported the PCRRO had $1, 273.63. was in the account was what was De Marco said.

Rumana said the amount he received was closer to $400, and the party use the mon- ey. To keep current fundraising efforts distinct from those of the previous party leadership, future campaign financing reports will be filed under the initials, Rumana said. The most recent fundraiser, held two weeks ago at The Brownstone in Paterson, would bring the coffers to nearly $50,000, and they would be reported by the next filing deadline on Oct. 15. Even if the cash holdings improve to that extent, they will still pale in comparison to the Passaic County Democra- tic war chest of $415, 849.
