Monday, February 2, 2004 Sports Leader-Post C3 REGINA 1, MOOSE JAW 0 (OT) OBITUARY Sugar Jim will always be linked with Rocket saved Richard from certain grievous injury. The Rocket was tripped by a Bruin and sent sliding toward the Boston net, which in those days was anchored almost immovably to the ice. It just occurred to me that I couldnt let Maurice crash into the goalpost," Henry recalled four years ago upon the death of Richard. So I slid out and let his body hit mine, to protect him. He got up and thanked me, as did a few others on the ice.

It was the greatest ovation I ever had in Montreal." And now, with a hockey game and the season on the line, Richard rumbled from the Canadiens dressing room with five minutes remaining in regulation time, six stitches crudely sewn into his left brow, blood trailing down his cheek. Canadiens coach Dick Irvin tapped Richard on the back, sending him onto the ice. His linemate, Elmer Lach, would recall, Rocket was squinting at the scoreboard. It was obvious he couldnt read it, so I told him the score was still 1-1." Richard scored 82 playoff goals during his career, dozens of them spectacular efforts. Now, with 3 12 minutes left in the game and the puck on his stick, passed there by captain Butch Bouchard, he was a runaway freight train even if his glazed eyes blurred his destination.

Richard swept through the Bruins like a winter wind threading between skyscrapers, unable to see linemates Lach or Toe Blake to pass the puck. He rushed end to end and finally eluded defenceman Bill Quackenbush, who had knocked him cold, before cutting across the ice to snap an ankle-high shot past Henrys flailing glove. Billy Reay scored into an empty Bruins net for insurance, eliminating Boston and sending the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup final. In an anticlimax, they would lose four straight games to the Detroit Red Wings. There was not the processional handshake that follows a series today, but Hemy and Richard did meet briefly on the ice.

In one of hockeys most compelling photos, the goalie is bowed in exhaustion, seemingly in reverence, his eyes a pulpy black; Richards brow is heavily bandaged, and blood trails to curl beneath his chin. Moments later, the Rocket went into convulsions in the Canadiens dressing room, in shock before he was sedated. Predeceased by his wife and a brother, Henry is survived by a son, two granddaughters, four great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind indelible memories of the Rockets most dramatic goal, one that defined not just two NHL stars, but also the magical era in which they shone. Montreal Gazette By DAVE STUBBS CanWest News Service MONTREAL On the rink of the great beyond, Sugar Jim Henry is lacing up his skates today with Maurice (Rocket) Richard, the late Montreal Canadiens legend, and the two men are turning lazy circles on the ice, reminiscing.

Two warhorses of the National Hockey Leagues six-team era share a 1952 playoff goal that a half-century later still glistens in the mist of hockey lore. It likely was the greatest goal in the Rockets ethereal career; it was a failed save for which Sugar Jim will always be remembered, no matter the thousands of pucks he stopped. Theirs is a moment that will be frozen forever in perhaps hockeys most compelling photo, one that again comes to light following the death in Winnipeg last week of Sugar Jim Henry. He was 83. Richards splendid goal was also Henrys defining moment.

In time, Sugar Jim came to embrace it, and how he loved that his name and the Rockets were spoken in the same breath, joined by a puck that slipped past him into hockey legend. Samuel James Henry was born in Winnipeg on Oct. 23, 1920, given his nickname by neighbourhood girls who took to dipping the toddlers pacifier in a sugar bowl. He would grow sweet, too, in the junior and senior nets of the Winnipeg Lombards, Brandon Elks and Regina Rangers, winning an Allan Cup national senior title with Regina in 1941. Henry saw action for the NHLs New York Rangers before and after his war service, played for the Chicago Black Hawks in 194849, and tread water in the minor-pro backwaters of New Haven, Kansas City, Omaha and Indianapolis before landing with the Boston Bruins in 1951-52.

It was at the Montreal Forum on April 8, 1952, in the seventh and deciding Stanley Cup semifinal game that playoff season, that Sugar Jim Henry and Rocket Richard would forge a bond that linked them the rest of their days. Staggering out of the Canadiens dressing room in the dying minutes, the game then tied 1-1, came Richard concussed and bloodied in the second period and now driven only by instinct, having been knocked colder than a bailiffs heart, according to one newspaper report. Shivery-legged in the Bruins goal was Henry, his two eyes blackened by his broken nose suffered one game earlier. Bostons trainer had spent the day applying hot and cold towels to reduce the swelling around his eyes. Earlier in the season, Henry had Moose Jaw Hmes-Herald Photo Pats goalie Dustin Slade sparkled in Saturdays 1 -0 victory over the Warriors.

We havent had a lot of success there so it's great to see (the players) get rewarded for putting in that kind of ef-fort. They have a great hockey team," said of the Warriors. They're 'definitely a contender so to show we can play with them should do a lot for -our confidence and give us something to build on. The War- lately. The Warriors get another shot at Regina tonight when the teams play a makeup game at the Agridome. The contest was originally scheduled for Friday but it had to be postponed due to blizzard conditions. (Tonight) its time for payback, Brodeur told the Moose Jaw Times-Her-ald. We need to come out harder.

We need to get some more traffic at Slade. Hes a good quick little goalie, but we need to go to the net And we need to hit more. That and bury our chances. The game was a relatively quiet affair by Moose Jaw-Regina standards, with both sides forgoing some of the usual extracurricular activity. The only fight of the contest came when Warriors heavyweight Ken Patza-ck dropped the gloves with Reginas Britt Dougherty just 329 into the game.

After that, there were just 16 minutes in penalties, eight per side. Theres a lot on the line for both teams," noted Mercier.
