He set out to make his first feature film, knew it had to be cheap and doable, and came up with the idea of setting the entire film in a 14-foot cube. The result is a dazzling psychological thriller called, predictably enough, "Cube." "A lot of the writing process came down to figuring out how to sustain a film that long in that kind of space," Natali said last week from Los Angeles, where, he is doing publicity for the film.

"The limitation of the film forced us to be much more intelligent and creative than if we had unlimited resources. The limitations really defined the film." The result is a Kafka-esque tale that finds six people plucked from their daily existence and dropped into a giant cube-like prison. Each room is a cube, with six cube for each dramatic sequence. Sometimes the cube was shot in long lens, other times in wide lens or close up. Sometimes it was lit with blue light, other times with green or red.

This creates the impression that the six characters were mov- 1 ing through a maze of different cubes, Natali said. Natali may be only 28, but he learned early how to get a lot out of a little. He grew up in Toronto and got hooked on film at age 11, after what he has described as having "a religious experience" while watching "Star Wars" for the first time. He picked up a Super 8, and with a friend, Andre Bejilic, made his first short film, called "Dark Force," which used the basement of an apartment building, complete with wires and pipes, as the setting for a space ship. He continued to make homemade short films during his teens, then enrolled as a film student at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute.

He left after a year and a half to pursue work as a storyboard artist. "I worked on a lot of Saturday morning cartoon stuff," Natali said. "They would give you a script and tell you to block it out in drawings, so I really learned about classical narrative storytelling, how to use pictures to tell a story." While working as a storyboard artist, Natali saved enough to make several short films, which eventually gained him a place in the prestigious Canadian Film Centre's Resident Program. While there, he and his writing partner, Bijelic, proposed their script for "Cube" as a feature, and the Centre agreed to back it. doors.

Each door leads to another cube, and that cube can mean life or death. The six have to find a way out, but to do that they have to figure out the logic behind the cube, and come to terms with various personality conflicts among themselves. The film has received critical acclaim for its simple story structure, inventive camera work, and lighting. Natali is the first to admit that it was a chancy venture setting a whole film in what amounted to one set. But he took comfort in knowing that it had been done once before by Alfred Hitchcock.

"The model for 'Cube' was Natali said of the classic 1944 film. "That was the film that really inspired me Hitchcock was amazing. He shot the whole film inside a lifeboat, no one even stands up during the film and yet you always know what is happening. It's suspense-ful." "Cube" was made for an astonishingly low $350,000 in Canadian dollars, a figure that would not pay the catering bills on a film like "Titanic" or "Saving Private Ryan."
