The 70 year old creator of Maggie and Jiggs in "Kinging Up Father" was admitted to St. John's hospital in nearby Santa Monica early Friday. He died of a heart attack, his physician reported. McManus and his invalid widow, Florence, resided in Beverly Hills for 25 years after the affable Irish man left New York where his car toons brought him international recognition. Born in St.

Louis, in 1884, McManus went to work as a floor sweeper in the old St. Louis Re publican's art department after a school teacher objected to his classroom doodling. The doodling led to art work on the Republic where he created "Let George Do It" in 1800. Winnings from a 5100 bet on a 30 to 1 shot in a horse race led him to New York in 1904. There he created "Panhandle Pete," "The Newlyweds and Their Baby" and "Rosie's Beau."
