WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9. 1997 PM THE RECORD YT-5 news notes i stymie v. i ''v. I market for religious music and song. After the runaway success of "Faith of Our Fathers" Ireland's biggest-selling album of last year, with 180,000 units sold to date the Benedictine Monks of Glenstal Abbey have made their solo debut in the Irish top 10 with "Gregorian Chants." The monks contributed four tracks to "Faith of Our Fathers," which was subtitled "Classic Religious Anthems of Ireland," featured Frank Patterson and Regina Nathan, and was shot for a long-form video at a concert at Dublin's Point Theatre.

"Gregorian Chants," recorded at Glenstal Abbey, County Limerick, with the Senior Boys' Schola (a choir from the abbey's public school), are sung in Irish, English, and Latin and cover a "whole range of moods," according to producer Brian Mclvor. Chants are sung every day by the Glenstal community, and the ones on the album are mainly for the period from Lent to Easter. "What is unique, to our knowledge, on this album," says Mclvor, "is that it includes improvised organ pieces as interludes. We think it should appeal right across the board firstly to people with an Irish connection, then to those interested in Celtic spirituality and world music." FUNK REUNION Grand Funk Railroad is launching its reunion world tour with a three-city concert event to benefit the Bosnian-American Relief Fund. The concerts start April 20 at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, to be followed by shows April 25 at the Beacon Theatre in New York and May 2 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

For the first time in two decades, the band's original lineup guitaristvocalist Mark Farner, drummervocalist Don Brewer, and bassist Mel Schacher will be reunited. CLACKING DOWN You read a lot about bootleg recordings albums put out by underground manufacturers that feature live and studio material the regular record companies don't release. Well, those days could be over. The Recording Industry Association of America has used new copyright laws to seize hundreds of thousands of illegal discs in the past two years. Those seizures seriously hurt bootleggers but didn't knock them out.

That may have changed. Reports are circulating about a major sting operation in Florida a couple of weeks ago in which a former bootleg maker joined federal authorities to help catch some of the biggest manufacturers and distributors (and copyright violators) in the world. Word is that bootleggers worldwide were invited to Florida, treated to a day at Disney World, then arrested on federal charges. The whole incident has sent a resounding shudder through the underground music industry, with predictions that fans have seen the last of this "golden era" of easy access to the discs, which are legal in some countries, illegal in others. The association acknowledged that a major event happened in Florida but has declined to release details.

A statement will be issued soon, a spokeswoman promised. The bootlegging crackdown hasn't stopped the stereo mix of "Pet Sounds" from remaining a hot item reportedly copied directly off the promo CDs that Capitol sent out last year. MEAN TUNES If you need further proof that Billy Corgan can write a mean tune, check out "Billy's Home Demos," a bootleg with embryonic versions of many Smashing Pumpkins songs from the "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" and "The Aeroplane Flies High" sets. The solo acoustic version of "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" is particularly fine. SITTING PRETTY Tonl Braxton shall not be moved.

At least, not from the top of the adult contemporary chart, where "Un-Break My Heart" rules for a 14th week. That makes the LaFace single TONI BRAXTON Topping the chart CHANTING MONKS Irish indies have discovered a hitherto-untapped domestic BILLY CORGAN "Home Demos" the second-longest running AC chart-topper in history, second only to Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me." When Braxton hit her 13th week, she was tied with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" as well as Eric Clapton's "Change the World." 1 o)0 .1 mm mm mm i J)iujnifi)s PASSAIC COUNTY wants you to.
