A chemical, investigators said; today, was used to start a fire last night in the Grand Opera house, endangering the lives of 1,800 persons attendiflg a motion picture show. One man was burned and a woman trampled In confusion that followed the fire.

Policemen and firemen prevented a serioud panic. A substance with a phosphorus base was used by the incendiaries, investigators said; Fragments of a glass jar" were found Sear the spot where the fire started. Because of Jts open shop policy the theatre was damaged by a bomb in April, 1930, police said. Two men who sat in the seventh row of the theatre were seen to leave just before the fire The fire broke out in that row and burned several seats. Women screamed and there was a rush for exits as flames were first noticed.

MaryS, Elk county, Secretary of Highways Sam Lewis has announced. This section extends southeast from Johnsonburg, about half way to St. Marys and has been under construction since early in May. The contract was awarded to H. N.

McNutt, of Clarion, on May 2, this year at 38, from Federal aid funds. The remaining half, connecting with St. Marys, will be completed about September 20 highway engineers estimate, after which date the entire route will be opened to traffic. This improvement will not only serve a local community between John sonburg and St. Marys, but will provide a direct connection between the Buffalo Pittsburgh highway and U.

S. Route 120,. with a saving of about eight miles in distance for through traffic between these points which hitherto followed the circuitous route by way of Ridgway.
