Elimbeth Cromwell. Cromwell legend? are so ubiqnitom in England that it is a real relief to hi3 one's hand upon a bit of solid fact lating either to the protector or bis family. Elizabeth, the second and vorite daughter of Cromwell, married John Glaypole of Nurthborough, and appears to have spent a considerable portion of her 12 years of wedded life in his substantial fourteenth century house. Garlyle asserts Elizabeth Claypole to have been "a graceful, brave and amiable woman," and of her home that it is "now into a farmhouse." The second statement is not terized by his usual accuracy, and the first probably needs for Elizabeth Claypole is credited with come turning of her bead over her ther's elevation, and at a wedding feast is reported to have exclaimed, when asked why the wives orthe major generals were absent, "I'll warrant you, washing their dishes at home, as they used to do." Not a particularly "amiable" sentence that. Cromwell seems to have had some insight of her little weakness.

"Tell her," he wrote once, "to heed of a departing heart and of being cozened with worldly vanities and worldly pany, which, I doubt, she is too subject to." It is agreed by most authorities that John Glaypole himself was little enough of a Puritan, but let it stand to his credit that, after Oliver died, he provided a haven for his widow for the rest of her life in this manor Cincinnati Commercial Tribune. Barbers on the Ocean. One of the most important persons on board a well equipped ocean liner is the barber. If he is gifted with a good ness instinct, be is in a position to make a good deal of money. To the average man shaving while at HOR is a difficult and hazardous tion.

He therefore calls into requisition the services of the ship's barber, a man who by long training is qualified to wield the razor with skill and safety, no matter how much the vessel rolls or pitches. He is always one of the most heavily "tipped" officials on the ship. If the ship travels on a route with interesting ports of call, the 6hip's barber makes it his business to lay in a stock of native knickknacks and curios of all kinds. The inexperienced traveler is rally a little suspicions of the native peddlers who swarm on board with their wares directly the ship is at anchor. He prefers to purchase his mementos of foreign travel of the barber, ing bought his stook at wholesale rates, is able to retail the various articles to passengers at prices little if at all er than those charged by the native Goldsmith's Actor.

Lord Nugent was one evening very eloquent to Goldsmith in praise of M. (a bad actor). "But, my lord," eaid Goldsmith, "you must allow he treads the stage very waddles." dles?" said Lord Nugent. "Yes, he dles like a goose. Why, yon know we call him Goose "Well, and then, you know, when he endeavors to press strong passion he bellows." lows?" said Lord Nugent.

"To be sure he like a bull. Why, we call him Bull "Well, then," tinued Goldsmith, pursning his umph, "his voice breaks and he croaks." "Croaks?" said Lord Nugent. "Why, the fellow croaks like a frog. We call him Frog M. But M.

is a good aotor." "Why, yes," said Goldsmith, ring the goose, and the bull, and the frog, and a few other things I could mention, and not wishing to speak ill of ray neighbors, I will allow M. is a good of the Earl of Nugent." Tlie Sea Gall and the Fisherman, In the fishing village of Aachmithie (the Musseloraig of Scott's you may frequently witness sea gulls flying into the houses of the fishermen and partaking of food their hands. One of these sea birds was in the habit of staying in a fisherman's house all the year round except at the breeding season, when it left. Quite cently, while the gull was away, the fisherman his home from Anchmitbie to Arbroath (the Fairport of Scott's distant some miles from the former place, taking up his residence in South street of broath. The fisherman never expected to see his old friend the gnll again.

It was therefore much' to bis astonishment that he beheld a fortnight later the sea bird come walking into his new dence with stately steps to resame his old familiarities and household ways with his Lady. The Better Drawer. "Your money or your life!" cried the robber. "Ha, ha!" laughed the artist, and drew a pistol. The artist had no ey, and, according to the critics, not much life, but that was not why ho laughed.

He laughed because he longed to the school which draws ly and boldly rather than the school which draws laboriously, with great attention to Journal. London Landlords. There is perhaps no tenant who is so completely at the mercy of his landlord as the occupier of a house in London which belongs to one of the great ground landlords. He is an absolute prisoner within the four corners of his lease. The slightest deviation is panied with pains and penalties, but, on the other hand, the landlord reserves all kinds of privileges to himself.

Very little furniture is used in the bedrooms of Turkish houses. Barely is a chair seen in any of them. A few mats adorn the room, and the bed is stretched on the floor. He was endeavoring to explain the term "booking" as applied to oar way system. "Now," he was saying, "can any of you tell me the name of the offioe at which railway tickets are sold?" "The booking office," replied one of the lads. "Bight," responded the teacher. At this moment his eye fell on a small boy at the end of the class, who was evidently paying very little tion to what was said. "Did yon hear that, Dowser?" be "Wot, sir?" asked that youth cently.

"As I thought, yon were not ing. We will suppose that your father decided to have a day's holiday and visit the seaside. What would he have to do before he could take his seat in the train?" Without a moment's thought the youngster electrified his teacher by plying, "Pawn his Standard. An Odd Collection. One of the most remarkable tions of souvenirs ever made is a tion of male opera hats by one of the actresses of a London company.

She owns no fewer than 216 of these cles, for it was her whim to make every young man who was intrqduced to her give her bis opera hat as a souvenir. She not only keeps them in their tine condition, but converts them into all sorts of other things, such as graph frames, workbaskets, and some are even used for the purpose of holding flowerpots. Golden Silence. A man who once met Ralph Waldo Emerson at the honse of a friend tells of the characteristic way in which the Concord philosopher blunted the edge of a compliment. "Oh, Mr.

Emerson," said a yonng woman of the party, "it must be so lightful to know that people all over the country are grateful for the things you have said!" "Thank you," said Emerson slowly, "but it is for some of the things I have not said that I feel most grateful." Mortgage Foreclosure Sale.
