(Across from Northgatc) LONEYS GOLF shop 545-8000 By ton Bentley ready to tale a whirl at Indy Vancouver's Ross Bentley got some good news and some bad news Wednesday. The good news is, the doctors have given me clearance to get into the car (today) and drive," Bentley said from his Indianapolis apartment. I'm healing up better than expected, so they gave me the go-ahead.

The bad news is, it was a bad day for my team (the Dale Coyne Racing team). Both my teammates (Robbie Buhl and Eric Bachelart) crashed and pretty much wrote off their cars. While that news bothered Bentley, the good news was far and away more important to him. It means he will once again get a chance to qualify for the May 30 Indianapolis 500. Bentley.

36, sustained first- and second-degree bums to his hands, neck and face Friday when a fuel regulator split and spewed burning methanol fuel into the cockpit of his car hile he was on the track. The invisible flames melted the wiring in the cockpit along with the dash and the seat belts. They also burned Bentley, who immediately stopped his 1992 Lola Buick and dived out on to the track. It was like walking into a blast furnace, said Bentley, who received treatment from track officials and members of various teams along pit road. Somebody said methanol burns at 2,000 degrees.

Well, now I believe them. Bentley spent two days in hospital and was told by doctors that hed be out of action for two to three weeks. That meant he would miss the chance to qualify for his first Indy 500. Then they told him he needed 10 days. Then it was a week.

On Wednesday, they told him he was ready to go racing today. Bentley still has feeling in his damaged fingers, which suffered deep second-degree burns. His hands will be re-bandaged today with wraps which fit inside his gloves. His neck, raw in two areas due to second-degree burns, is still bandaged. His face is covered with first-degree burns, with second-degree burns on his nose and eyelids.

The pain will no doubt be something with which Bentley has to deal today, but he doesnt plan to dwell on it or on the memory of his last stint in the car. The first couple of laps, I'll probably be thinking, I hope this thing doesnt catch fire, he said. Itll be in the back of my mind, but hopefully after a half-dozen laps or so Ill be thinking only about making the car go as fast as it possibly can. Before the incident, Bentleys best four-lap average speed was 209.283 miles per hour. The slowest average among the 26 drivers who qualified last weekend was Mark Smiths 214.356.

That means Bentley has some work to do to make the 33-car field in this weekend's final two days of qualifying. Its going to be really difficult, admitted Bentley, who bounced off the wall May 12 in practice. With this and blowing an engine last week and all the other problems we've had, were seven or eight days behind schedule. It's going to be really tough to make up for that in a day and a half. JL AROUND THE TRACKS: At Indy, the big news of the week was the retirement of legend A J.

Foyt on Saturday. A four-time winner at Indy, the 58-year-old Foyt had started 35 consecutive 500s. The pole-sitter this time around is Arie Luyendyk, who qualified Saturday with an average speed of 223.967 mph. Scott Goodyear of Newmarket, Ont will start from the inside of the second row, while Torontos Paul Tracy is on the inside of Row 3 Geoff Bodine held off Ernie Irvan and Ricky Rudd to win Sundays Save Mart 300 NASCAR race at the Sears Point road course in Sonoma, Calif. After winning, Bodine took a backwards victory lap to honor the late Alan Kulwicki, who died in a plane crash April 1.

Bodine bought Kulwickis team last week. Dale Earnhardt, who finished sixth, took over the Winston Cup points lead from Rusty Wallace. Earnhardt has 1,526 to Wallace's 1,506 heading into the Coca-Cola 600, May 30 in Charlotte, N.C, The next Formula 1 stop is the Monaco Grand Prix, Sunday in Monte Carlo. Hodson missed the next three games with a shoulder injury.

It was accidental, Harding said, I have nothing against Kevin. I have nothing but praise for him. He and I were racing for a loose puck. He dove and I dove. I tried to prevent our heads from colliding and we caught shoulders.

Peterborough and Sault Ste. Marie meet today (5:30 p.m., TSN) to conclude round-robin play. The winner earns a bye into the final. Two valuable members of the Petes sat out Wednesdays practice. Defenceman Brent Tully watched from the stands.

His face and especially his nose was badly swollen, thanks to a hard bodycheck from Swift Currents Dean McAmmond on Tuesday. Centre Cory Stillman suffered a bruised left shoulder in Tuesdays third period. Stillmans status is day-to-day, according to Petes head coach and general manager Dick Todd. Tully, who also received a three-stitch cut below his lower lip, is expected to play. We think hell be OK, said Todd, fending off an inquiry as to whether Tully has a broken nose.

-Todays medical bulletin pertains to Todd Holt. The Swift Current Broncos right winger suffered a bruised collarbone and strained neck muscles during Wednesdays 4-3 Memorial Cup loss to the QMJHLs Laval Titan. Holt left the game at 14:24 of the second period. He did not return. Its nothing big, just minor, Holt said after X-rays determined that nothing was broken.

Ill be in there Friday. The WHL champs play a third-place tiebreaker tomorrow against either Laval or the host Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. A Quebec players stick came up and hit me in the neck, Holt said. I don't think he meant to do it.

Semchuk is the second Bisons football player to test positive in the last five months. In December, slotback Billy Johanson tested positive for nandrolone and was suspended for four years after being caught in a random test. Walter McKee, athletic director at the University of Manitoba, said counselling services would be made available to Semchuk should he continue his education at the university.
