ENTERTAINMENT E5 TL ESDAY, MAY 26. 2009 BREAKING NEWS: VANC0LATRSUX.COM PREVIEW What should Internet star Susan Boyle sing next? Shirley Jones: No regrets, and still going strong at 75 BY BART JACKSON VANCOUVER SUN official song of Liverpool's soccer (er, football) club. Some have suggested it's time Boyle added an American ditty to her international fare. Her first outing featured I Dreamed a Dream from French composer Claude-Michel Schonberg (libretto by Alain Boublil). We'd like to see her stick with British fare, and would love to hear her version of Who Knows Where the Time Goes, Sandy 11 Susan Boyle The lovely thing about him is that he had done Music Man on Broadway for three years.

A lot of times when people have done a role on Broadway and they come out to the film and work with other people, the usual line is, We did it this He did none of that." Burt Lancaster: Elmer Gantry, I960 "He was my mentor. Burt is the one who saw me in The Big Slide and called me in San Francisco. I was doing a nightclub act with Jack Cassidy. He said, 'Have you ever read the Sinclair Lewis novel Elmer Gantry? I said, He said, 'Go get it and come down next week, I would like you to have a meeting with our writer-director Richard Brooks for the part of Jimmy Stewart: Two Rode Together, (1961) and The Cheyenne Social Club, (1970). "He was such a consummate actor.

I remember I had a scene to do with him one day and I said, 'I'm not sure of the words, Jimmy, they are escaping me He said, Never mind, just make them up as you go Los Angeles Times What song should Susan Boyle per-forminthefinalsof Britain 's Got Talent? The Internet singing sensation recovered nicely Sunday night after a shaky start to Memory, from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cars. Her first notes were a tad sour, but her final notes were spot-on and stunning. Still, some commentators say everybody's favourite Scottish spinster chose the wrong song, and that contributed to her initial uncertainty. Sure she needs an anthemic heart-raiser that's the staple for all the latter-day amateur hours on reality TV. Subtlety just doesn't make it on any of the Idol clones or Britain 's Got Talent.

Over at the Huffington Post, contributor Michael Russnow suggests Boyle try Rodgers and Hammerstein on for size in her next outing: He names YoullNever Walk Alone ox If I Loved You from Carousel and Climb Every Mountain from The Sound of Music. The first tune he mentions has long been a favourite in the U.K. as the Denny's achingly beautiful ballad. But perhaps heartbreak doesn't provide the uplifting denouement required by such reality shows. Tears of joy are okay, but it's possible audiences don't want to be reduced to blubbering remembrances of things past.

bjacksonvancouversun.com UNIQUE LIVES EXPERIENCES: SHIRLEY JONES Tonight, 7:30 p.m. OrpheumTheatre Tickets fromTicketmaster BY SUSAN KING Shirley Jones does wholesome as well as anybody in show business (with the possible exception of Doris Day). She played the loving mom Shirley Partridge in the 1970-74 musical sitcom The Partridge Family and the lovable girl next door in such movie musicals as Oklahoma and Carousel. But there's another side to her career: an actress of strong dramatic mettle willing to take risky roles. She received glowing reviews as a boozer in a 1956 Playhouse 90 drama The Big Slide, and she won a supporting actress Academy Award for her role as prostitute Lulu Bains in 1960's Elmer Gantry with Burt Lancaster.

"Those were great roles," says Jones, who will be at the Orpheum Theatre tonight as part of the Unique Lives Experiences speakers series. "The problem with Partridge though it was great for me and gave me an opportunity to stay home and raise my kids when my agents came to me and presented it to me, they said if you do a series and it becomes a hit show, you will be that character for the rest of your life and your movie career will go into the toilet, which is what happened. But I have no regrets." So it shouldn't come as a big surprise that in an upcoming episode of the drama series The Cleaner scheduled to air this summer, Jones, now 75, plays an alcoholic and even apparently does a semi-nude scene. 0 What do you think?
