0-10 THE RECORD a WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 1993 to AMhomiy meeds sSxm mae to take charge BOYS was the Friars' 12th championship in the last 14 years, including nine straight before Marist upset them in the semifinals last year. "I think it's a great thing for Billy," Hurley said. "He may not start, but if you look at every big game we played this year, he was in there at the end." Lovett appeared to accept the award for all the sixth men out there. "It tells you one thing," he said after playing what he called the best game of his career. "Never underestimate somebody coming off the bench, whether he's the sixth guy or the last man, because you don't know who they are." St.

Augustine (of Richland) ry GREGORY SCKUTTA I Record Stall Writer 1 ELIZABETH It's not every day that a non-starter is named the Most Valuable Player in a State championship basketball game. But ask St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley and he'll tell you Billy Lovett is no ordinary sixth man. The junior guard proved that Tuesday night at Elizabeth High School when he came on tne bench to score 18 points and spark the Friars to a convincing 55-28 victory over St. Augustine in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Parochial boys basketball championship.

It ond half, thejl'd just hold onto the ball so they'd be in the game in the fourth quarter. Billy made the key defensive plays that kept them out of their half-court. "He came out with the attitude that we'll attack them in the second half," Hurley said. "He took more chances. Those steals in the third quarter were big because they didn't take any time off the clock and we got points." "I was just happy that I could step up and help the team," Lovett said.

"This is what it comes down to. All I wanted to do was win a state championship." He may get another chance next year as well. found out who Lovett was in the third quarter when he scored 14 of the Friars' 19 points during a 19-4 run. In one sequence early in the quarter, Lovett scored seven points in less than 20 seconds, starting with a short jumper from the paint for a 15-13 St. Anthony lead.

He then stole the inbounds pass and was fouled going in for the layup for a three-point play. Finally, he picked the pocket of a St. Augustine player and went in uncontested for a layup and an 18-13 St. Anthony lead. fu Senior Mark Donnelly scored 17 points and captured game Most Valuable player honors for the Iirington shocks Shawnee "We came in wanting to shorten the game," Rodio said. "When you play St Anthony you have to control the tempo, control Jalil Roberts, two points, keep Roshown McLeod off the boards, and beat their press. And we did that for the first half and the first couple of minutes of the third quarter. Lovett was the key to their turnaround." McLeod had 10 points and Ja-mar Curry added eight for the Friars. Matt Miles led St.

Augustine with 12 points, but no other player scored more than four for the Hermits. "Billy was the man tonight," Hurley said. "We knew that if they got into their half-court in the sec spills Egg By RICH HALEY Special to The Record WEST LONG BRANCH -Newark West Side used a strong inside game and sterling performances from Denise Anthony and Sabriya Mitchell to pull off a stunning 60-50 victory over Egg Harbor on Tuesday in the New Jersey State Interschoastic Athletic Association Group 3 championship game at Monmouth College. The State championship was the first for West Side (27-3) and gave them a berth in the Tournament of Champions, which gets under way tonight at Monmouth. Egg Harbor (26-4) has been ranked No.

1 all season and suffered its first loss to a team from New Jersey. Egg Harbor won the Group 3 title in 1992 and advanced all the way to the Tournament of Champions final, where the Eagles fell to St Peter's of New Brunswick. Mitchell, a 5-foot-4 senior point guard, scored 15 points and handed out seven assists to earn the game's Most Valuable Player award. She controlled the tempo of the game and was a big factor in keeping Egg Harbor from putting together a run. Mitchell, held scoreless in the first quarter, scored 11 points in the second quarter and nine more in the third and finished with 25 points.

Linden repeats WEST LONG BRANCH Repeating as State champions is a tough thing to do in high school basketball. But when you have players like Tamecka Dixon, Si-mone Gilliam, and Raqia Johnson, it gets a little easier. The stellar trio carried Linden to a 71-55 victory over East Brunswick Tuesday the Group 4 final at Monmouth College. The title was the second straight for Linden, which plays Mahwah in the opening round of the Tournament of Champions tonight at 8 o'clock at Monmouth. Trailing 46-42, Abdullah scored seven of his 16 points as the Blue Middle dethrones Hillside game," St. Augustine coach Paul Rodio said. "He was around for every key play in the third quarter." The game started at a mind-numbing pace as St. Augustine slowed the tempo to a crawl.

On their first possession, the Hermits held the ball for nearly two minutes but failed to get a shot off as St. Anthony stole the ball. The Friars' first six points came off steals. St. Augustine didn't score its first points of the game, on its third shot, until there was one second left in the quarter.
