Sir Henry Clinton had perceived from the appearances on his flanks and rear on the 27th, that the American army was in his nighborhood, and had therefore changed the order of his march. The whole baggage was placed under the care of general Knyphausen, while tne strength and flower of his array, entirely unincumbered, formed the rear division, under the particular command of lord Cornwallis, which lie accompanied in person. To avoid pressing on general Knyphausen, Cornwallis remained on his ground until about eight, and then descending from the heights of Freehold, into a plain of about three miles in extent, took up his line of march in rear of the tront division. Be it enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey, That it shall be lawful for any number of inhabitants ofa tewnship, or an; one or more towuships in any county in this state, not lets than twenty of such inhabitants of each township, each of whom Bhall be a freeholder, to form an association under this act to protect the inhabitants thereof and punish the lawless; in forming such association for tbe purpose ot this act, may sign and execute a certificate under their hands and seals properly acknowledged before auy officer-authorized to of deeds by this state, and file tbe same iu the office of the clerk of the county in which any gui association proposes to form in which certificate shall be set forth tbe name or title of the said association, and the general objects thereof, the number of directors thereof, which shall not be than nine nor more than fifteen, the names of tbe officers and directors who shall be elected for the first year of theexisteuceof auy nuch association. 2. And be it enacted, at upon the makingand filing of such certificate by such association, the said association, and such other peisousas may be associated with them, are hereby con-tituted a body politic and corporate in law, by atever name they shall assume, and by such name shall havesucceesioo aud continuance, aud be capable in law of sneing and being sued, defending and being defended in aU courts and places whatever, and may have and use a common seal, aud alter aud renew the same at pleasure, and by their name as aforesaid, and under their common 8al, may make enter into, execute and enforce any contracts or agreements relating, touching or concerning tbe objects of said corporation. 3. That every suit of a civil nature at law, where the debt, balance, other matter in dispute, does not exceed, exclusive of corts, the sum or value of two hundred dollars, shall be at.d hereby is made cognizable in any district court of this state, in the cities where they may be established to hear, try aud determine the same according to law, although the cause of action did not arise in said city said district courts hall have jurisdiction, exclusive of all otbee courts whatsoever, except the circuit court of the county or counties wherein said district may be established, in all cases arising under this act, where tbe party defendant resides within tbe corporate limits of tbe city wherein said court er courts shall be established; provided always, that this act shall not extend to any action of replevin, slander, trespass for assault, battery or imprisonment, nor to any action wherein the title to any lauds, tenements, hereditaments or other real estate shall or may in anywise come in question.

2. And be it enacted, That section seven of the act to which this a supplement, and which reads as follows: 7. And be it enacted. That whenever the amonnt really due or recoverable upon any bond, bill, note or other contract in writing, does not exceed, exclusive of costs, the turn or value of one hundred dollars at the time when the snit is instituted, such amount shall bo recoverable in said district conrts, without regard to any kind of penalty expressed therein, in the same manner as any other debt or other demand of two hundred dollars or is made recoverable by this act," be and the same is hereby amended, so as to readjas follows: 7. And be it enacted.

That whenever the amount really due or recoverable upon aoy bond, bill, note, or other contract in writing, does not exceed, exclaeive of costs, the sum cr value of two hundred dollars at the time when the suit is instituted, such amount shall be recoverable in said district court, without regard to any kind of penalty expressed therein, in the same manner as any other debt or demand of two hundred dollars or under made recoverable by this act. Z. And be it enacted. That section twenty-nine of the act to which this is a supplement, and which reads as follows: "29. And be it enacted.

That if any defendant neglect or refuse to deliver a copy of his or her account or state of demand against such plaintiff, he or she shall forever thereafter be precluded from having or maintaining any action for such account or demand, or from setting oil the same in any future suit; provided always, that where the balance found to be due to such defendaut exceeds the sum of one hundred dollars, then the said defendaut shall not be precluded from recovering his er her account or demand against such plaintiff, auy other court of record having cognizance of the Graded Schools, Red Bane.
