FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 1994 TELEVISION THE RECORD S-17 NEWS AND NOTES MORE BARNEY' The Lyons Group, which produces "Bamey," has agreed on terms for a third PBS season for the purple one. The new contract calls for 20 half-hour episodes of the popular preschool program as well as two one-hour specials. In addition, PBS will undertake its first publishing venture with a "Barney" book, subject and audience to be determined, reports Kathy Quattrone, vice president of PBS programming. Quattrone said the Lyons Group has guaranteed that PBS will recoup its investment, which for the new season will amount to $1.7 million. That revenue will come from the sale of videotapes, audio tapes, and international rights to the program.

The network will see no revenue from any of the merchandising spinoffs. "They make the case, quite appropriately," says Quattrone, "that Barney had a life before PBS." FROM NEWS SERVICE REPORTS Didion and John Gregory Dunne, grabbed him because "it's a high-pedigree project and it gets into some big ideas government using its awesome power for personal gain and motive. That's an interesting subject. I think every day we see examples of it." HEAD TO HEAD Ric Flair and Sting are scheduled to battle to unify the World Championship Wrestling title belts at "Clash of Champions" at 8:05 p.m. June 23 live on TBS from North Charleston (S.C.) Coliseum.

The need for two world titles no longer exists," WCW commissioner Nick Bockwinkel explained. "One world title and one champion will make WCW that much more competitive. After this great match, the fans will be the real winners!" The two-hour telecast will also feature three other world title bouts, which are revenge rematches from the recent Slam-boree pay-per-view held May 22 in Philadelphia. SOCCER SWEEP Soccer cinematogr apher Roberto Ribeiro has been chosen to shoot and direct The Winning Dream," the official feature film of World Cup USA 1994. The native Brazilian will have seven film crews under his direction in all nine U.S.

venue cities to shoot all 52 games, including the final match July 17 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, and the opening, closing, and pregame ceremonies. In addition to game footage, The Winning Dream" will also explore the feelings of players and fans and chronicle human-interest stories. A spokesman for the World Cup Organizing Committee said the 90-minute feature will be released in theaters this year before distribution to television and home video. The World Cup tournament begins June 17. All games will be telecast on ABC or ESPN.

LIFETIME SWITCH Lineup changes at cable's Lifetime, beginning this week: Reruns of Gary Cole's "Midnight Caller" will air at 7 p.m. weeknights and 10 p.m. Sundays, bumping "Lifetime Magazine," with Lisa McRee, to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. Reruns of Louise Lasser's classic "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" will run, back to back, beginning at 11 p.m.

Saturdays. STERN ON SCREEN After months of negotiations, Entertainment Television cable network has recaptured Howard Stern for a daily series. The two-year exclusive agreement plus rights to a third year of reruns calls for to broadcast a 30-minute highlight package in prime time of Stem's syndicated morning radio show. The new Stern show will begin showing this summer. SELLECK'S LATEST Tom Selleck is about to join forces with Jane Fonda on "Broken Trust," the TNT movie of which she's the executive producer and Selleck's the star.

Production starts July 11. "I'm really looking forward to it. Jane is going to be very hands-on on the project, which I like a lot," Selleck says. "I've never worked with her before, but I do know Jane a little bit, and I have enormous respect for her talent." He adds, "I wish she was acting in it as well as producing, but I don't think so." "Broken Trust" marks Selleck's first turn before the cameras since the big-screen "Mr. Baseball" two years ago.

Although he has a three-picture deal at Disney and has been pitched other projects, "I haven't liked that much stuff that's been offered to me, so I've been saying and it's been great. I've been busy with the Character Counts Coalition a bipartisan HOWARD STERN Radio highlights on advocacy group for teaching ethics to schoolchildren and watching my little girl grow up," says the father of 5-year-old Hannah Margaret Mack Selleck.
