IHA riJ BASEBALL NOTES right behind at .405. Glen Jankowskl (3-0) has been Wayne's ace. DON'T KILL THE UMPIRE Umpire Gene Sparta deserves credit for making an unpopular but proper call in Moonachie's 4-3 Metro- politan Baseball League victory over the Wayne A's Friday night. I With the A's trailing, 4-0, in the sixth inning and desperate for baserunners, third baseman Jim McKenna ever-so-subtly leaned in on a Shawn Kelly fastball and was hit hard in the arm. As McKenna, one of the Met League's all-time best players, headed toward first base, Sparta called him back.

Though umpires tend to ignore the rule that says a batter must attempt to avoid being hit, Sparta enforced it. One of the Met League's nicest people, McKen- na merits mention for his honesty. Asked about the incident, he said, "Just trying to get the team -going." BRIEFS Teaneck player-coach Leon Mat- -thews is a reporter's dream. Each week, he faxes the Stars' North Jersey Majors statistics. Mark Koenlg leads the Stars (6-2) in hitting at .471.

John Cappelmann has been sharp in his first two i outings for the Met League's Emerson-Westwood The 1992 Northern Valley at Dema- rest graduate has thrown seven scoreless innings. The Wayne Pirates have forfeited at least two Bergen Musial games for using illegal players. Ridgefleld Park has bowed out of the Valley Mack due to a lack of interest Clifton's Bob Capo, discussing the rigors of playing a 44-plus game schedule for Clifton 347 of the Passaic American Legion: "By the end of the year, I think I my parents are more tired than I am, my mother from having to wash my uniform." ALL PASSAIC SOFTBALL More than two-thirds of DeRosa's 92 pitches were strikes, with only one ball reaching the outfield. "He has a very live arm," said coach Rich Tandy. "He has a good fastball and a nice, tight deuce curve.

This is an incredible outing, but he is capable of having another performance like this." DeRosa said throwing his curveball consistently for strikes carried him to his premier outing. His curve was so good, he threw it 40 percent of the time, ending the game on a 3-2 curveball for a called third strike. Said DeRosa: "My curveball, I was throwing it for a strike. which is not unusual but usually I throw it in the dirt." EARLY BIRD GETS THE WS Coach Nell Kaufman was correct when he predicted his Wayne Dodgers would enjoy a fast start in the Bergen Stan Musial. The Dodgers won nine of their first 11 games.

Kaufman said the Dodgers, 14-14 last season, would be better because half the squad started practicing in January. "We had a lot of guys getting ready indoors, so they didn't have as many kinks," Kaufman said. "We're trying to stay one step ahead of everybody." Ex-local star says 'no thanks, Yanks' ALL-LEAGUE BASEBALL Id. I MllA 'I Jswif I SI cr UTL By Paul Dottino Correspondent Unable to envision himself as the Pride of the Yankees, former Don Bosco star Frank Laviano recently walked away from his lifelong dream of pitching for the Bronx Bombers by asking for his release. "Things were not moving the way that I thought that they would. I was pitching every seven to eight days and it was hard for me to keep in pitching form," said Laviano, who was with Class A Greensboro this season.

"Maybe they thought that I was just happy to be in uniform and playing for the Yankees, but it got to the point that I was so negative about it that I would go to the bullpen with turf shoes on instead of spikes." Laviano, 22, was 0-0 with an 8.31 earned run average in four appearances. He struck out seven, walked six, and allowed eight hits in nine innings. The right-hander was granted his release May 15, and last week agreed to participate in a five-week instructional league in September for the St. Louis Cardinals FRANK LAVIANO Not enough work Laviano said he was told by director of minor league operations Mitch Lukevics that his velocity had dropped from the low 90s to the mid 80s this season, and that the Yankees wanted to give their other prospects more opportunities. "I told them that I have too much pride to go through this," Laviano said.

"It's a good organization and I still think very highly of them. But it didn't work out. I wasn't going to be a career minor-leaguer with the Yankees. "I still feel that I have the potential. He will keep in shape by pitching for Waldwick in the Metropolitan League, where he made his debut Tuesday. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from Spring Valley, N.Y., originally signed with the Yankees in 1990 as a free agent out of George Mason University.

He was 0-3 with a 4.61 ERA as a reliever for Tampa of the Rookie Gulf Coast League. Last year, he advanced to Class A Oneonta (5-3, 4.65) and came out of the bullpen to throw two complete games, including a three-hit shutout, in the final month of the season. He thought he had earned a role at Greensboro this year, but was relegated to spot duty. "I'm sure it's frustrating," said Hoyt Wilhelm, who was one of La-viano's minor league pitching instructors. "Sometimes there is nothing a player can do about it.

I understand because I've been down that road a lot. But I tell the players that just because one guy thinks you can't do it, that it doesn't mean somebody else does too." Musial. Sparked by run-scoring doubles by Peter Spear and Mike Oakes, Ramsey took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Connie Mack Jason Fitzgerald tossed a four-hitter and Ryan Urtheil had two RBI to lead Teaneck past Tenafly, 7-5, in a Valley Mack game. Fitzgerald struck out seven and walked three.
