EMO THE RECORD TUESDAY, JULY 23. 1991 NBC News adding women's show For Lifetime channel, a night to remember Arguing for and against are Harvard University law professor Alan Dershowltz and USC law professor Susan Estrlch, herself a rape victim and Dershowitz's former student header on Friday night At 8 p.m. on "Verdict," correspondent Harold Dow covers the Miami trial of a suspected drug dealer accused of ordering the murder-for-hire of a community anti-drug crusader. If convicted, he faces the death penalty. At 8:30, "Whose Side Are You On?" takes on the issue of the disclosure of rape victims' names in the press.

Charles Kuralt anchors. 2 weapon, a bloody knife. This segment feels exploitative, and one wonders if a more definitive criminal shouldn't have been the subject. At the Television Critics Association convention in Los Angeles last week, Saldana noted that "Confessions" aims not only to show what happened, but also to figure out "why it happened and what some of the factors were in terms of circumstances and behavior in the home, at the work place, and things like that" Saldana, who founded the nonprofit Victims for Victims after she was brutally stabbed by an obsessive fan, noted that in retrospect, "a friend or a family member or a co-worker or boss will say that there were marked changes in the behavior of the individual" "I honestly feel, after seeing the edited finished version, that this particular piece could offer help to a woman in a similar situation." In a much lighter vein, Lifetime's "Veronica Clare" is a detective series starring Canadian actress Laura Robinson, who was selected from some 500 hopefuls. Robinson, who was also on hand the critics convention, eloquently described the series' appeal.

"It's an interesting show in that it's not very violent, which is something that attracted me. It's a more cerebral cat-and-mouse that THERESA SALDANA Host for "Confessions of Crime" goes on between people, and it's definitely a mystery. You get into the thoughts of various characters and what's going on with them." Lifetime has indeed come far since its birth in 1984, when two ailing networks Cable Health Network and Daytime, a diet and talk-oriented cable channel merged. Today, the network is available to more than 5,400 cable systems serving over 53 million households in this country. And Fili foresees no sign of slowing down.

In fact, she considers this era to be a very exciting time, when all kinds of unorthodox deals are being struck. "You'd be amazed at the conversations that now take place between the networks and cable. People who would never have thought of working in cable, they are now banging down the door," says Fili. "There are no rules, and there are no longer enemies." "Cover to Cover," hosted by Gayle King and Robin Wagner, is billed as an "information program on women's lifestyles and interests." The first daytime show created by the news division was "A Closer Look" with Faith Daniels. It began earlier this year. A third daytime effort, "One on One," an interview series, is currently under development. After a respectable two-hour start last Tuesday night (a 12.2 national rating and a 22 percent audience share), "Stephen King's Golden Years" went down the tubes Thursday when it debuted in its regular 10 p.m. time slot It finished behind "PrimeTime Live" and a rerun of "L.A.

Law." Julie Moran, the former co-host of the National Basketball Association's "Inside Stuff" for NBA Entertainment, has joined ABC Sports as a commentator. Her immediate assignments include the 1991 Pan American Games from Havana, Cuba; "ABC's Wide World of Sports" coverage of the Little League World Series; and college football. CBS is offering a topical double- physician by Medicare pi Question: Cardiofitness after Heart Attack? Answer: Cardiac Rehabilitation Institute of Bergen County By Virginia Mann Record Television Critic In its seven-year history, lifetime Television, the so-called contemporary women's cable network, has passed some notable milestones. One was its ballyhooed strategy of picking up reruns of NBC's "The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd" and then perpetuating the series by producing 39 more episodes. The latter was an unprecedented move for cable.

Also making the list of highlights would be Lifetime's acquisition of the exclusive rights to reruns for "Moonlighting," "L.A. Law," and "The Tracey Ullman Show," as well as its commitment to produce at least 15 original movies, six of which have aired since last July. And tonight, Lifetime celebrates the mother of all milestones its (and cable TVs) first night of totally original programming. The two-hour block, which will be repeated on Saturdays from 10 p.m. to midnight, kicks off at 9 with "Confessions of Crime," a half-hour reality series in which the host, actress and crime victim Theresa Saldana, "takes viewers on a unique journey into the causes and motivations of violent crime." At 9:30 is "The Hidden Room," a half-hour anthology of mysterious stories, with host Mimi Ku-zyk.

It's followed by "Veronica Clare," an hour-long film noirish drama whose title character is both a private detective and co-owner of a jazz club. It's a curiously eclectic mix. "We took the three strongest projects that we had in development," explains Pat Fili, Lifetime's dynamic senior vice president of programming and production since 1988. "We're selling it as 'mystery loves Mystery is an area that women are very interested in, and we think the three of them work very well together." The most intriguing of the trio is "The Hidden Room," which Fili says examines certain aspects of women's lives, "primarily their innermost fears, secrets, desires, and conflicts." In tonight's touching episode, "Dream Child," Alice Krige of plays a woman who has not come to grips with the stillbirth of her only child. By using astral projection, she has nightly visits with a mysterious toddler who's about the age her own child would be.

These playful encounters help her to heal. Future installments, boasting an impressive list of guest stars including Marg Helgenberger, Melissa Gilbert, Helen Slater, and Amanda Plummer bit upon a variety of topics. In next week's episode, "Splinters of Privacy," Lara Flynn Boyle (Donna on 'Twin plays a college student who finally faces up to her father's continuing sexual abuse. Shot in Toronto, "The Hidden Room" is an international co-production, spearheaded by Chesler-Perlmutter Productions. Executive producer Lewis Chester, who also produces the CBS late-night series "The Exile works with partners in Canada and Eu- -rope.

He believes this kind of arrangement has many benefits. "I like to believe that the opportunities are not just financial, but they're creative as well," says Chester, who first explored this kind of international arrangement when he began producing HBO's highly acclaimed series "The Hitchhiker" in 1981. "One of the reasons that 'Hitchhiker was so successful was that it took on some values of European filmmaking. A darker story line, more psychological density, a greater intensity, and more emphasis on character. That worked, and the audience responded." If "Hidden Room" is the most unusual show in the Lifetime lineup, "Confessions of Crime" is likely to be its most controversial one and not only because of its heavy reliance on re-creations as brief connective passages.

The opening episode centers on a battered woman, Edith Mendez, who stabbed her abusive husband to death. We see chunks of video from her interrogation, as well as prison interviews with Mendez. Throughout both, she is crying. And she positively wails when police make her look at the murder Small items If you have odds and ends, into a box labeled "Any Item, The only facility in Bergen County to be directed by a board-certified cardiac surgeon.
