A 8 The Leader-Post Regina June 25, 1993 Hot-line callers, editorials slam $6,000 expense decision By ANDREW FLYNN The Canadian Press Public reaction to this weeks Senate expense increase came in a swift and vitriolic torrent Thursday. Senators voted themselves another $6,000 in yearly expenses Wednesday to bring potential income and perks for some up to $80,800. Only 58 out of 104 senators were in attendance for the vote. Im absolutely livid, absolutely my bloods boiling on this issue when I heard this, said a caller to a radio phone-in show on Torontos CFRB. "This had better be an issue in the next election because we must abolish the Senate as soon as possi ble.

Rick Mapp, an unemployed Halifax sheet-metal worker, echoed that rage. "If I can live on $540 a month on welfare, they can live on a hell of a lot less than they do, Mapp said. They dont need that raise. Theyre getting their money for nothing and half of them are travelling all over the country at my expense. I was working, now here I am fighting to get a welfare cheque.

Im living like a goddamned dog $180 a month to feed myself and clothe myself. tions for people to sign. Host Terry Moore said the Senate obviously wasnt in tune with the mood of the nation and its the principle of the expense increase that angers people. Callers were demanding everything from abolishing the Senate to asking Prime Minister-designate Kim Campbell to overturn the decision and urging voters to vote Reform. Canadas newspapers also took part in the day's flood of anti-Senate sentiment.

The Edmonton Sun called the Peter Warren, host of Winnipegs CJOB radio open-line show, linked his show with similar programs in Calgary, Vancouver and Hamilton to organize a petition of public support against the increases. "We can stop the pig trough, said Warren. Lines were sizzling at radio stations across Canada as callers entered the Senate-bashing forum. I never heard of anything so underhanded and self-centered as what these senators have just pulled off, said one caller on Calgarys CHQR. The radio station is faxing its peti senators a useless, archaic, redundant and expensive encrustation on the ship of state.

Like barnacles, these senators should be scraped off and a new vastly improved Triple-E Senate put in instead," the newspaper said. The Vancouver Province called the Senate a travelling pork show. Artifacts like (Liberal Senator) Len Marchand say theyre sick of being kicked around by the public, the newspaper said. Majbe if theyd stop gorging themselves the kicking would stop. YOU KNOW THE NAME.

Brenda Ann Morrison appeared in provincial court Thursday and chose to be tried by a Court of Queens Bench judge sitting without a jury. Morrison was remanded in custody until her preliminary hearing. The attack, kidnapping and unlawful confinement are alleged to have taken place June 19 in Regina.

Guilty plea A Regina woman responsible for an accident on the Trans-Canada Highway in April that injured two other people and tied up traffic for nearly three hours pleaded guilty Thursday to impaired driving causing bodily harm. Marcella Ann Manitopyes, 38, entered her plea in provincial court Thursday and Judge Bruce Henning adjourned sentencing until Sept. 9. Manitopyes was charged after an accident two kilometres east of the city near the CKCK Television station. RCMP said a car that was driving west down the east-bound lane struck another vehicle head-on.

The accident backed up more than 100 vehicles on the highway. Remanded A 19-year-old man accused of escaping from the Regina Correctional Centre a week ago appeared in provincial court Thursday and was remanded in custody until June 30. Kevin William Woolsey is charged in connection with an incident June 18 in which four inmates escaped from the correctional centre. Errol Vance Redwood, 32, was arrested at the Sakimay Reserve north of Grenfell Wednesday afternoon in connection with the escape, Two others, Lawrence Pelletier and Sammy John John were still at large Thursday and considered to be dangerous. Youth flees ESTEVAN (Special) A youth convicted of breaking and entering the Estevan Junior High School was sentenced to 12 months of secure custody.

Upon receiving the sentence, the 17-year-old bolted from the court room. RCMP and Estevan city police are still searching for the youth. Cuts to bus lines planned WEYBURN (CP) Residents of several southeastern Saskatchewan communities could find themselves without passenger bus service. Greyhound Bus Lines has applied to the provincial Highway Traffic Board to drop its run from Regina to Reston, The move would affect several communities, including the town of Carlyle. Carlyle Mayor Audrey Young said discontinuing service would have a harsh effect on seniors in the area who rely on the bus to get them to Regina for medical treatment.

But Young admitted low usage of the line has led to Greyhound's application. Public hearings will be held next month on the proposal.
