TJie Leader-Post Regina July 25, 1989 D2 Sport Around theCFL with Darrell Davis NIBRIE Oilers said Monday they have signed goaltender Bill Ranford to a three-year contract. The 22-year-old goalie joined the Oilers from the Boston Bruins in a trade in March 1988. In 35 games with Edmonton, Ranford has 18 wins, eight losses and five ties and a goals-against-average of 3.40. Ranford has been the Oilers backup net-minder behind star Grant Fuhr, but his status could change as Fuhr has said he plans to retire because of unspecified problems with Oiler management Negotiations to sign Dan Maloney as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs have broken off, the two sides said Monday. They were hiring an assistant who really will be the head coach, said Maloney, the Leafs head coach from 1984-86.

Head coach George Armstrong has indicated that he is a reluctant coach. who is on Calgarys practice roster, must pay the fine if he is activated. March is expected to play for the Stampeders on Wednesday Stampeders head coach Lary Kuharich didnt agree with the discipline. Heres a guy (Braswell) who gets into it in almost every game, said Kuharich. This is the third instance where he's done that.

Yet he gets fined less than March. Calgary was indeed contacted by the injury-plagued Roughriders, who were interested in acquiring non-import linebackers Matt Finlay or Frank Balkovec. Neither have been given starting roles despite injuries to starters Ken Ford and Lemont Jeffers. From L-P Wire Services A third Tight between Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard, who last met nine years ago, will be announced formally at a news conference Wednesday. The date and site were not known but the match could be Nov.

2 in Las Vegas or Nov. 30 in Atlantic City, the Associated Press said. Speculation was that Leonards next fight would be against Thomas Hearns, who fought a 12-round draw with Leonard in their long-awaited rematch June 12 at Las Vegas. In their first fight, Leonard stopped Hearns in the 14th round for the undisputed welterweight title Sept. 16, 1981, at Las Vegas.

Duran, 38, and Leonard, 33, twice met for the World Boxing Council welterweight title in 1980. Duran won the title from Leonard on a 15-round unanimous decision June 20 at Montreal. Then Leonard regained the title Nov. 25 when Duran quit in the eighth round at New Orleans. Leonard will go into the third fight as the WBC super middleweight champion, the fifth title he has held.

Duran became a four-time champion when he won the WBC middleweight title on a 12-round split decision over Iran Barkley on Feb. 24 at Atlantic City. Dont call them Argonauts. Theyre officially the Toronto Argos. When Harry Ornest bought the club from Carling, he changed its corporate name to Toronto Argos Football Club, he changed the teams logo and the teams helmets to read Argos.

According to the CFL Facts, Figures and Records book, their nickname is Argos. Whats an Argo? This is great for saving space Ornest in newspaper columns and for saving time on sportscasts: Esks beat Argos; Leos beat Argos, Roughies beat Argos; Blues beat Argos; Tikes beat Argos; Riders beat Argos; Stamps beat Argos U.S. federal investigators on Monday were trying to determine how a deadly medication was added to feed that is linked to the deaths of up to 12 New Jersey horses, including one of Americas top two-year-old pacers. Officials at Inter-County Feeds in Woodridge, N.Y., issued an alert late Thursday night after employees accidentally added monensin to horse feed. Monensin is used in poultry and cattle feeds as a dietary supplement but the medication is lethal to horses because it weakens the heart muscle and causes cardiac arrest.

Talon Almahurst, who went off Friday night as the 1-10 favorite and placed second in a $50,000 US qualification race for the $907,000 Woodrow Wilson Pace at the Meadowlands, died at the track Saturday morning Dick Jennings of Chicago guided Pied Piper into port at Mackinac Island, as the sun set Monday to finish first in a marathon version of the Port Huron-to-Macki-nac yacht race. The 20-metre ultra-light sailboat, which also finished first in last weeks Chi-cago-to-Mackinac race, completed the 480-kilometre run up the length of Lake Huron in 54 hours eight minutes 32 seconds Canada recorded its first victory, 2-1 over New Zealand, in four games at the junior womens world field hockey championship Monday in Ottawa. Compiled by John Chaput Joe Carter of the Cleveland Indians hit five home runs in two consecutive games the fifth player in American League baseball history to do so and was named the AL player-of-the-week on Monday. Carter hit .333 during the week of July 17-23 and drove in nine runs Mark Grace of the Chicago Cubs, who hit .379 with six runs and 10 RBI in seven games, was named the National League player-of-the-week. on Tuesday marked the first time the Lions lost a home opener since July 22, 1976, when Saskatchewan beat them 35-8 The Blue Bombers are on their annual week-long road trip. Last season they didnt return to Winnipeg for a five-day span between games in Edmonton and Calgary. This year the Blue Bombers took a train from Hamilton, where they played on Thursday, to Ottawa. The Rough Riders took a $20,000 bath courtesy of Ticket Master, the company which failed to print enough tickets for Ottawas home opener on Wednesday. Approximately 1,500 fans (average $16.50 per ticket) were let into Lansdowne Park for free because they couldnt buy tickets.

Rough Riders general manager Jo-Anne Polak made a wise p.r. decision to let in the fans. Before last seasons home opener there werent enough ticket booths open to service the unexpected onslaught of game-day patrons; hundreds of fans refused to stand in line and instead left the ballpark Rough Riders fans were asked to take umbrellas to the teams game against the Argos. Polak made the request to show up Ornest, who wants all CFL teams to play in domed stadiums. As an opening salvo, Polak sent Ornest a public letter listing the reasons why Ottawa doesnt need a retractable domed stadium like Torontos SkyDome.

Among her reasons: Parliament Hill keeps the air hot year-round; in Ottawa they dont retract anything; real football fans dont mind getting wet and the wind from Hamilton doesnt reach Ottawa. Calgarys players and budget are taking beatings. The Stampeders set aside $200,000 to pay injured players this season. Their first two injuries were to quarterbacks Erik Kramer and Terrence Jones. The average salary for quarterbacks in 1988 was $85,778, approximately $31,000 higher than the CFLs average salary Jones wont be able to return from a groin injury in time for Wednesdays game in B.C.

but he may be ready for an Aug. 1 game in Calgary against Ottawa. If nothing else, his return should help ticket sales at McMahon Stadium, which would otherwise be a desolate place after Edmontons 54-4 drubbing of the Stampeders Donna Smellie, winner of the heptathlon at the Francophone Games in Casablanca, is a sister of Kevin Smellie, Saskatchewans unsigned draft pick from the University of Massachusetts Tiger-Cats rookie running back Derrick McAdoo is a cousin of former NBA star Bob McAdoo Stampeders slotback Billy Bob Heberts brother is New Orleans Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert. In case anyone missed this, and nearly everyone did, punishments were handed down by the CFL in a preseason brawl involving Eskimos linebacker Jeff Braswell and Stampeders lineman Joe March. Braswell was fined $500 for kicking Stampeders running back Andy McVey.

March was fined $1,000 for a helmet-swinging incident. March, Yee tops Chinese junior field Reginas Glen Yee fired a 92 to win the junior (16-and-under) event during the 18th annual Chinese Open golf tournament Monday at the Murray Golf Course. Dale Toye of Wadena finished six strokes back, followed by Reginas Ben Tingley at 101. Wakaws Terri Mah won the championship flight with an 83, five shots better than Yorktons Brian Mark. Other event winners were Ming Wong of Bredenbury at 92 (first flight), John Marks of Winnipeg at 94 (second flight), Felix Mui of Saskatoon at 101 (third flight) and Angie Mark of Yorkton at 103 (womens division).

Jackson, competing in the boys under-18 division, defeated Bruce Margetts of Vancouver 6-1, 6-3. The four Saskatchewan players are members of the provinces team which will compete in August at the Canada Summer Games.

Herb Pinder and Ron Whiteside shot 2-over-par 74s Monday at the Melfort Golf and Country Club. George Holizki of the Regina Murray is in third place with a 76. Ben Reid of the Regina Wascana and George Bradshaw of the Regina club are tied for ninth with Saskatoons Harold Dunlop at 79.

Tulloch leads Jets to victory Neil Tulloch hit two singles and drove in a run to lead the visiting Regina Jets to a 3-2 victory over the Lumsden Cubs in a South Saskatchewan Senior Baseball League game Monday. Winning pitcher Darrell Keller had six strikeouts. Shane Simpson got the last out for the save. Brad Gyug struck out seven for the Cubs.

Dale Mackenzie, Jeff Lawson and Doug Crofts each had two singles for Lumsden. By The Associated Press Although Heisman trophy winner Barry Sanders is still unsigned, he is still on the mind of Detroit Lions coach Wayne Fontes. Fontes is keeping in touch with the record-setting running back from Oklahoma State. I told him to keep himself in shape, dont stop working out and dont get down in the dumps, Fontes said of a phone conversation he had with Sanders, the No. 2 overall pick in the National Football League draft on April 24.

I told him to call me once in awhile and Ill keep him up on whats going on. He wants to be here and Im sure well have him here eventually. Right now, Sanders isnt even close to signing a contract with the Lions. The Lions have also had problems trying to deal disgruntled linebacker Jimmy Williams to Indianapolis. Williams, a seven-year veteran who was the Lions most valuable player in 1987 and their defensive captain last year, has worked out with the Colts and passed a physical.

He injured his left knee last season, missing the final 11 games before having off-season surgery. He has publicly blasted the Lions, one reason why the team is trying to accommodate his trade request. GREEN BAY PACKERS Tony Mandarichs agent says he knows nothing about trade talk that has his client, the No. 1 overall pick of the Green Bay Packers, going to the Buffalo Bills. Vern Sharbaugh, Mandarichs agent, discounted a weekend television report out of Buffalo concerning a possible trade.

No one has ever contacted me, Sharbaugh said. And I would think that before any trade is made, the. team would want to know what kind of money it will take to get Tony signed. At this point, there has been no movement. Trade talk concerning Mandarich, of Oakville, swirled as players reported Sunday for the opening of the Packers training camp.

Mandarich has not agreed to contract terms and did not report to camp. Green Bay has come to terms with quarterback Anthony Dilweg from Duke, and defensive end Matt Brock from Oregon, both third-round draft choices. The Packers held their first workout Monday. PHOENIX CARDINALS Veteran wide receiver Roy Green, who threatened to be a training camp holdout, changed his mind and reported. Green, closing in on the all-time club records for touchdowns, receptions and yardage, is in the final year of a five-year contract worth $715,000 US this season, plus a $25,000 reporting bonus.

Its time to swallow a little bit of pride, Green said. The bottom line is I have a decent contract. But because of some situations (Plan Barry Sanders free agency) in the off-season, I felt justifiable in trying to get my contract restructured. Im not satisfied with my contract, but I can live with it. ATLANTA FALCONS Two of Atlantas top draft picks had their first practice sessions Monday after signing contracts: first-round pick Shawn Collins, a wide receiver from Northern Arizona, and third-round pick Keith Jones, a running back from Illinois.

The Falcons still have two unsigned draft choices: first-round pick Deion Sanders, a cornerback from Florida State who is playing baseball in the New York Yankees minor-league system, and second-round pick Ralph Norwood, an offensive tackle from LSU. HOUSTON OILERS Houston Oilers owner Bud Adams said Monday the team will retract its offer to holdout Mike Rozier if the teams top running back does not accept the deal and report to training camp Friday. Im fully aware of how the negotiations with Mike Rozier have been progressing, Adams said. We have a very good offer on the table to Mike. If he hasnt accepted our current contract offer and reported to training camp with the rest of the veterans on Friday, then we are pulling that offer off the table.

Rozier, a two-time Pro Bowler, reportedly has been offered a US deal that would make him one of the six highest-paid running backs in the NFL with an $850,000 salary for the 1989 season. None of the contract is said to be guaranteed. NEW YORK GIANTS All-Pro linebacker Lawrence Taylor has decided to end his holdout and will report to training camp today. Taylor and quarterback Phil Simms were missing, despite being under contract, when camp opened Monday. Robinson with McNall in L.A.

Tonight's Game Winnipeg at Ottawa (1-1) (0-2) STV 5:30 p.m. WINNIPEG: Winnipeg starts the same lineup for the second week in a row, which may or may not be good news for Blue Bombers fans. Last week they were outgained 363-229 in net offensive yards in a 28-22 loss to Hamilton Principal among the Bombers areas of concern is an offensive line which awaits the return of all-pro tackle Chris Walby. To compensate for the missing Walby, whos close to recovering from an injured knee, backup Scott Red! was moved to guard and guard David Black was moved to Walbys tackle spot. Last week, the group had fits with Grover Covington, Mike Walker et al.

Theyll have an easier time this week against a young Ottawa front seven Heading into this season, the Bombers offence was supposed to be solid and their defence was thought to be suspect. After two games, however, quarterback Sean Salisbury has directed a spotty attack (under 50 per cent in completions) and the defence has shown signs of competence. Quency Williams, acquired from the Calgary Stampeders in the offseason, has stepped into Tyrone Joness old blitzing linebacker spot and generated pressure from the outside. Linebacker Greg Battle (charley horse) and safety Moustafa Ali (broken finger) are nicked but will play. OTTAWA: The Rough Riders have shown significant improvement under new head coach Steve Goldman but it remains to be seen if two close losses torpedo their season Goldman is still trying to construct a defence.

This week, Darrell Booker steps in for Ken Braden as the starting middle linebacker. Gary Palumbis also steps back into his starting tackle position after missing last weeks game. Rookie Arnold Campbell, who played tackle last week, moves outside into Lloyd Mumphreys position. Mumphrey is out with a hamstring injury It appears Goldman has uncovered some talent in linebacker Terry Jones and cornerbacks Tony Williams and Derrick White. Last week, the group contained Toronto's four import receivers in1 the Riders last-minute 21-17 loss.

This week, they face another test in James Murphy, Buster Rhymes et al Ottawa racked up 413 yards in total offence against Torontos vaunted defence last week. The problem was they turned the ball over seven times. This week, Reggie Ward starts at wideout for Eugene Goodlow, whos out three to four weeks with a knee injury. Gerald Wilcox, the first pick in the 1989 CFL draft, also plays his first league game. Wilcox backs up Ken Evraire at slotback.

$430,000. That doesnt include deferred payments of perhaps $150,000, which the Canadiens contend comes under a separate corporate contract with a brewery company. Savard said the team is in fact offering Robinson two years salary for one years play. Thats because the Canadiens have a policy of pay-, ing a full years salary to 10-year veterans of the team who retire. Savard has made it clear to Robinson, who has been with the Canadiens since the 1972-73 season, and Cape that Montreal will not pay a separation bonus to a player whos going to another team.

Cape said he and Robinson asked Savard again on Friday to have the 15-per-cent increase based on total salary, and to have Robinson's jersey number retired when he leaves, but Savard turned them down. MONTREAL (CP) Veteran Montreal defenceman Larry Robinson and his agent, Donny Cape, are spending the week in California as guests of Bruce McNall, owner of the Los Angeles Kings, to talk about the future. Robinson and Cape almost didnt go. McNall invited them to Los Angeles weeks ago to discuss a possible move there. Then last Friday, with contract complications in Montreal, they phoned McNall and tried to cancel the trip.

We told him we didnt think it was right to accept his hospitality when in fact we know we have to sign with the Canadiens or lose the one-year separation arrangement," Cape said. McNall thanked us for being up front but said to come c. it anyway. He said perhaps something can be worked out. Robinson, a free agent, and Cape have been unable to reach satisfactory terms with Montreal general manager Serge Savard, who has offered a one-year contract with a 15-per-cent pay increase.

But the increase would be on the percentage of salary actually paid by the Canadiens, estimated at Sponsor: ScJScTg SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS VS FRIDAY JULY 28th 7:30 HAMILTON TI-CATS ramniEia RAH.E.1T on tha practice field KIDS Bt iu ai 10 ta wia a Milaaa Janes ar Tim McCray Jaraay FarsaaaUy presented fallawiaf tha pama.
