From THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The Washington Redskins may be the Super Bowl champions in 49 states. But not in Texas, where Dallas fans dream once again of the Cowboys becoming Americas Team. With Emmitt Smith rushing for 139 yards on 26 carries, Kelvin Martin returning a punt 79 yards for a touchdown and Troy Aikman throwing for 216 yards and a TD, the Cowboys established themselves as Super Bowl contenders in their own right They opened the NFL season with a 23-10 win over the Redskins on Monday.

Its certainly a confidence boost to beat a team like that, said Martin. Especially for a young team like ours. So confident are the Cowboys that head coach Jimmy Johnson even looked ahead before the finish to next weeks game against the New York Giants in the Meadowlands. I told a couple of our coaches and a couple of our players: Well win this ball game, Johnson said. The game thats gonna concern us will be the Giants.

Compiled by kob Vanstont Mail to: Grey Cup Tickets Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Cub Box 1277 Taylor Field Regina, Sask After setting a world record in the decathlon, Dan O'Brien has his sights set on breaking the barrier and winning an Olympic gold medal. Nine thousand points is definitely in my future, said OBrien, who broke the mark set at the '84 Olympics by Britain's Daley Thompson with a 8391-point effort at an international track meet that ended Saturday in Talence, France.

I hope that an Olympic gold medal will come. The key to scoring 9,000 points is speed and that comes in the 100 metres and 400 metres. You need somebody with speed in those events. Thompsons record was 8,847 points. Before I used to say the world's greatest athlete was Daley Thompson, said OBrien, the '91 world champ.

Now I have to say myself at this point, finally. If youre asking whos the world's greatest athlete, you're looking at the worlds greatest decathlete. Thats what I wanted to prove at this meet" Favored for this year's Olympic gold medal, OBrien failed to make the U.S. team after no-heighting in the pole vault at the trials in New Orleans in June. I would much rather have been in Barcelona competing for the gold medal, OBrien said.
