The Leader-Post Regina, Saskatchewan Monday, November 8, 1982 Film festival A 5 Film on womens prison wins top honors at Yorkton festival lations and were a maximum of 60 minutes long. Founded more than 30 years ago, the week-long festival has become an annual event and has brought national and international fame to Yorkton. The Academy Awards-style Golden Sheaf presentations were carried live on local cable television for the first time this year. Among the celebrity guests in attendance were Premier Grant Devine and Sandie Rinaldo, co-host of CTVs Canada AM program: It was an exciting evening for Janis Cole and Holly Dale, the co-producers and directors of the winning P4W Prison for Women film. The 58-minute P4W is described as a shattering look at love and loneliness in the most desperate of places." There is virtually no narration and, according to Dale, it is up to the audience to decide what to think of the material presented.

The interviews with women serving life sentences for murder are especially shattering. Many of those who watch the film might well question the humanity of laws that make it virtually impossible for persons convicted of first-degree murder to receive parole until they have served a minimum of 25 years. In addition to the award for best film, P4W won the film, the cinematography and the human condition competitions. Breaking Through The Story ol By Ndil Scott of The Leader-Post YORKTON A documentary film about the federal prison for women in Kingston, and a video production by a Winnipeg television station won top honors at the 1982 Yorkton International Short Film and Video Festival. Produced and directed by two young Toronto film-makers.

P4W: Prison for Women was awarded the 1982 Golden Sheaf Award for film at an awards banquet Saturday night at the Parkland Agriplex. The Catch, a 25-minute video drama produced by CKND-TV in Winnipeg, won the Golden Award for being best entry in the video category. Described as an experimental production," The Catch was shot on location at a fishing campsite on the shore of Lake Winnipeg. Allan Kroeker. its director, won a craft award for best video direction.

CBC Television in Saskatoon won two awards for its production of Colony Trek: A Trip Through the Past. The 26-minute drama-documentary won a Golden Sheaf award in the "human dynamic category and also won The Saskatchewan Cable Television Association Award for the best video production made in Saskatchewan. Colony Trek tells about the re-enact-merit of the trip made by file temperance colonists who founded Saskatoon. A total of nearly 200 film and video productions were entered in this year's festival. All met Canadian content regu Norman and Tom won the "human dynamic" film competition.

Entered by the National Institute on Mental Retardation, the 58-minute film tells the story of two severely handicapped young men who have spent most of their lives in an institution. Now, they are living in their own home. Steady As She Goes, a 26-minute film produced by the National Film Board, won the competition in the spontaneous human film category. For the first time this year, video entries were shown on the local cable television station. Cable subscribers voted for their favorites and a new peoples choice award was created.

It was won by The Accident, a documentary produced by students at the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto. The 48-minute production probed the physical and mental pain suffered by victims of automobile accidents. We Wont Let Him die, a 49-minute production entered by CFAC Lethbridge Television, won the "hurqpn condition video category. The award in the spontaneous human category was won by B.C. A Special Christmas.

The 25-minute production about the commercialization ol Christmas was entered by Cinera Productions Ltd. of Toronto. A one-minute production called A Meewasin Moment: I Remember Saskatoon, was judged the best in the commercial-promotional-vignette category. A total of 33 awards and certificates of merit were awarded. The National Film Board won seven and the CBC won six awards.
