Olive Scott was interested in community affairs, especially the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary She was proud of her independence and to be able to live in her own home Predeceased by her parents; her husband, one son Donald, killed in France in World War II, and two brothers She is survived by a son Leonard (Jackie) of Cupar; a daughter Elsie (Dan) George of Regina, five grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren, sister Lucy Larimore of Tacoma, Washington, several nieces and nephews. Memorial donations to Sask Heart Fund in lieu of flowers Oliver Symes was born in Dilke, Sask 20th of August, 1913 He attended public and high school at Pense and Teachers' College, Regina in 1931-32. He taught in several schools in Sask until his enlistment in the RCAF in 1941 During the war, Oliver served as a Flight Sergeant Instrument Mechanic in a variety of postings until his discharge in 1945 Enrolling in the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, in 1945, Oliver Symes earned his A in 1948 and his (Agricultural Engineering) in 1949 On graduation, he was employed by Ford Motor Company, Regina, as tractor and implement sales representative for Saskatchewan Returning to the University of Saskatoon in July, 1950, Professor Oliver Symes was appointed Acting Head, Department of Agricultural Engineering He was made Head of the Department in 1953 and served in that capacity until 1955 when he accepted a position with the International Division of the Ford Motor Company with world-wide responsibility for tractors and implements Professor Symes returned to the University of Saskatchewan in 1957 and was re-appointed head of Agricultural Engineering in 1961, a position which he held until 1978 He retired from the University of Saskatchewan in 1979 Professor Symes is survived by his wife, Maybelle (Gillard); his son, Dean (Larry) Symes and his wife, Evelyn of Regina and their children Calvin, Michelle and Erin, his daughter, Mrs Marion Foster and her husband, Patrick of Toronto and their children Myles and Daygen Oliver Symes had a wide range of professional and community interests which included the Canadian Society of Agricultural Engineering, the Saskatchewan Farm Safety Council, the Agricultural Machinery Administration, Saskatoon Rotary Club, Saskatoon Board of Trade, the Canadian Paraplegic Association and a host of other organizations He was particularly interested in the work of the Western Development Museum and the Threshermen's Club and was recognized as an authority on the development of Canadian farm machinery A dedicated teacher of his students of Engineering, Oliver Symes also served as a teacher to the farming community of Saskatche wan at field days and conferences on farm safety and the mechanization of farm procedures He was recognized international ly for his work on tractors and tillage implements and his service was sought by industry and governments in North Ameri can, Europe, Australia and Hawaii An avid sportsman, Oliver Symes also was a dedicated conservationist with a wide range of outdoor interests His collection
