"Our experience shows there are some major health and safety problems in Saskatchewan workplaces," said Harminder Magnon, chairman of the CUPE task force. "While co-operation is required among all three parties the government, employers and workers the major responsibility for assuring safety in the workplace rests with the government," he said.

"Many of our members complain that health and safety requirements are being ignored by employers, and government enforcement has declined due to cutbacks." The current campaign is an attempt to find out more clearly the kinds of problems that exist across the province. Questionnaires and information on current provincial legislation have been sent to CUPE's 250 Saskatchewan locals. The task force will hold hearings in six communities where union members are being invited to make either oral or written presentations. The hearings take place in Yorkton on Feb.
