BIO THE VANCOUVER SUN, MONDAY, JULY 9, 2001 ENTERTAINMENT Star system questioned by TV network owners I I The stations urban Vancouver and victoria viewers 18 years and older are watching: VTV News at 6: 14,000 News Hour BCTV: 255,000 News Hour CHEK: 59,000 Canada Now CBCJ: 50,000 Global News CKVU: 67,000 Designated market area (urban Vancouver Victoria: 2,396,000 Information provided by Neilsen today go deeper than which hairdo can read the teleprompter the best, Stanger said. "There's only so much audience available for news at six o'clock." The trend isn't limited to broadcast journalism. Stanger, who also teaches a class in media and marketing at BCIT every semester, said he recentiy asked his class, with the exception of male students who follow sports, to name four or five reporters or columnists for either the Province or Vancouver Sun. They could name only one (Sun editorial pages columnist Vaughn Palmer). When Stanger mentioned four or five writers by name in front of his class, most students recognized them, but Stanger said it was instructive to him that they could not come up with those names without prompting.

"I think that, consciously, media owners the people who actually own newspapers and radio and TV stations have, over a period of time, taken a look at the star system and asked themselves if they really need the stars to maintain their ratings or market share. And their answer, in most cases, has been no. "Do I think it was a smart move to hire Pamela Martin? Yes, absolutely. Will it help them? Yes, absolutely. I would not be at all surprised to see the media numbers come out in the fall and see CTVs local news, anchored by Pamela Martin and Bill Good, more than double its share of the news market.

Do I think we sometimes attach too much importance in our business to who the anchor is? Yes, I do. This move was always going to be more about VTV and CTV than it was BCTV and Global" Stanger predicted that some BCTV viewers will follow Martin to VTV, but that most will remain where they are. "I believe that, between September and December, you're going to see an incredible amount of money spent on promoting local news," Stanger said. "When the stations sit back and take a look at their marketing budgets this fall and ask themselves, 'Do we really need to promote the fact that BCTV has become Global and there's a new CHUM station? they're going to say no. The stations don't need to promote their programs.

They don't really need to promote their big hits, because people will find them. The battleground for advertising revenue, and the difference between make-it and break-it, will be the ratings that local news can generate. The real battleground is going to be news. Just you watch." Sun Television Critic astrachanpacpresssouthanica From B8 attention," Kelman said. When BCTV purged many of its older newscasters several years ago, the most vocal complaints came from older viewers.

"Older people maintain a ritual," Kelman said. "They don't adapt to change well. And they hate to change the channel" Older people tend to notice who the anchor is. Younger people could care less. And it is those younger viewers active, affluent, outdoor-orient and free-spending Gen-Yers that advertisers crave.

And chasing younger viewers is a whole new ball game, one most stations haven't figured out how to play yet Nobody has the answer. Whatever mat answer is, it is more complex than simply having news readers roam around the set like free-range chickens. "This is bad news for anyone doing TV but young people don't watch news," Kelman said. "The boomer generation was disproportionately interested in the news because boomers felt that, since they owned the world, they might as well know something about it It's true that, as people age, they start to understand that things they see on the news can impact their lives. When you have kids, you're suddenly more interested in the shape of the world, which is one reason why environmental news is so important now.

The problem facing TV news directors is that so many young people today believe that none of this has anything to do with them. So TV stations tend go after them in a different way. They to create a sense of community, focusing on things like local, high-school sports, while staying away from hard news. The problem is there are limits to how entertaining and palatable you can make a complicated news story." However, by throwing in the towel on its Citytv blueprint and targeting a more traditional, older and easier to reach CTV audience, VTV has thrown the door open Citytv to repeat its Toronto success, now that Citytv is poised to launch its new Victoria station, the New VI, and a remodelled CKVU this falL Stanger said local news directors would well to keep an eye on the Citytv model, and that has little to do with who the anchor is. "What happened with Citytv in Toronto they built a news franchise among 15- to 20-year-olds, who just happen to be today's 35- to 40-year-olds," Stanger said "Over a period of 15 years what has happened is CityPulse's news has grown from young singles to bedroom-commiinity parents with kids, while keeping that news fresh and young.

By doing that they have stolen the news away from the old, grownup CTV station and Global. That, ulti- STEVE GIBBONSREUTERS mately, was what VTV was trying to do over the long haul. They were trying to build a news franchise and have young people grow up with them." Stanger predicted that BCTV, which will be officially rebranded this fall as Global BC, while keeping the BCTV name for its local newscasts, will suffer a slight downward tick in News Hour's share of the local news market, presently hovering around 42.5 per cent, but Martin and Good's departure is not the catastrophe some might believe. "It would have been a more devastating blow if Tony Parsons had gone than Pamela Martin," Stanger said, "because most people think of her as second fiddle." That said, too much importance is attached to an anchor, Stanger suggested, even if that anchor is Parsons. "Gone are the days of the Walter Cronkite father figure.

Peter Mansbridge is the only person I can come up with who, in a tense situation, people are going to go with, because he has so much credibility attached to him, which he's earned over time. It's interesting, really. When Lloyd Robertson moved over to CTV from CBC a number of years ago, some people followed him. But much of the audience stayed where it was. Don't expect tectonic plates to shift just because Pamela Martin and Bill Good made the jump to CTV news.

The audience is what the audience is and a lot of what makes the news what it is has to do with how the news is delivered, not who's delivering it I know that BCTV has consciously decided over the years that their newscast is not going to be driven by a performer or individual It's going to be driven by a tone and manner, so they're never going to be held to ransom by somebody threatening to leave." The pop diva was due to open her world tour in Vancouver at GM Place last Thursday, but Jackson and her managers decided to postpone that show until tonight, blaming the late arrival of stage equipment for the abrupt schedule change. A planned Tuesday stop in Edmonton, Alberta, was cancelled altogether, organizers said. Barenbolm plays Wagner for Israeli audience Jerusalem World-renowned conductor Daniel Barenboim delighted much of his Israeli audience with a piece by Richard Wagner, Adolf Hitler's favourite composer but he also provoked a sharp debate that carried on Sunday after the music stopped. Since its founding in 1948, Israel has observed an informal ban on Wagner's music because of its use in Nazi propaganda before and during the Second World War. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was among those who criticized Baren boim decision to perform Wagner on Saturday night at the Israel Festival, the country's most prestigious arts forum.

"I would rather it hadn't been played," Sharon said Sunday. Arena where Elvis last performed demolished Indianapolis The arena where Elvis Presley staged his last public performance was demolished on Sunday in a series of explosions. "Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building," a member of the demolition team said seconds before the charges ignited at 1 Market Square Arena. Elvis performed here to a near sold-out audience on June 26, 1977; he died less than two months later. FILM Celebrity lawyer Barry Levin found dead los angeles High-profile California criminal lawyer Barry Levin, who helped handle Erik Menendez's murder defence and more recently represented actor Robert Blake, was found dead Saturday at a veterans' cemetery, officials said. News stations reported Levin committed suicide, and that he had cancer and had test results recently that showed the disease was worse than expected.
