XT" CSIS, airport security could have prevented Air India attack, poll finds Death worries exotic pet owners BY NICHOLAS READ VANCOUVER SUN Lake Cowichan tiger owners Cody and Jamie Bell are worried that after what happened to Tania Dumstrey-Soos last week, people who keep tigers and other exotic animals in B.C. will be forced to change their ways. The owner of the tiger that killed Dumstrey-Soos "screwed everybody over with the exotic animals, because now people are going to be freaking out and thinking they shouldn't have them," Cody Bell said of Dumstrey-Soos's fiance, Kim Carlton, on Sunday. "We're try-ing to stay low because of what's going on. But it's not the tiger's fault.

The Bells run Primate Estates, what they describe as an exotic animal "sanctuary" five kilometres outside of Lake Cowichan on Vancouver Island. One of their charges is Susie, a nine-month-old, 140-kilogram Bengal tiger. She lives in an eight-metre-by-eight-metre pen in the backyard. The Bells routinely visit her inside her cage, and Cody says he will pet her through the bars and stick his fingers in her mouth.

However, he adds, they are careful never to be alone with her. "It takes two of us to feed her because she's a big cat, and cats will attack you from behind." "She could eat a cow now." They also have 52 primates of different kinds, various reptiles, and nine other exotic cats, including servals an African species likened to a miniature cheetah and a caracal, a southwest Asian species described as the "desert lynx." "I didn't expect this kind of attention or growth for dot-ca. You've heard the saying that Canadians do tend to punch above our weight from time to time and this maybe one of them." In 1987, the Internet was used mostly for small-time research, and Demco never expected dot-ca would be a force in global commercialization. Nor did he expect to be awarded a CANARIE IWAY award for community service in 2001 and a Canadian New Media Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. And about the same number believe Canada is more vulnerable to a similar terrorist attack than it was in 1985, the Angus Reid Strategies poll indicates.

The company conducted an online survey of 1,046 randomly selected Canadians on May 9 and 10 just after the Air India inquiry was rocked by startling testimony about unheeded warnings and missed opportunities to prevent the terrorist attack. Despite increased public awareness of the case because of the high-profile inquiry headed by Justice John Major, fewer than half of those polled regard the bombing as a Canadian tragedy. Of the 329 people killed when Air India Flight 182 was blown out of the sky, 280 were Canadians, mostly of Indian origin. Yet just 48 per cent of respondents described the attack as a Canadian event, while 30 per cent "said they didn't know. Twenty-two per cent said they saw it as an Indian issue more than a Canadian one.

Among the stunning revelations at the inquiry was testimony by Ontario James Bartleman that he saw intelligence of a specific threat against the Air India flight for the weekend of June 22-23 and tried to pass it on to an RCMP officer, but was brushed off. And a former Quebec police dian Internet Registration Authority, is also considering naming a learning centre after Demco. "Nobody predicted the World Wide Web; it's hard to know if anyone could have predicted the commercialization of it," he said. "Back then it was a novel thing, now it has weaved its way into the fabric of society." The commercialization of the Internet has become an investors' dream, with top-level domain names collecting huge sums in registrations, but most country code domain names are run directly by government or non-profits. "I'm amazed by the size and scope," he said.

Several police officers and former agents of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service had testified there were problems with information-sharing between agencies, as well as delays in following up on tips. But Canadians believe CSIS is more responsible for the failures that led to the bombing, the poll said, with 34 per cent blaming the spy agency and just 27 per cent blaming the RCMP. Transport Canada was seen as blame-worthy by 18 per cent of those surveyed.
