The Leader-Post Regina Monday, July 18, 1994 2 Sports Posse earned its victory over Riders Column Rams dealing with intriguing family affair Its going to be interesting. 9 away from us. Lets get one thing straight The Posse is a much better team than anybody outside the Las Vegas organization had expected. Despite having no previous CFL experience, coach Ron Meyer has already proven that he understands the Canadian game. The players are young and enthusiastic.

There is size and speed on both offence and defence. As a tandem, punter Robbie Keen and kicker Carlos Huerta just might be the best in the league. And theres no way in the world a 21-year-old quarterback this Anthony Calvillo kid should be doing the things he has done this soon in his professional career. He does more than his numbers would indicate, said Jauch. He finds ways to win the game.

He knows when to pass. He knows when to run. He doesnt hurt himself dr his team by making mistakes. He doesnt throw interceptions. You have to give them credit.

Theyve got a good team and theyve done a good job with their personnel. What happens with them down the road, well have to wait and see. Theyve certainly looked good to this point." The Roughriders have looked good themselves. But they haven't looked good consistently, and that has to be a concern to Jauch. There seem to be a couple of alarming trends developing.

In both regular-season games, a 22-21 victory over Calgary and the loss to the Posse, the defence has surrendered touchdowns early three touchdowns in a little more than a quarter against the Stampeders, and two in the first quarter against Las Vegas. To further complicate matters, the offence has scored only two touchdowns in eight quarters of regulation play and two five-minute overtime halves. And you arent going to make the playoffs spotting your opponents an early lead and scoring only the occasional touchdown yourself not in the competitive Western Division, anyway. We had opportunities to win the game, regardless of what the other team did, just by makingthe right decision and making the play, said Jauch. "We had chances to win that game, and thats what our players should focus on.

Were a team that hasnt been together long enough. The heart and the want-to is there. All we need is time. Im confident that it will eventually come around. Nick IVliliokas games here in Regina that were just as bad.

And the game we played in Sacramento last year was even worse. I thought we were as prepared as we could be for the conditions in Las Vegas. I mean, you cant know what its like until youve been through it. It was a long game. We wouldve loved to win it in regulation, and we certainly had an excellent chance to do that We were ahead (19-18) after the third quarter and we had the wind in the fourth, but they took control of the game with their running attack.

They took it By IAN HAMILTON L-P Sports Writer Most days, Jerry Orban concerns himself with the play of the Regina Rams offensive linemen. On the weekend, Orban was keeping a close eye on one of the Rams quarterbacks. Chris Orban, Jerrys son, is trying out for the PFC team after a stellar high school career at Riffel High School. He looked good, Jerry, the Rams offensive line coach, said Sunday after the second day of the teams training camp at Scotty Livingstone Field. Its going to be interesting.

Ive coached football for a lot of years and coached him in a lot of other sports, but Ive never coached him in football. When he was playing, I didnt see that many of his games because our practices conflicted with his games. Im actually looking forward to this. I dont know if he is, though, Well, Chris? Its kind of getting on my nerves, the 18-year-old said with a grin. All my life hes been telling me what to do.

Now I get out here and hes still doing it. Its OK, though. He means well. Chris has been following the Rams for years thanks to his fathers involvement. The younger Orban used to hang around practice and once served as a ballboy for the team.

Then his own football career took off and last season he led the Royals to the Regina Intercollegiate Football Leagues 4A city final. When he decided to play postsecondary football, he narrowed his choices to the Rams and the BCJFAs Okanagan Sun. Needless to say, Regina was his first choice. That forced the teams coaches and executive to discuss in the offseason how to handle the Orban-Orban situation and make It is never a good thing to run out of gas in the desert, and to some extent that explains what happened to the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Sam Boyd Silver Bowl the other night Unaccustomed as they are to the Nevada heat, which is oppressive, even after the sun goes down, the Riders must have been one tired football team come the fourth quarter and particularly through the overtime session. Still, it was the Las Vegas Posse, not the heat that ultimately beat Saskatchewan, 32-22, and the sad fact of the matter is, the Riders were a victim of their own mistakes as much as anything else.

The defence dug itself a hole early by allowing touchdowns on the first two Posse possessions. The offence settled for field goals more often than a good offence should. And there were too many penalties. This one should have been decided in the regulation 60 minutes. Ray Jauch knows that.

And so do his players. I would never use the heat as an excuse I would never do that, the head coach was saying yesterday, in the air-conditioned comfort of his office at Taylor Field. He wouldnt want any, either," said Jerry, who could concentrate on Chriss showing on the weekend because the offensive linemen dont report until tonights 7 oclock workout.

I know he thought of going somewhere else, but I dont want to hinder him. Id leave first before Id make him go somewhere else. If I was only going to be on this team because of him, I wouldnt want to be here, added Chris, whos battling Thom Trojans graduate Rich Krauss for the third-string job behind starter Darryl Leason and second-stringer Chad Ehrnan. I want to be here because I made it here. And if he doesnt make it? Thatd be fine itd be because I didnt show enough, Chris said.

Id rather have it that way. "Itd be difficult for me, but I wouldnt feel that I let him down or didnt have enough pull, added Jerry. Hes got to make it on his own merits. And what the heck? Hes had some really good years and has shown he can play. But while he wont interfere with Chriss chances of making the team, Jerry can still have some influence on his sons showing in camp.

This gives me added incentive to tell my guys, Hey, take care of the quarterback, Orban said with a chuckle. "And theyd better listen. the A-B final at Rambler Park. Thats a stupid question, Elgaard said after playing the entire game in temperature that started at 41 and dropped to 35 C.

Im tired as crap. I tried to get off the play before. This heat definitely helped them more than it helped us. Elgaard had indeed kneeled down earlier, gasping for air as many of the Roughriders had done frequently during the game. Still, when Elgaard went down, Roughriders head coach Ray Jauch was on the field to offer assistance.

He had just tied the record," Jauch said after the Roughriders lost 32-22. We had a timeout. I kind of wanted to be out there.
