-'DECEMBER 6, 1992 H.CH SCHOOL FOOTBALL THE SUNDAY RECORD S-T7 ergem Catholic looking forward to Moa By GREGORY SCKUTTA Record Staff Writer ORADELL Last year, Bergen Catholic's locker room was dominated by a ladder to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Parochial A "'North football championship. This year it must be a pool table. i "There's no celebration to-" night," Bergen Catholic coach Fred Stengel said after the Cru-yjBaders crushed Immaculata, 42-0, in the North semifinal for their 51st consecutive victory. "The job isn't done. There's still one ball on the table and I want to run the 'table." That ball is Paramus Catholic and its All-State candidate, quarterback Vito Campanile, who just as easily disposed of Seton Hall Prep Saturday to earn a trip to Bergen Catholic next week for the sectional title.

It's a game that Stengel and the defending sectional champion Crusaders have been looking forward to since September. "Let the war begin," a smiling Stengel said as he walked off the field. That smile was not evident for much of the game Saturday, as the memory of last year's semifinal contest against Immaculata was fresh in his mind. In that game, the Crusaders jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead before Immaculata called the pattern. He is in my mind a Division I quarterback." "The coach calls the plays, but I have the option to change the pattern based on what I see," DeRosa said.

"We had the choice of Mark Fabish doing a dip across or McDermott coming across. I figured they'd be keying on Mark so I went with Tim." Fabish got his chance later in the half when he took a deflected pass off the hands of Immaculata's Scott Preisler while falling into the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown to make the score 28-0. Fullback Joe DeFranco rushed for 57 yards and three times blasted the ball into the end zone from the 1-yard line. Bill Tierney also off and marched 73 yards in six plays to take a 7-0 lead with barely 2:30 run off the clock. Senior quarterback Mark DeRosa, who completed 9 of 14 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns, hit Tim McDermott on a short crossing pattern over the middle and the senior wideout ran it in untouched for the 36-yard touchdown.

"We came out in the no-huddle to cut the amount of information they could get to their players on the field and spread out the defense a bit," Stengel said. "Once we saw what they were going to do, we'd call the play from the sideline. On the first touchdown, I called the play, but DeRosa had a fantastic day, breaking tackles right and left on the way to 67 yards and a touchdown. "We were really anxious to just put our helmets on and play this game," said Fabish, who also had an interception as a defensive back. "Last year they came in here and played us tough and we were worried they might do that again.

We didn't want to give them a chance to come back." There was little chance of that as the Crusader defense, led- by linebacker Ben Tonon and linemen Bob Colontrelle and Ryan Carfley held the Spartans to -33 yards of offense in the first half and 19 net yards for the entire game. PAROCHIAL A scored 19 second-half points and came within a foot of recovering a BC fumble in the end zone for the winning score. The Spartans, predominantly a running team during the regular season, threw for 292 yards in that game. "This is a team that nearly came back from 21-0 to beat us last year," Stengel said. "Our goal this time was to get them back on their heels early.

We wanted to get as many points as we could in the first half and sit on it." The tone was set early as the Crusaders took the opening kick- rParaiiiiis Cath. rolls Union gets it done against Randolph J. A to set 11 ---f- 1, Ir i. v. THE PAROCHIAL A started it with an 8-yard run and Lopez finished it with a 14-yard jaunt around left end.

The Pirates (6-4) couldn't do anything and the Paladins came right back with a 71-yard drive, capped by Lopez's 19-yard TD run. The senior running back had started the drive with a 23-yard run. "Even then we might have gotten back into the game," said Allen, "but we didn't score when we got down deep." The Pirates marched to the PC 15, only to have Nunzio Campanile pick off a Rhett Zidziunas pass. The visitors never threatened again until they trailed, 44-0. "We saw they didn't have too much size, so felt we could run on them," said Lopez, who picked up 154 yards on nine first-half carries.

"And give our front line credit for a great job of making it easy for me." Coach Mike Campanile was also quick to credit his offensive line. Sheridan scored twice in the first quarter as the Farmers (11-0), winners of 22 in a row, jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Jessie Williams, Phil Conley, and Mike White rushed for touchdowns as Dover completed an unbeaten season with a 22-0 victory over Summit (8-3) to win the Group 2 title. Williams rushed for 163 yards in 21 carries and scored on a 23-yard run early in the fourth quarter to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead.

Conley got his team on the board first with a 26-yard run late in the first quarter. Central Jersey Tasheen Rivera ran around right end for a successful two-point conversion to give Matawan a 29-28 overtime win over Neptune in the Central Group 3 final in Aberdeen Township. The win gave Matawan (10-1) its second consecutive title. Senior fullback Odell Reevey carried 25 times for 111 yards including a 10-yard burst for the game's only touchdown leading Keyport to a 6-2 victory over Dun-ellen for the Group 1 championship. Carteret used a ball-control offense to consume more than eight minutes of the first quarter on a 14-play, 67-yard drive which ended on a 1-yard run by Rob Wilder as it defeated Princeton, 14-0, for All-County teams MADISON Eight members of the All-Bergen field hockey team and seven from the All-Pas-saic team will participate in the annual Senior Showcase today at Drew University.

The North Jersey Field Hockey Association is sponsoring three games, used primarily to allow college coaches to watch New Jersey's best senior field hockey players. Ninety-six players are scheduled to compete. The eight All-Bergen first-team players will see action in the noon contest. Forward Christine Montenegro of River Dell, and Maryland-bound link Karin Freeswick of Ramsey are on the Blue team. Forward Jenn Accordino of Northern Valley at Demarest, links Stephanie Pelz of Ramsey and Melissa Jaten of Northern Highlands, fullback Sarah Johnson of Demarest and goalie Maria Sirangelo of River Dell are on the Yellow team.

For the 10 a.m., game, the Blue team features forward Jennifer Russo of Wayne Hills, halfback Jenn Badami of Wayne Valley, and goalie Danielle Bazzini of game said, "but they never seem to get the credit they deserve. And we're averaging over 400 yards a game. So they must be doing something right." Center Billy Benson, guards Mark Szymczak and Monty Mason, and tackles Felix Mausic and Kevin White paved the way for the Paladins to roll up 516 yards. The line also gave its quarterback plenty of time to throw. And despite the cross winds, Campanile showed his arm strength by completing 12 of 19 passes to six different receivers.

Martin Russo ended the PC shutout bid early in the fourth quarter when he went 19 yards around left end for a touchdown. On the next series Doug Williams tackled Nunzio Campanile for a safety, and after the free kick the Pirates struck again, with Russo grabbing a 17-yard TD pass from Zidziunas. Then the firewaorks started. Seton Hall kicked off to Brian Tra-bulski on the 7. He broke up the middle, made two cuts, and went 93 yards to paydirt.
